Dates & Times
As advertised on our website:
Dosbarth Coch (Nursery / Reception): Thursday 12th June, morning (start around 9:30am)
Years 1 & 2: Friday 13th June, morning (start around 9:35am)
Years 3, 4, 5 & 6 Friday 13th June, afternoon (parents permitted on site from approx 1:20)
What do children need?
Please ensure your child has a hat and a water bottle for Sports Day. If the weather is forecast to be sunny, please apply long lasting suncream before school.
Children should wear school uniform - their red polo shirts and a pair of black shorts (and trainers). No jewellery (including earrings).
Weather
Unfotunately we are reliant on the weather.
It is sometimes not possible to make a call as to whether we can go ahead until the morning of Sports Day. We are mindful that many will have taken time off work and will try to go ahead if we can. We will not go ahead if there is concern that the field will be too slippery. We have, however, been known to go ahead to avoid cancelling if there is rain forecast for later (and we have sometimes had to drop one or two races if the rain comes in earlier than we expected).
If Sports Day needs to be postponed, we have reserved the same days the week after.
If the weather is against us on the reserve dates it will be more complicated to find a third date but we will try (other things in the diary will need to be cancelled or rearranged if that is the case). We will do this and communicate with parents as quickly as possible.
Attending Sports Days
Please help us by reading this information carefully and sharing it with other family members who may be attending. Our organisation has been reviewed by an LA Health & Safety Officer.
Parking
Parents are asked not to park on the lane on Sports Days leaving the lane free for blue badge holders who are attending sports day to park (we have insufficient space in the school carpark). Anyone parking in the lane should ensure that they do not block the gates to the carpark or to the playground so that they are accessible in case of emergency.
Adults who require wheel chair access are welcome to watch Sports Day from the junior playground rather than the field if they prefer (and any accompanying adults can join them). In the morning, Mr Evans will be there to direct you to a safe place for you to wait whilst the taxis for the satellite class are arriving. Please do not take up position to watch the Sports Day, until all the taxis have left. In the afternoon, we will open the pedestrian gate at approximately 13:20.
Arrival
Thursday & Friday mornings: All parents attending the morning Sports Days are welcome to stay on site after dropping off their children. The waiting area will be the space between the two buildings at the front of the school.
Please do not wait in the junior playground, back yard, the area between Dosbarth Melyn and the infant yard or on the field - any one lingering will be asked to move as it is important that we maintain a normal walk to class for the children in Dosbarth Enfys (our Trinity Fields Satellite Class). Dosbarth Enfys is based in the demountable building at the top of the sports field. Taxis drop children off in the junior playground between 9:15 & 9:25. The children in this class may be unsettled by crowds of parents: it is really important that the children are able to walk to class before parents attending sports day are in the area of the field.
As soon as the Satellite Class children are in class, we will invite parents onto the field.
The gates to the school will be locked for the security of the children at approximately 9:30.
Friday afternoon: Parents attending the afternoon Sports Day (Y3-6) should not come on to site until the children have all returned to their classrooms after the lunchbreak. The gates will then be opened, at approximately 13:20, for 15 minutes, to allow everyone in. After this they will be locked.
Watching Sports Day
Spectators will sit on the far side of the field and children will sit on the building side, under the gazebos. This is to provide easy and safe access to the toilets for the children.
Please note that during Sports Day, spectators will not be permitted onto the backyard, behind the children.
We have taken the decision not to put out chairs for guests (there are a number of reasons for this – all logistical). However, you are very welcome to bring deck chairs / picnic rugs if you would like something to sit on.
Please move swiftly to the far side of the field - we would like everyone in place before we bring the children out.
When you're watching Sports Day, please do not walk across to the children who will be sat on the other side of the track to you. Also, please do not call them over to you - it's really important we keep everyone safe and accounted for and staff will be busy making sure the races run to plan. The children will go back to class after it finishes – sorry, it is not possible for us to safely facilitate them popping across to say hello.
No dogs, smoking or vaping are allowed on school site.
If you need the toilet
Anyone spectating who requires the toilet should go to the school office. If you need to walk behind the start line of the track, please do so in between races. If you are on the junior yard (wheel chair access) and require the toilet you will need to ask a member of staff to help you as they will need to accompany you across the backyard and let you through the locked gate at the end.
Young children
If you have younger children with you, please keep them with you and supervise them closely.
How does Sports Day work?
Stickers
Stickers are given for first, second and third in every race. We make sure that no one goes without a sticker, by giving out Well Done stickers at the end. But we don't give every child a sticker for every race.
Number of races
In the infants (Nursery - Year 2), all children do all races.
In the juniors (Years 3-6), everyone takes part in the relays and at least one other race. However, we recognise that Sports Day isn't popular with everyone. The children are given an element of choice. Those who love Sports Day are in more races than those who don't. The final list of races, and who is taking part in what, is determined as near to the day as possible and there are always changes on the day if children are not in school. It is greatly appreciated that if you are going on holiday you let us know in advance so that we can plan around this.
After Sports Day
If Sports Day finishes earlier than 3:30, parents may wish to collect children early. Once the children have gone inside, parents are welcome to make their way to their child's normal entrance / exit door. We will release them – this would be a hand over, so if you have multiple children you’ll need to go to each door in turn. If you have a younger child in school (Reception - Year 2), you will also need to go to their classroom doors to collect them (please do not go to the office).
If your child is going home early with someone other than you, please make sure you let your child's teacher know in advance.
Finally, all children will be given a freezer pop courtesy of the PTFA (thank you PTFA!). If you do not wish your child to be given this please let your child's teacher know in advance.
