Dear University Community
- I hope everyone is enjoying our restored access to the University with TxDOT’s work on University Boulevard providing us with eased access and egress. We greatly appreciate the patience and understanding demonstrated by all members of the University community and thank the hard-working team at TxDot and their contractors that worked on this.
- I’d like to encourage your attendance at two remarkable upcoming lectures that you’ll want to add to your calendar, and share with family and friends:
- Monday, Oct. 6 – A special opportunity to hear from former City Manager of San Antonio Sheryl Sculley who will share her thoughts on urban growth, civic leadership and fiscal responsibility with her presentation "From Challenges to Change: Redefining Growth for Our City." This is part of a new free TAMIU Community Engagement Lecture Series open to the public. In addition to her broad experience in public administration, Sculley is the author of "Greedy Bastards: One City’s Texas-Size Struggle to Avoid a Financial Crisis," a book on her city management experience in San Antonio. Here’s more.
- Wednesday, Oct. 8 -- A world-renowned authority on particle physics, Dr. Timothy R. Andeen, associate professor of particle physics at the University of Texas at Austin, presents his free lecture “The Search for Dark Matter: Collision Course – Particle Physics on the Energy Frontier.” Dr. Andeen will explore the new surprises that Texas researchers are uncovering looking at the smallest building blocks of the universe. This event is open to the public.
- Looking for the Bookstore? You’ll find it now located in temporary facilities inside the Western Hemispheric Trade Center (WHTC) 125. You’ll find the same friendly service and resources available to you while renovations in the Senator Judith Zaffirini Student Success Center are underway.
- How about making a run for a “ghoulish” good time? TAMIU’s Rec Center is hosting its 5th Annual Zombie Run on Saturday, Oct. 11 and registration is underway. It’s happening at the Jovita Idar El Progreso Park (Bartlett Soccer Complex) from 8 a.m. – 12 noon.
- Students are loving College Night every Tuesday at the City of Laredo Tennis Complex at TAMIU from 7 – 8:45 p.m. for enrolled students, free of charge. Get your racket and get in the swing of things. You can practice and socialize at the same time!
This will be my final Trailblazer quote, and it comes from T.S. Eliot:
“What we call the beginning is often the end. And to make an end is to make a beginning. The end is where we start from.”
This end is not a conclusion…we’re just getting started. The closing of this chapter is but a prelude to the successes that lie ahead, and I share in the excitement of welcoming our new president, Dr. Chris Maynard, who will take the reins this Wednesday to help us write the next chapter in our University’s story.
Wishing you all the very best,
- Juan J. Castillo | Interim President and CFO
