Summer Internship Spotlight Let's check in and see what some of our students are up to in the field this summer!

Forensic Science major Keelie Olkovikas is working with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner within the New Hampshire Department of Justice. Under the direct supervision of the Chief Forensic Investigator, Keelie is gaining hands-on experience with actual legal cases, performing essential duties such as creating crime scene photography digital displays, analyzing autopsy reports, and assisting wherever needed.

This internship has helped me to experience a real-life forensics job so that I have a better understanding for what type of career I choose to pursue in the future.

Business Administration major Adem Kica landed an internship at Northwestern Mutual, a financial services company with over 17,000 employees, ranked 110th on the 2024 Fortune 500 list. Their internship program has also been ranked in the top 5 in the United States within financial services, and in the top 10 for career development.

As a financial services intern, Adem works in a collaborative environment to provide expert guidance and innovative solutions for individuals and businesses in retirement planning, insurance and investment services, estate planning, business planning, education funding, and employee benefits. He also prepares marketing materials, meets and consults with clients, and identifies potential new clients.

Through this internship I was able to pass the State Exam and obtain my Life, Accident, and Health Insurance License, as well as attend training sessions focused on project management, selling skills, business etiquette, and presentation skills. The relevant experiences and transferrable skills that I'm acquiring through this role will help me tremendously in my post-graduation career and provide me with a competitive advantage over other candidates.

Cheryl Kohl, a Public Health and Wellness major, is working as a Summer Direct Care Intern with the Massachusetts Department of Developmental Services (DDS). Through this internship, Cheryl provides personal care and support to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, helping them to become fully engaged members of their community. She proudly approaches each day with a smile, and enjoys facilitating activities and projects that empower her patients.

My first week at this internship changed everything. I found my passion for helping others while making meaningful connections, impacting a population in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts that is often overlooked and underserved. Starting this work with individuals who utilize the Department of Developmental Services resources made me feel like I found my calling.

In the City of Champions, senior communication major Tom Crisafulli works as a Production Assistant for WEEI Sports Radio Network. As a production assistant, Tom's day-to-day is always unique. Some days, he's at the WEEI station in Brighton cutting up audio, while on Red Sox game days, you'll find him at the Fenway Park media press box or club house, recording audio for an on-air segment. Tom even had the unique opportunity to hop on the air to give his take on the 2024 NBA World Champion Boston Celtics during their title run.

The hands-on experience I’m getting at WEEI is going to be extremely valuable when I’m looking for a full time job, and on top of that, I get to watch how a full live production sports talk show runs daily. I’ve been super lucky to meet a lot of really nice people in the short time I’ve been at WEEI and I cannot wait to see what the rest of my internship has to offer.

In the field of social work, Avery Glennon serves as a clinical mental health counselor essential personnel at Baystate Community Services. Avery, who is majoring in Psychology, reports to the head of training in the outpatient clinic, and assists with important tasks such as client check-in, front-desk communication, and client interaction. While helping people get the social and emotional help they need, Avery has also enhanced her clinical skills with the client-facing position.

With this opportunity, I've gotten my foot in the door for social work and have been interested in exploring internships in other departments here. The internship is also helping me become more confident in the work world, and it's been a great experience so far.

Communication major Edward Evangelakos is working with one of the nation's premier collegiate summer baseball leagues as a game-day operations intern with the Orleans Firebirds of the Cape Cod Baseball League. Edward serves on a team with other interns, working collaboratively to ensure a high-quality experience for fans, players, and families. He assists with parking, merchandise and raffle ticket sales, venue set up, and more.

This internship has directly shown me how a successful team business is run. My favorite part of this experience so far has been making connections with all of my co-workers and working with the public.

Ryan Foley, a Sport and Recreation Management major, is sharpening up his leadership skills as a coach for the Burncoat boys' basketball team. He assists with player development, coaching players with individual training while serving as a mentor for young adults. Foley lays out practice plans, motivates the players, and provides guidance and support to help them meet their goals.

My favorite part of this internship was winning the championship earlier in the summer. It wasn't just because we won–but because of all the smiles on my team's faces, and how excited and proud they were to be champions.
