Dark Sky Ordinance Introduced

The City Council last night voted to enact a Dark Sky Ordinance which would introduce Chapter 15.88 to the Brisbane Municipal Code concerning outdoor lighting standards. Brisbane is one of the first communities on the Peninsula to get to this point; Portola Valley has an ordinance and other cities are starting their own processes). For our ordinance, more clarifications will be made around things such as outdoor entrance lighting and the timing of seasonal or holiday lighting before this item comes back to the Council for a second reading and potential adoption in January. We thank the Open Space and Ecology, especially their Dark Skies subcommittee comprised of Barbara Ebel, Michele Salmon, and Erin Becker for their many hours spent working on this ordinance with staff, along with the many (173 to be exact) community members who contributed their thoughts to OSEC and ultimately the City Council through the Dark Skies Survey. It's clear that this community values the natural environment, wildlife, and habitat that surrounds us on San Bruno Mountain. Expect to begin seeing extensive education and outreach to make sure our residents and businesses understand the benefits that lowered and shielded lighting have in regards to the betterment, health, and safety of all in our community!

OSEC Member Barbara Ebel highlighted this slide in John C. Barentine's presentation which showed how when outdoor lighting was shielded, the result was decreased glare and the ability to see the person standing at the gate.

Get Your Brisbane Stars After Thanksgiving!

We've been hearing from more residents interested in getting a wood-frame star. The Brisbane Chamber oversees this much-cherished program in town. Did you know that Golden State Lumber donates the lumber, Brisbane Hardware donates the hardware, Lyon Medical Construction donates their time to pick up the lumber, and Starmaker Bob Wilson donates his time to craft the stars? If you'd like to be a part of this wonderful holiday tradition and hang a Brisbane star from your home or business, please consider making a donation to the Chamber, where the funds will go directly towards supporting their Scholarship Program! See the graphic for the suggested donation, based on star size. Thank you.

To place an order for pick up (after Thanksgiving), please email madison@brisbanechamber.org.

2023 State of the City Address

The Brisbane Chamber also holds the annual State of the City event, which was hosted by the City this past week inside the Community Meeting Room at City Hall. Mayor Madison Davis' talk can be viewed below, and is a part of the State of the City playlist if you wanted to watch others back (the earliest available on our YouTube channel being from 2012)!

Paving Work on Upper Portion of Vis Starts Monday

Dates have been set for repaving work on Visitacion, with the No Parking signs put out earlier this week on Visitacion between Mendocino up to San Benito. The contractor will start this coming Monday, November 20th with grinding and Tuesday the 21st with paving. Striping layout will occur the following Tuesday the 28th after Thanksgiving, with the upper portion of Vis being striped on Thursday, the 30th. For businesses and commercial accounts, South San Francisco Scavenger is requesting getting your bins put out the night before your usual garbage day next Monday and Tuesday, as their trucks will be coming through early and need to be off of the roadway by 8am when work starts. Note: parking is not permitted between 8am – 5pm next Monday and Tuesday on Vis between Mendocino and San Benito, or when striping is occurring. Flaggers will direct motorists traveling on Visitacion, who should expect minor delays during times of work. We thank the public for their patience as this project is completed.

Last Call to Take the 101 Corridor Connect Multimodal Strategy Online Survey!

If you travel along the Highway 101 Corridor within one mile of Highway 101 in the cities of Brisbane, South San Francisco, San Bruno and Millbrae, the San Mateo County Transportation Authority (TA) would like your feedback! The TA wants to hear about your experience traveling along the 101 corridor and learn what improvements are most important to you. Your input will help develop the 101 Corridor Connect North County Multimodal Strategy to improve and encourage the use of different types of transportation. TA staff will use community feedback to develop priorities for the types of projects that should be included in the strategy. There are more projects than funds available, and your input will help the TA make sure funding is going where it is needed most.

Take the brief survey here. The survey is open through today, November 17th. You can also let them know where you want to see improvements on this interactive map.

Letters to Santa

Get them in by Dec. 8th! Yesterday, Public Works helped set out the Letters to Santa mailbox, located outside of Midtown Market. Write Santa a letter by Friday, December 8th if you'd like to receive a response back...from the North Pole, of course!

Diwali Event at the Library is Tomorrow, November 18th

A reminder that from 1-4p this Saturday, you can join community members, City staff, and Library staff for a Diwali celebration at the Brisbane Library. There will be dancing, henna, arts and crafts, and of course, food! The food is made possible by the City's IDEA Committee, who are able to cover the food costs thanks to purchases made by community members on the City's Etsy store, Betsy! Thank you for everyone that's placed an order to show your Brisbane pride!
