Welcome to the April 2024 newsletter from Lydon Contracting Ltd. We're proud of the work we do and want to share our latest news, useful information and staff updates.
Next stop please!
During April we completed the installation of a new bus stop in Nottinghamshire as part of a 278 works agreement. We worked closely with the council and local community to ensure all aspects of the projects were streamlined and delivered within the programme window.
The finished product looks great with great feedback already received from the council and local residents.
Strong foundations
Works at Yardley Wood Bus Depot has commenced with construction of the concrete base for the new RMU base and metering plinth. The work included the temporary diversion of the storm drain while the plinth was formed and cast, and the earth nest completed.
The switchgear and GRP housing were successfully landed in situ ready for the cable installation to commence. Once the cables are installed the storm drain will be lowered, ACO channels connected, concrete gradients reformed, and Armco barriers installed for protection.
Precision pouring
Our project at Bicester has continued to progress well during April. The ground has finally started to dry out, allowing the process of backfilling and commencement of construction of the infrastructure.
Last month we were getting ready for the final concrete pour to complete the 11kV Switch Room base. This has now been successfully constructed as well as the 33kV Switch Room base which will be adopted by the local DNO, SSE.
Works can now continue with the construction of the access roads to the various switch rooms, importing and compacting base material as well as installing the kerb lines around site.
Roadside working
During April we started a package of works on the A452 Kenilworth Road that saw us diverting an existing NGED 11kV cable from the central reservation into the southern grass verge along the busy dual carriageway to allow for a new major road reconstruction.
The works have been carried out under a lane closure, and then a major road closure to enable the road crossing (all completed within a weekend). The works have progressed well and are on track to come in ahead of programme.
The final stage will be to install the new HV cable, scheduled for 3rd May.
Charging ahead
This month we have been in North London installing EV charging infrastructure for a fleet of delivery vehicles.
Despite the relentless rain, all the below ground ducts have been installed and the HV substation base cast ready for landing of equipment.
During April we took delivery of 3no. brand new Ford Ranger Wildtraks as part of our continued investment of keeping our road vehicle fleet up to date. Fitted with the Lydon Contracting livery, they have now taken to the roads looking great.

I am a family man, with a wife, two children, and a four-year-old grandson who tells me it's hard work playing computer games!
My professional journey has been rooted in civil engineering. I began my career in tunnelling, excavating 12-foot tunnels. My experiences include constructing large underground gas storage caverns (190 meters below ground), contributing to the Docklands Light Railway extension into Bank Station, and working on the transformation of the contaminated Greenwich Peninsula site for the Millennium Dome.
Outside of work, I am passionate about photography. A highlight of my pursuits was serving as the photographer for renowned Bhangra singer Malkit Singh during his 2002 tour in Spain. Nowadays, I cherish spending most of my spare time with friends and family.
