Markina-Xemien - Monasterio Zenarruza Camino del norte - spain 2025

9 JUNE 2025

You’re all in luck, we still have internet coverage, so if you thought you were going to get a rest day from our blog, then we apologise…

I think the sun shining and the birds singing make a big difference to your waking experience. So today we were in good spirits especially with an easy short walking day.

We had an excellent breakfast from the local Cafe with a second round of coffee as this has been the best coffee we’ve had since being in Spain!

Today was a steady uphill walk following a stream until we deviated to follow the path directly to the monastery. We planned to arrive before the 2pm lunch, but on arrival found out that lunch wasn’t an option and dinner was being served at 8:00!! We could return back to the town we had previously passed through, or tough it out. Luckily the monastery had a little shop where we purchased a block of chocolate, a local monastery beer and an ice cream! Slim pickings, so a little bit of prayer and fasting will tied us over until the pilgrim dinner!

We ate dinner outside on the terrace with all the pilgrims staying at the monastery albergue (we were the privileged few that had paid for private rooms!)

Whilst it was a great location for a shared meal, the only food on offer was bread, water and pasta bolognaise. Now completely ravenous, we all had 3 helpings as we shared Camino stories with those around us. Unfortunately the two monks running the show had things rapped up rather ubrptly and before we knew it were heading off to our rooms for an early night!
