Project Description:
Hosting its inaugural game in January 2023, the University of Connecticut’s new 97,300-square-foot Toscano Family Ice Forum takes its place within the university’s dynamic Athletics District. Toscano provides Division I-level coaching and player training facilities for the men’s and women’s teams and an intimate arena with seating for 2,680 fans.
Traveling from the main campus along Jim Calhoun Way and viewed from an elevated perspective, the building makes a compelling statement. While material from the district’s surrounding structures were employed — glass, brick and metal panel threaded with accents of UConn blue — these elements were interpreted to express the kinetic nature of the sport of ice hockey. The building’s north-facing glass facade is set off by an angled configuration of metal panel inspired by the powerful gesture of skate blades, evoking the precision required to thrive, as well as the drive and discipline it takes to win on the ice.
On game night, visitors flock to an illuminated building that features a generous plaza and firepit that invites fans to linger and socialize. Entering and moving through Toscano is an immersive and hockey-forward experience. Transparency in the lobby creates immediate views to the arena and ice; environmental graphics, dynamic lighting effects and material selection were inspired by aspects of the sport; ice and club level lounges make every game a social event; and seating for students means that everyone can get in on the action.
