PRINCIPAL’S COLUMN

School Excellence Plan

After a lengthy period of consultation and collaboration, our staff well into the process of implementing our agreed School Excellence initiatives.

Under the ‘Wellbeing’ heading our Deputy Principals are leading a comprehensive review of student behaviour management, focusing on a clear balance between high expectations and accommodating the needs of our students. Additionally, we are seeking to strengthen student connection to our school with a focus on encouraging greater parent and community involvement, beginning with more regular open nights for current and prospective parents.

Our teachers are also working with the Department’s focus on the ‘Explicit Teaching’ framework. This is an evidence based framework which identifies teaching practices which improve student learning outcomes. We are working to embed good practices which are already in place, and to see more ‘Explicit Teaching’ elements being put into practice across more classrooms.

Through our work together we are working to sustain a culture of high expectations, whether this be through Positive Behaviour for Learning in our junior years, or a strong focus on working towards success and positive post school outcomes in our senior years.

State Music Camp

Congratulations to Austin (trumpet) and Bodhi (trombone) Kirkup who have been selected for the State Music Camp over the first weekend of the coming school holidays. Success in music, a great outcome in itself, also has strong connections with success in STEM related subjects. All the best to Austin and Bodhi

Buckley Sheild Rugby League

Congratulations also to our U14s Rugby League team for their win over Casino High School last week in a fast paced and free flowing game. All players performed exceptionally well and demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship. Denver Collins was named player of the match for his impressive defensive efforts and strong attacking contributions.

With this win, the boys finished at the top of their pool on the North Coast, placing them among the 20 final teams in the state. They will next face Camden Haven High School at home before the end of term.

Best of luck to the boys and their coach, Mr Hillard.

Uniform

We have certainly experienced a cold start to winter. Congratulations to the majority of students who have worn school uniform jackets and jumpers in response to the drop in temperature. A reminder that an acceptable alternative is to wear a plain, preferably dark “sloppy joe” under school shirts. Official school sport jumpers are also acceptable. Non school sport related “hoodies” or multi coloured / patterned jumpers are not part of our uniform. I remain grateful to students and their families for their support of our very practical uniform requirements.

Wishing all of our school community a great week.

GENERAL NEWS

Beyond Broncos Workshop

The Beyond the Broncos girl’s academy held their Term 2 workshop this week, facilitated by our amazing Broncos ambassador Alex Glen.

This terms workshop focused on the importance of NAIDOC and identifying your personal values and beliefs. The girls had the opportunity to hear from our other deadly Broncos ambassadors Tamika Upton and Kotoni Staggs as to why NAIDOC week is such a significant time for them and how they like to make a difference in their communities. This year’s theme being The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy, student support officer Jasmin and Alex had the opportunity to spark conversations between the group about the importance of taking ownership as young and proud Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander girls that are strong and empowered with the ability to make a change in their school and community.

Dance Excellence

Our Dance Excellence students have been busy performing over the last couple of weeks at Far North Coast Dance Festival and DanceX Competition. It's busy and adrenaline filled, but it's what we do best.

We took four performance pieces to the Far North Coast Dance Festival at Twin Towns along with many other local public schools from Northern NSW. The students performed skillfully and also represented our Kingscliff High spirit throughout the day.

Congratulations to the Year 7 Company for their first performance at Kingscliff High School, you did so well. The audience had their breath taken away by the showstopping finish to Breathe.

We also had four dancers, Delilah, Jade, Nevaeh and Mabel represent our school in the Far North Coast Ensemble who performed brilliantly.

We took our senior companies to compete at the DanceX Competition. It was great to get amongst other local schools and dance together at the Murwillumbah Civic Centre. Our hip hop piece received 2nd place and was also awarded the Most Memorable routine of the day.

Congratulations to our Year 12 students Bella and Josie who entered their HSC work, (performed by Jade and Nevaeh) with Jade winning the section for student choreography. We loved watching you all on stage!

Finally, this week we are sending some of our indigenous students to Tweed River High School to attend a dance workshop with Bangarra Dance Theatre. This is an amazing opportunity for our students and we can't wait to see what they learn.

If you would like to see these works in action, make sure you come along to our CAPA Collective performance evenings in Week 10.
