Gernika to Bilbao SPAIN

11 June 2025

We knew it was going to be a whopper of a day, so we pushed off early just behind our Amigo’s who had gotten away earlier than us. The sun was already shining and was north of 20 degrees and humid. I was already considering our exit plans, a bus at the 18km mark or train at 22kms.

As we pushed on the clouds came and provided some welcoming relief from the sun’s intensity and from time to time we even got a coolish breeze to bring on some encouragement.

We caught up with our Amigos at lunch time after we had just passed the halfway point and then knocked off another 7km at a cracking pace along a flat and long boring piece of road before we turned off to face the last long climb and then decent into Bilbao.

Whilst the temperature was still in the high 20’s, the cloud cover was our saving grace. We literally hobbled into our hotel room around 5:15pm and were soaking our tired and aching bodies in our luxurious bath soon after!

The feet feel like they’ve been pulverised but we made it and we have a rest day to recover. Thank goodness for that!

The road walking at it’s worst
A welcoming reward towards the top of the last climb before the decent into Bilbao
A well justified luxurious reward
