Coaches Corner
Hello to all from winter break! The Flock have finished off finals and the last part of the first semester schedule. The holidays are here and provide a chance to reflect and think about a simple, yet profound idea: gratitude! There's many things to be grateful for in Flock Land.. and my number one thought centers on the fact we have a group of high character young men. Since August, they have worked extremely hard and enjoyed the journey along the way. Competition! Joy! Celebrating team success! Our team compass has helped guide us to a strong start with lots of room for growth.
I enjoyed putting together this newsletter because it seems so much has happened in such a short period of time. The return of the Wild Goose Classic! A team building trip to NYC! D1 exhibitions at Navy and Loyola! Good times had by all.
We return around the New Year and will continue to improve as a program. A special thank you to our players, families, coaches, alumni, and the Washington College community who have supported our efforts in 2025.
Onward, Coach Begly
Chapter 1 Review
In our program, we like to separate our full season into smaller chapters. Only two remain!
Chapter 1 was our November slate: a 6-0 D3 record and 2 difficult, yet rewarding D1 exhibition games.
The Wild Goose Classic returned for the first time in decades and the Flock responded with two strong victories to take home gold. It will become a yearly tradition once again, and we were so pleased to welcome alumni from all years back to Chestertown.
Washington College 75, Springfield 71
In a fantastic back and forth game, the Flock knocked off a strong program from a top-ranked conference in New England. The guys played with passion and poise late in the game. The win was one of the program's best in years.
Washington College 64, Navy 97
We played tough + spirited against an excellent D1 opponent. Lessons learned in victory and defeat.
Chapter 2 Review
Finding a way on the road...
Wheels up! Six wins on the road is more than the previous five seasons combined. It wasn't always pretty, but the team found a way in NYC (2x) and DC. We also got to play new opponents with different styles from the Skyline and Atlantic East Conferences.
Team Building
Each year, we pile in the vans, enjoy the driving of Coach King and Coach Begly (hmmm, it is slow but safe), and head to a sprawling Airbnb. This year took us to Brunswick, NJ before our NYC trip. We reflected on our team goals, had a little fun, and spent time away from our phones.
Up next: Chapter 3
We return to campus around the New Year to prepare for the next chapter of the season. The first two games are big ones! We would love to see you all in Chestertown for the conference opener, especially our little legends from the summertime Begly Basketball Camps.
Jan. 5th: At Eastern Shore rival Salisbury. 5PM.
Jan. 10th: 'Camp Day' - HOME v Ursinus. Centennial opener. 1PM.
Alumni Assists
As previously mentioned, the Wild Goose Classic returned this November. Thank you to the 30+ alumni who attended and spent time after the game with our current players and families. The 1989 and 1990 teams and the 2018-2019 team were especially well represented. A special thank you to Scott Jones '89 and Nick Romeo '19 for their work and organization!
Next year, we will be hosting the 'Goose' November 13th and 14th, with an alumni game and gathering on the 14th. Make a note now! We would love to see as many members of the Washington College MBB family as possible!
