An Iconic Colorado Landmark Under a Spectacular Night Sky
On July 3rd, while everyone was captivated by Independence Day fireworks, I ventured to the Red Cliff Bridge in Colorado to capture a unique shot of this iconic structure under the Milky Way. This cantilevered steel arch bridge, approximately 200 feet (61 meters) high and 471 feet (144 meters) long, plays a crucial role in transporting a significant portion of the local labor force across various economic sectors in Eagle County, Colorado.
Designed by architect King Burghardt and constructed by F.M. Kenney with steel fabricated by the Minnesota-Moline Power Implement Company, the bridge was completed in 1941. It stands as a testament to early 20th-century engineering and is recognized for its historical significance, having been listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. (*1)
The bridge not only facilitates daily commutes but also connects the communities of Eagle County and Lake County, symbolizing both the area's historical heritage and its ongoing vitality.
The serene night and the extraordinary backdrop of the Milky Way, visible to the naked eye, provided the perfect setting for capturing the bridge in all its glory. This photograph, taken with a single shot, encapsulates the blend of human ingenuity and the wonders of the universe that make the Red Cliff Bridge a treasured landmark.
