Manuel Alvarez Bravo used to take pictures of a Mexico City that had just lived its course. For me, Mexico City is basically the place where I feel the happiest, a city that watched me grow, and the one where I hold the best memories of my life. Taking this picture again during a recent trip to Mexico, at the exact angle of a previous picture I had displayed, was truly interesting to capture. The image has darker tones, and the image of "La Virgencita" is easier to spot.
One of the topics that most stood out for me was "Depth of field" and how an image can change its perspective with this. Personally, this picture reminds me of a Spanish phrase that I have repeatedly been repeating in my head over and over. "Lo que toca el alma, no se olvida," which translates to: "You never forget what touches your soul". When I took this picture, I had one of the best moments of this year, in general, and it's something I wont ever forget. The image was altered for a different result.
I was able to capture the beauty of the Golden Gate a few weeks ago when we had to capture a problem in our community and propose ways of eradicating said issue. I am very proud of the outcome of this picture since I was able to apply all of my knowledge to date, having as a result a very interesting picture of one of the most iconic bridges in the world.
I rarely take inspiration from TV shows or even movies, but I usually tend to take inspiration from movies that leave a message at the end of the show or movie. This image was taken with the inspiration of a Korean show that had vibes similar to the picture attached. The image was changed in order to not duplicate the original version.
This picture is specifically from a recent project; I took this picture while being with my friend at her house. Planes kept on passing by, and I was able to capture this image. The alteration allowed the image to portray more color in the image, specifically in the sky and clouds.
I took this picture on my latest trip to Mexico, on the same day I re-took the picture of "La Virgencita". The picture captures the older churches that used to be the principal ones previous to the "Basilica" being built. The contrast of colors is slightly noticeable yet very nice to look at. In regards to a concern in this case, would be how tilted this specific church is getting.
I took this picture by putting a timer on my phone previous to posing for said picture. The image captures the shadows of my sister and me while the important or attention-capturing part is the Jellyfish and the artificial light applied to the water tank to achieve these colors.
Similar to the picture captured of the Golden Gate, I am also very proud of this image, the image has the intention to capture the lack of trash cans to prevent garbage accumulation. Although, this image allows me to notice how much I have improved in relation to the way I take my pictures and how I have used the materials I have on hand, to take better pictures.
I have used this image in previous projects. I enjoy looking at this picture for the memories it brings me. An image that captures the ocean view in a very beautiful way.
Finally, I would like to end my portfolio with this image. I took it with my friend who was holding a plushie similar to mine. Although it may not have a lot of technicality, I still believe this is the most memorable image I have captured during this quarter.
Reflection
This semester in the photography class has been a really interesting experience and full of new experiences and knowledge. I learned much more than I expected, not only about technique and camera handling, but also about how to observe the world from a more artistic and detailed perspective. I discovered the importance of light, angles and colors, and how each can tell a story or convey an emotion. I realized that photography is not just about capturing an image, but capturing a moment, an idea or a feeling that can resonate with others. The aforementioned was one of the factors that interested me and made me realize how much I liked photography.
What pleased me most was the creative freedom we had to explore different styles and subject matter. This approach allowed me to experiment with new ideas and express my thoughts and feelings through images, where every photograph we took was an opportunity to learn something new and push our own limits. The constructive criticism we received from both the teacher and my classmates was invaluable, as it helped me to see where I could improve and to appreciate the strengths of my work. I would especially like to thank our teacher for her patience, dedication and enthusiasm. Her interest in photography motivated us to do our best in each project. Every explanation, no matter how simple it may seem, helped us to understand complex concepts in a clear and practical way.
I also thank my classmates. Learning alongside you was an incredible experience, as everyone brought unique ideas and different perspectives. Seeing your work inspired me greatly and taught me that everyone has a special way of seeing the world through the lens. I am very grateful for this experience and excited to continue practicing and improving my photography skills.
