GRATEFUL FOR THE JOURNEY
Dear Royal Oak Schools Families,

Royal Oak Schools is full of passionate, hardworking people who care deeply about students, and it’s been an honor to be part of that mission.
I’m looking forward to what’s next, but I’ll definitely miss the meaningful connections. Thank you for making this such a rewarding and memorable journey. I wish you all the very best.

BUILDING BRIGHTER FUTURES
Royal Oak Schools is proud to support Oakland80, a county-wide initiative working to ensure that 80% of Oakland County residents earn a college degree or skills certificate by 2030. This goal supports economic growth and opens doors for every student—no matter their background.
Why It Matters:
Today’s careers increasingly require education beyond high school. Oakland80 brings schools, businesses, and community groups together to make post-secondary success more accessible, especially for students facing barriers.
Key Focus Areas:
- Career Exploration – Helping students learn about job paths and required training.
- Smooth Transitions – Guiding students from high school to college, apprenticeships, or skilled trades.
- Financial Aid Support – Assisting families in understanding and accessing funding options.
- Equity – Closing opportunity gaps so all students can thrive.
- Talent Retention – Encouraging students to live, work, and grow in Oakland County.
What This Looks Like in Royal Oak Schools:
- Aligning curriculum with in-demand skills.
- Expanding post-secondary counseling and financial aid awareness.
- Building partnerships with local colleges and businesses for dual enrollment, internships, and career pathways.
- Training teachers to incorporate real-world readiness into lessons.
- Tracking post-secondary data to improve student support.
Thanks to Oakland80, Royal Oak High School now benefits from a dedicated team member, Katrina Hamilton, helping students plan for life after graduation. Together, we’re preparing every student for success in a dynamic world.

With professionalism, compassion, and a deep commitment to excellence, Paula has been a steady and supportive presence at the heart of district operations.
Superintendent Mary Beth Fitzpatrick praised Paula’s essential role in keeping the central office and Board of Education running smoothly.
“I want to thank Paula for her care for and dedication to our district,” Fitzpatrick shared. “She offers quiet assurance to the operations of our office, the central office, and our Board of Education members. In response to receiving the award, Paula expressed heartfelt gratitude:
“I am incredibly honored and humbled to be named Royal Oak Schools Support Person of the Year. Working alongside such dedicated educators, staff, and leaders is a privilege I never take for granted.”
Congratulations, Paula, and thank you for your outstanding service!
CELEBRATING EXCELLENCE
Kathy Abela Business Administrator of the Year
Royal Oak Schools is proud to announce that Kathy Abela, Executive Director of Finance and Operations, has been named the 2024–2025 Oakland County School Business Administrator of the Year by the Oakland County School Business Officials (OCSBO). The award was presented on Friday, May 9, 2025, during the organization’s meeting at Oakland Schools Main Campus in Waterford.
Since 1998, the OCSBO has annually honored one outstanding school business leader for their exceptional service, commitment to best practices, and dedication to excellence in education.
“Kathy brings more than two decades of school district accounting experience and an unwavering commitment to excellence,” said OCSBO President Matthew McDaniel. “As the district’s lead Business Official, she manages every aspect of district finances and leads critical operational departments, including custodial, maintenance, transportation, and food services. Her oversight of bond dollars, sinking funds, grant allocations, and the annual audit process reflects her deep expertise and dedication to responsible stewardship of public resources.”
Angela Almas Named Support Person of the Year
Royal Oak Schools is proud to announce that Angela Almas has been named the 2025 Support Person of the Year by the Oakland County Community and Adult Educators (OCCAE). Pronounced “O-K,” OCCAE recognizes exceptional staff members who serve adult and community education programs across the county.
Angela’s nomination came from three members of the Royal Oak Continuing Education team at Churchill Community Education Center, who praised her dedication, initiative, and strong problem-solving skills. In addition to her vital role supporting adult education, Angela works full-time at Royal Oak Middle School, where she continues to make a difference each day for both staff and students.
Her colleagues shared glowing remarks in their nomination, including:
“Angela goes above and beyond to help the staff and students. She is an expert problem solver. She will come up with outside-the-box solutions when both staff and students need them. If she doesn't have an immediate answer for a question, she will get it. It is always nice to know there is someone you can count on in the office.”
Angela now joins the ranks of past Royal Oak OCCAE award winners Mike Trice and Joy Zug, further demonstrating the district’s continued excellence in supporting adult learners.
Congratulations, Angela, on this well-deserved honor!
RAVEN GRADUATION
On May 29, 2025, Royal Oak High School celebrated the graduation of the Class of 2025 at Ravens Stadium. The commencement ceremony, which began at 7:00 p.m., honored the achievements of our seniors as they concluded their high school journey. The event was live-streamed, allowing families and community members to participate in this significant milestone remotely.
AROUND THE DISTRICT
Ravens Honored At ACE/OTEC Celebration
On May 28, several Royal Oak High School students were recognized at the 2025 Oakland ACE (Accelerated College Experience) and Oakland Technical Early College (OTEC) Graduation Celebration, hosted by Oakland Schools. The event celebrated students from across the county who have taken on the challenge of earning college credit—and in many cases, associate degrees—while still in high school. These rigorous programs help students accelerate their educational journeys and prepare for success in college and their careers.
We are proud to share that the following ROHS Ravens were honored for their accomplishments:
Josephine Devine, Emma Fields, Carter Harris, Oliver Harris, Tair Karanfili, Jonathan McNett, Jacob Mihelic, and Mia Yerke.
These students have shown extraordinary commitment and resilience in balancing college coursework with their high school responsibilities. Their achievements reflect our district’s mission to support students as they grow into adaptable, lifelong learners, ready to thrive in a dynamic world. Congratulations to our ACE and OTEC graduates.
Senior Awarded Full-Ride Scholarship
Royal Oak High School senior Devon Wills received life-changing news on May 28 when he was awarded the prestigious Robert A. Schuele Scholarship—a full-ride, four-year scholarship. This scholarship is granted to a high school senior in Wayne, Oakland, and/or Macomb County, or a member in good standing with Metro Detroit Youth Clubs (MDYC). There are other criteria as well, such as grade point, or A.C.T./SAT scores, a need for financial assistance, and being able to commit to a full-time college program with a plan to graduate in four years.
- Devon’s journey with MDYC began as a young “club kid” and grew into a leadership role as a volunteer and mentor. His dedication to service and personal growth earned him this top honor out of nine finalists across the region.
- The surprise ceremony took place at ROHS, with Principal Don Loomis, Superintendent Mary Beth Fitzpatrick, and members of the scholarship committee in attendance.
- Devon will attend Michigan State University in the fall to pursue a career in physical therapy. “This scholarship means everything,” he said. “Now I can focus entirely on my studies.”
ROMS Student Advances to National-Level Contest
Royal Oak Middle School student Abigail Woodruff is making waves in public speaking, recently winning the Michigan District Oratorical Contest and earning a $2,500 scholarship. She now moves on to the Optimist International Regional Contest in St. Louis this July, representing Michigan against five other regional champions.
Abigail’s journey began with victories at the local Club and Area contests, and she now has a shot at advancing to the World Finals, where top competitors will vie for scholarships up to $15,000.
Her success is a reflection of her talent, hard work, and the supportive learning environment of Royal Oak Schools. We’re incredibly proud and wish her the best as she takes the next step in this exciting journey!
Student Celebrated for Arctic Grayling Project
A Keller Elementary alum is continuing to make a splash in the world of environmental science. Declan O’Reilly, who launched a fundraising initiative for the reintroduction of Arctic grayling fish in Michigan streams while a student at Keller, was recently honored by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for his early efforts.
This week marked a major milestone for the project, as Arctic grayling eggs were officially planted in select Michigan streams—a critical step in restoring the native species to its historical habitat. Declan was invited to attend a special luncheon hosted by the DNR to celebrate the occasion.
At the event, Declan was warmly welcomed and recognized as a passionate early supporter of the initiative. DNR representatives referred to him as a bit of a “celebrity” for his dedication and vision as a young student. Declan’s story is a shining example of how student-led efforts, driven by curiosity and care for the environment, can make a lasting impact. His continued involvement speaks to the heart of Royal Oak Schools’ mission: empowering students to grow into thoughtful, engaged citizens who help shape a better future.
Northwood Students Experience Girl Scouts' Mobile STEAM Lab
Northwood Elementary was buzzing with excitement as students in grades 1–4 got a firsthand look at the future of STEAM education. The Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan (GSSEM) rolled into town with their brand-new *Mobile STEAM Lab*, and four lucky classrooms had the opportunity to participate in an exclusive early access pilot of the program.
From building simple robots to testing basic coding sequences, students were fully engaged in exploring, experimenting, and problem-solving. There were smiles, high-fives, and lots of curious questions as students navigated each learning station with enthusiasm and confidence. Teachers and staff were just as thrilled—many noted how powerful it was to see students make connections between classroom concepts and real-world technology in such an interactive setting.
The Mobile STEAM Lab is part of GSSEM’s mission to ignite long-term interest in STEM fields, especially among young learners. With a focus on accessibility and innovation, the lab is equipped to travel to schools across the region, making high-quality STEM education available to more students than ever before.
Second Grade Explores Downtown Royal Oak
Second-grade students from Addams Elementary recently took their learning beyond the classroom with an exciting and educational field trip to downtown Royal Oak. As part of their community studies, students visited the Royal Oak Police Department, Fire Department, and City Hall to gain a deeper understanding of how local government and public safety services support our city.
Led by teacher Andrea Berger, the trip gave students the opportunity to meet the people behind the uniforms and offices, asking questions, touring facilities, and learning about the important responsibilities of police officers, firefighters, and city officials. The field trip sparked curiosity, strengthened civic awareness, and helped students connect their classroom lessons to the real world around them.
ROMS SUMMER ACTIVITIES
Royal Oak Schools is proud to highlight the success of the very first "Safe Summer Activities Fair" hosted by Royal Oak Middle School! This event was designed to connect students with safe, engaging, and enriching summer opportunities. From sports leagues and summer camps to educational programs and recreational activities, the fair provided a diverse range of options for students to stay active, explore new interests, and continue learning beyond the classroom. Students had the chance to meet with local organizations, learn about their offerings, and even receive special coupons to enjoy at several participating venues. The event was a fun and informative way to kick off summer planning and support our students’ well-being.
Royal Oak Middle School extends a heartfelt thank-you to all of the community partners who participated and made this event possible:
- Affirmations
- Bowlero
- High Score

STUDENTS SHINE AT REVERSE JOB FAIR
Royal Oak Schools is proud to share the success of a recent opportunity for students in our Adult Transition Program at TRAILS, a Reverse Job Fair where students took center stage! Unlike traditional job fairs, this unique event flipped the script: employers came to meet the students, who had thoughtfully prepared displays to highlight their skills, interests, and strengths.
Our students impressed attendees by presenting themselves with confidence and professionalism, demonstrating just how ready they are to enter the workforce. It was an incredible opportunity for meaningful connections with employers and community partners, and we are thrilled with the positive feedback received.
Events like this reinforce our mission of preparing students for successful transitions into adult life, and we couldn’t be prouder of the effort and enthusiasm our students brought to the experience. Thank you to our students and TRAILS Supervisor, Susannah Oliver, for making this such a memorable event.
SHAPE SAFER ROUTES FOR ROYAL OAK SCHOOLS
Royal Oak Schools is partnering with the City of Royal Oak on an important initiative to make it safer and easier for students to walk, bike, or roll to school. Together, we are preparing to apply for a Safe Routes to School Major Grant through the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) in 2026. If awarded, this grant could fund significant improvements to sidewalks, crosswalks, and other infrastructure—benefiting both schools and neighborhoods.
To move this effort forward, we need input from our students and families. Each child in grades 3–12 should complete the survey—even if multiple children attend the same school. Be sure to use the building-specific survey links provided below:
