As computing is an increasing part of life today, it is essential that all pupils gain the confidence and ability that they need in this subject to prepare them for the challenge of a rapidly developing and changing technological world. The use of ICT will enhance and extend children’s learning across the whole curriculum whilst developing motivation and social skills.

Our computing vision at St Botolph’s Academy, is that the use of these technologies will enrich the experience of all pupils and that these resources will help to provide an environment without boundaries, where opportunities can be explored in safety and with confidence. Our aim is to enable all our pupils and staff to be confident, competent, and independent users of ICT.

We have the responsibility to prepare the pupils for their future by improving their knowledge and understanding of how imperative technology is as an aid in learning and the real world beyond school.

Essential knowledge for Computing

The connected nature of devices (networking, coding, systems)

Competency in coding for different purposes

How to be safe and respectful online.

Know how assess knowledge that is being used online and the differences between fact and fiction.

Essential Skills for computing

Connect and communicate with others safely and with respect.

Communicate with others using applications and devices

Collect, organise and manipulate data and information effectively

Use and create instructions and algorithms for a specific purpose.

Become proficient in using standard word, spreadsheet, database and presentation software.

Computing Implementation

Computing skills are taught both discretely and cross-curricularly, supporting other areas of learning across the school. We follow the national curriculum for Computing in Key Stage 1 and 2 and lessons are planned for on a 2-year cycle using the Kapow scheme of work, which promotes a progression of skills and knowledge and ensures a high degree of challenge for learners. This scheme delivers blocks of learning that build on what has been taught in previous years and ensure a wide range of coverage of the key strands within the ICT curriculum. Our planned curriculum for digital literacy is based on the document ‘Education for a Connected World’ and clearly shows progression of skills from Nursery to Year 6, we have also made direct links to our PSHE curriculum. This ensures that children are exposed to a range of topics including understanding current issues such as ‘fake news’ and ‘body image’. Even our youngest children in Early Years children will be exposed to the understanding of internet safety as they explore the world around them and how technology is an everyday part of their learning and understanding of the world. Our school website also carries advice and support to help parents keeps their children safe outside of school.
