  • 💛 Support to get local people riding
  • 🌊 Explore beyond G.I – discover scenic shared paths and connected cycling routes from GI to the waterfront and beyond
  • 🎉 Community highlights - celebrating our local champions

There’s a lot to look forward to and we’re excited to have you with us on this journey.

We’ve chosen the whakataukī “He rākau whakatō, he hua whakatipu - A tree that is planted will bear fruit” to reflect the investment being made now. Safer streets and stronger connections support the wellbeing and mobility of our community now and for generations to come.

🚲 #RideGI

We're helping G.I get riding

RideGI is Auckland Transport’s local cycling programme in Glen Innes.

It supports people of all ages and abilities to feel confident riding bikes in and around G.I, and to connect to key places and spaces locally and beyond. Riding saves money on fuel, improves our community’s health and wellbeing, and is a fun activity to do together with your whānau. Through RideGI, AT is working alongside schools, whānau and community partners to deliver:

  • learn‑to‑ride and confidence‑building activities
  • group rides and local events
  • programmes that remove cost barriers to cycling
  • practical support to help G.I locals use new and existing cycleways

The new and existing cycling facilities help connect people to schools, homes, parks, shops, train station, spaces and places in G.I and beyond.

This map shows where you can go on a bike in and around GI using the existing, new and planned bike paths in G.I.

Riders of GI

It was awesome to see that G.I riders of all ages took part in our recent kids and adults learn to ride classes. In May we are offering free fun family learn to ride classes so the whole whānau can learn together. Check out our bike events below.

Want to ride but need help affording a bike? We got you! 😊

Ride it Keep it 🫱🏽‍🫲🏾

AT is supporting social enterprise Got To Get Out to help remove barriers so local people can afford to own and ride a bike to get around G.I. This kaupapa is for local people who live in Glen Innes, Panmure and Point England. The programme is open to:

  • Students Year 5 and above
  • Senior citizens
  • Community service card holders

If you, or someone you know, might benefit from this programme, please email: cyclingevents@at.govt.nz

🚲 Your local Glen Innes Bike Hub

The Glen Innes Bike Hub at Maybury Reserve on Taniwha Street is a welcoming community space where people can get help with bike repairs, find affordable bikes, and get support to start riding. In March, the Bike Hub welcomed 482 visitors and helped fix 268 bikes. 🕒 Open Thursday to Sunday, 10am–2pm

🌊 Explore beyond G.I by bike

Did you know you can ride, walk or run from Glen Innes all the way to the waterfront using Auckland’s connected shared path network?

Here's how!

Starting from Merton Road, Te Ara Ki Uta Ki Tai (the path of land to sea) takes you along a scenic 7km shared path to Tamaki Drive. From there, you can keep riding into the city, head east toward Mission Bay, or simply enjoy exploring more of Auckland on two wheels. Whether you’re commuting to work or uni, meeting friends, getting active with the whānau, or planning a weekend adventure, this is a great reminder of how connected GI is becoming. For local people in GI, this means more opportunities to ride further, explore more, save money on fuel, and make the most of Auckland’s growing cycle network while supporting health and wellbeing.

Community highlights

🎉 Tamaki Regeneration Community Day

Last month, we were thrilled to be part of the Tamaki Regeneration community day and talking to locals about everything cycling

Thanks to Tamaki Regeneration for organising such a fantastic community day. There were prizes for anyone who arrived by bike and lots of people had a go at blowing up our inflatable penguin by riding a bike. We thank everyone who stopped by for a kōrero, collected a prize or joined the celebration. We love seeing our community come together in such vibrant ways.

🌟 Community champion and local bike legend recognised 🫶🏾

Big congratulations to G.I. and Bike Eastern legend Roger Lacey, who has received national recognition as Volunteer of the Month from Keep New Zealand Beautiful. Roger helps lead the Love Your Path community group, which cares for sections of Te Ara ki Uta Ki Tai between Glen Innes and St Johns. Alongside a dedicated crew of volunteers, Roger helps organise regular clean-ups, planting days and maintenance working bees to keep the shared path welcoming and cared for. The group formed after the 2023 floods and has since grown into an incredible community effort helping restore the path and surrounding environment for everyone to enjoy. Ngā mihi Roger and the Love Your Path crew for helping keep GI beautiful 💙

🚧 Who else is working in GI?

Updates on other AT projects in G.I – and what’s next?

Glen Innes Station underpass renewal project

Work to renew and upgrade the Glen Innes Station underpass started in April 2026 and is expected to finish by mid 2026. This work is being done alongside construction of the new pedestrian bridge to help reduce disruption and make the train station safer and accessible for everyone. During construction:

  • Access to Glen Innes Station will be via the Apirana Avenue level crossing only
  • People travelling between the Felton Mathew Avenue side of the station and the town centre side will need to detour via Merton Road (see detour map below)
detour map showing how to access the station safely

We know there’s been a lot of work happening across G.I and appreciate everyone’s patience while this work is underway.
