Andrew's Online Portfolio Fall 2024 computer art

Banana Raft

I was instructed to create a piece that was made with repeating patterns. To do this, I learned to use Corel Painter’s pattern feature (which I really despise but that’s besides the point). My goal was to make the end product aesthetically pleasing while staying true to the culture I was depicting, and so I depicted a Mangyan person holding onto a raft with bunches of bananas to sell down river, with the geometric designs (pakudos) that are frequently featured in their art. Mostly, my goal was to humanize the experiences of the Mangyans, highlighting their resilience even in the face of extreme poverty and limited technology. I feel I captured this fairly well as the image of someone braving rapids just to sell food at the market is pretty powerful. I hope the audience will think about how they can help fight poverty by standing up to the oppressive systems of power in their lives.

Flame Apple

In this project, I created an apple that appears from the front to be beautiful and illuminated by golden sunlight, but is charred and burning away beneath the facade. I learned how to use the reference image tool and creatively take inspiration from reference images. My goal was to show through the art that things are not always as they seem; sometimes people can appear as though they have things together, but are suffering on the inside. I hope the audience can learn empathy for those who they do not understand.

Radiance

In this project, I had to create an art piece like that of Andreas Preis, an artist who has had much success making art with geometric shapes and vibrant colors. I decided I wanted to depict one of my Philtronian characters, a deity-like being hailing from an ancient alien race. I drew this piece like stained glass on purpose; these beings are the height of arrogance in my stories, which is how I tend to view religious figures who hold nothing but empty promises. I learned how to apply paper textures to my digital artwork in this project. My goal was to create a cool as hell drawing of my Philtronian character that showed the extent of their arrogance and beauty at the same time. I feel as though I did this well by drawing them like the center of the sun. I hope the audience will be skeptical of anyone who promises grandiose things with nothing to back them up.

The Plagueverse

I was tasked with creating a piece using watercolor that included elements such as fans, branches, stars and spirals for optimal composition and movement. I settled on drawing a hell of my own imagination, the Plagueverse: an interstellar prison where nothing grows but ghostly cacti, and the inhabitants thereof turn to stone after spending enough time there. I learned to use watercolor and filters, especially with the glowing nebula backdrop details and the chains. My goal was to portray a sense of chaos and awe that one may experience upon witnessing such a realm of madness. I feel that I did really well with the intense color palette. I kind of pushed my limits there. I hope that the viewer gains an appreciation for how darkly unethical the concept of hell is.
