Project Description:

The Green County Family YMCA expansion and renovation transforms an aging facility into a high-performing, modern wellness destination in the small town of Monroe. Developed through a strategic master plan, the project responds to clear community needs while significantly increasing the YMCA’s capacity to serve a growing and now highly engaged membership base.  Rather than completely replacing the existing building, the design team rearranged and expanded existing programming. The team focused on improving circulation, strengthening identity and introducing new program areas that support daily use across all age groups. At the core of the project is a dedicated childcare and youth development addition. The center now serves more than 60 children each day, with the program’s enrollment reaching capacity within a single day of opening. This immediate demand showcases the critical role the facility plays in supporting local working families. The expansion also redefines the YMCA’s wellness offerings. The facility grew from having no group fitness studios to now offering four, enabling a dramatic increase in programming and introducing new faces to the Y. Since opening, YMCA attendance has risen by 50%, while membership has grown by 30%, reaching more than 1,650 new members, an incredible achievement in a city of just over 10,000 residents. These gains reflect not only the simple expansion of space, but a comprehensive shift in how the community uses the building. Set within a small rural context, the project delivers a level of quality and performance typically found in much larger markets. It positions the YMCA as both a regional destination and a daily resource — one that continues to evolve alongside the community it serves.
