Project Description:

For nearly 40 years, the Greencastle community envisioned a YMCA that could bring people together and reflect energy, pride and optimism. That vision endured through decades of study and renewed conversation until the City of Greencastle, the YMCA of the Wabash Valley, and Putnam County Hospital aligned to make it real. Funded by the city and leased to the YMCA and hospital, the new Putnam County YMCA is a civic anchor designed with the community and purposefully shaped to serve it. Architecturally, the building announces itself with confidence. Sweeping entry canopies and a handsome contemporary facade establish a clear sense of arrival, while expansive north‑facing glazing engages the adjacent highway and fills the interior with soft, consistent daylight. Inside, a dramatic front lobby opens to long, uninterrupted lines of vision across active spaces, reinforcing intuitive wayfinding, safety and a constant sense of energy. Expressive ceiling features, layered lighting and carefully composed materials elevate everyday movement into moments of experience. Bold, intentional color choices reinforce the YMCA brand throughout the facility. Vibrant hues are used strategically to energize spaces, support orientation and create a welcoming environment that feels both aspirational and approachable, while durable finishes ensure long‑term performance. Program spaces include three basketball courts, a fitness center, group exercise rooms, teen and child-watch spaces, offices and a large community room with a teaching kitchen. An additional 11,000 square feet of licensed medical space houses prompt care, family medicine, physical therapy, and occupational medicine, physically linking healthcare and wellness. Together, the architecture delivers more than a building. It creates a vibrant, welcoming hub where design, color and space bring the community together every day.
