A Warm Message From Kirsty Kurilowicz
One of my favourite Christmas decorations is fairy lights. They are warm and bright and look so good when darkness falls. The Bible mentions light many times, but especially about Jesus: John 1:5 “In him (Jesus) there was life. That life was the light for the people of the world. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overpowered it.” John 8:12 Jesus said; “I am the light of the world. The person who follows me will never live in darkness. He will have the light that gives life.” So, at Christmas time, when Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus our Saviour, we remember the light of the world who saves us from our sin and shines in darkness. Why not look up the book of John in a Bible or a free Bible app (called Bible) on your phone and see why Christians love Jesus (and fairy lights!). Kirsty Kurilowicz Primary School Christian Studies
Christmas Carols
On the evening of 5th December, a packed St John's Anglican Church enjoyed an hour-long Sapphire Coast Anglican College Christmas Carol Service, followed by a delightful array of refreshments provided by our Parents and Friends Association. Student readers helped set the scene, with passages relating to some of the most famous Christmas hymns, including Hark the Herald Angels Sing, and O Come All Ye Faithful, sung by the congregation. Interspersed with the congregation's contributions were a variety of other items, including the Primary Choir and Jorjiya with a Junior Ensemble. We were especially pleased to welcome a number of guests from St John's parish who highlighted the student singers as their favourite moments of a lovely event.
A Christmas Message
Presence over Presents – What Does Christmas Mean to You?
When we look back on our own childhood Christmases, a flood of memories return — the excitement, the carols, the smell of Christmas lunch and yes, even Santa. Many of us remember the thrill of unwrapping that one gift we had been hoping for all year. Some of us might even remember promising to be ‘extra good’, hoping it would help that present find its way under the tree. Of course, as children, we didn’t understand the love and sacrifice behind those moments — the late nights, the careful saving, and the quiet joy our families felt in giving us something that made our faces light up. But when we think more deeply, we realise something important: while we might remember one or two of those special presents, what stays with us most is who was there. We remember the people who made us feel loved, safe, and full of joy. We remember the laughter around the table, the early-morning excitement, the hugs and the warmth of simply being together. And, of course, we hold close the memory of loved ones no longer with us. Life teaches us, even from an early age, that presence is more precious than any present. No gift, no matter how wonderful, can replace the joy of being together. Now, as adults, many of us pour that same love and care into making Christmas meaningful for our own families. Seeing joy shine in our children’s faces is worth every effort. And in an even deeper, far greater way, God delights in seeing hope and joy in our faces. He loves us so completely that He gave us the greatest gift of all — His Son, Jesus, the baby we celebrate today. Jesus grew up to teach us something beautiful: that being truly present with one another — showing kindness, compassion, forgiveness and love — matters far more than anything wrapped in paper. And God’s presence in our lives is a gift freely given. We don’t have to earn it, deserve it, or be ‘extra good’ for it. It is for all of us, at any moment, no matter who we are or what our Christmas table looks like this year. And as we celebrate, we also remember those who may feel alone this Christmas. A small act of kindness, a special word or pausing to simply notice someone can remind them of a truth that Christmas proclaims so clearly: Emmanuel, ‘God with us’; we are never truly alone. So, as we gather this Christmas, may we treasure every moment and remember the baby Jesus in a manger who grew up to be the Light of the World, offering love, hope and life freely to us all. Four Winds Spring Youth Music Festival
The wider community was delighted to experience musical performances from SCAC students at the Four Winds Spring Youth Music Festival on November 23rd.
As well as the highlights (like a brass quintet arrangement of Holst's Jupiter, Jorjiya's song with a string quartet, band and choir, through to the jazz band finishing the day in spectacular fashion), our students featured prominently as soloists, accompanists, and orchestral performers. All students (and their patient parents) must be congratulated for their hard work leading up to the event. Mrs Rebecca Stewart
Pre-Kindergarten And Kindergarten Graduation
As we come to the close of another wonderful year, I want to take a moment to sincerely thank all the parents of our Pre-K children. Your encouragement, involvement, and support throughout the year have made such a difference, and I am truly grateful for the partnership we share in helping your children grow and thrive. It has been such a joy to watch each child develop new skills, build confidence, and grow in independence since the beginning of the year. Their progress has been remarkable, and I am so proud of all that they have achieved. For those children moving on to Kindy, I have every confidence that they are ready for this next exciting step in their learning journey. I wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas, and I look forward to seeing you again in the new year. For the children who will be staying with me next year, I am already excited to welcome you back in January. I can’t wait to continue our adventures together and see how much more you will learn and grow. Wishing all of you a joyful holiday season filled with rest, laughter, and special family moments. Have a lovely break, and I look forward to beginning another wonderful year with you soon. Warm regards, Mrs Fish
Year 10 Formal
Year 10 celebrated the end of their Junior schooling on 27th November by having a formal at the Tathra Surf Club.
Students danced the cha cha, guests ate wood-fired pizza, and we said goodbye to the following students:
- Chiranjeev Randhawa and Savanah Papalia are off to Erindale College in Canberra to participate in the sports program to further their soccer skills.
- Maddy Weber, Mason Seymour, Joel Draayers, Daniel Bragg and Dusty Douglas are off to different schools, TAFE or looking for work.
- Joe McMahon is moving on to an apprenticeship as a fitter machinist with Fimac Engineering in Bega.
- Amber Cameron is completing a traineeship in Agriculture with Kimbers Dairy.
Good luck to all who are leaving the College!
Miss Clair Hopkins
Science Teacher Association NSW and National Young Scientist Award Programs
Congratulations to all the participants of the Science Teacher Association NSW and National Young Scientist Award Programme (STANSW Young Scientist). Congratulations to Jasmine Smyth and Duncan Stewart, who were invited to attend this year's NSW Young Scientist Grand Awards in November. Jasmine received the Year 9-10 Science Encouragement Award and a Distinction Award. Jasmine has been invited to submit her investigations into the National Competition, the ASTA I3 Awards, with the results revealed in 2026. Jasmine’s investigation, ‘Twin Telepathy,’ looked into whether there is a mental connection between twins. Duncan received the Year 5-6 Science Encouragement Award and a Distinction Award for his investigation titled ‘Under Pressure’. Duncan investigated the optimum amount of pressure required in a tumbling mat for performing his many gymnastics flips. Congratulations to Xavier Louie, who was named a National Finalist and was awarded the Year 7-8 Curiosity and Ingenuity Award at the National 2025/26 ASTA i3 Awards. Xavier’s investigation, ‘Mary Poppins goes to Ikea', was nominated for the National Competition following last year’s NSW awards.
End Of 2025 Presentation
Bega Civic Centre was once again the venue for a delightful, celebratory evening on Tuesday, 9th December, as a large audience comprising every element of the Sapphire Coast Anglican College community gathered to recognise student successes during 2025. We were especially blessed to have the Right Reverend Dr Mark Short, Bishop of Canberra and Goulburn, Dr Jill Ireland, Chair of the College Board and Mrs Cathie Haynes, Board Member, among us. A variety of musical performances provided very polished and entertaining distractions throughout the event, showcasing the impressive range of SCAC student and teacher talent. Initial feedback about the new format, with an intermission separating the Primary and Secondary awards, has been very positive.
News In Year 1
Year 1 decorated shopping bags, which are being turned into Christmas bags. The students will use the bags to take home their amazing Christmas decorations and lovely creations. Mrs Yvonne Brown
Little Lights
The Little Lights program completed its first term with some delightful moments shared between our Year 9 and 10 students and their very little guests and their families. Many thanks to Stef Brown and Millie Proudlove for this initiative, and for some high-quality bus driving support from Richard Arbon and Dave Smith. We are also very grateful for the warmth of the welcome to St John's Anglican Church from Reverends Mandy Wheatley, David Luck and a host of parishioners.
Celebration Of Art
What Talent We Have In Our School!
A big shout out to Mr Cook for sharing his printmaking expertise with us and for joining our excursion to SECCA Bega. We were inspired by Mr Cook and Alick Tipoti's work, and used these techniques in our Christmas artworks.
Mr Cook also shared his knowledge of local landmarks and Indigenous connections to Country, as Year 5 and 6 created watercolours of local granite boulders. Years 3 and 4 enjoyed creating and performing puppet plays that incorporated links to their Geography unit about places. Mrs Whyman
Breakfast Club
Our Friday Breakfast Club has been busy as usual, with some amazing youngens leading the kitchen. We are seeking voluntary parents, carers and teachers for next year to supervise.
Term 4 Piano
Our piano pod has been full of excitement this term, with delighted students reaching their goals of learning 20 or 40 pieces in a year.
Ben and Aslan have recorded new exam pieces, Asha and Benji are eagerly awaiting their exam feedback, while Felicity and Victoria are pictured above with their certificates of achievement. Benji and Asha have also both received a Pass with High Distinction! Mrs Rebecca Stewart
Stage 2 Camp
Stage 2, Year 3 and 4 went on their overnight camp to Camp Kianinny on the 11th and 12th of November with Mrs Louie, Mr Lambie, Mrs Milliss, Mrs Whyman, Mrs Cunningham and Mrs Trevaskis.
A Recount on Camp Kianinny by Artemis Poole
It all started when we got on the bus. It was a rough ride, but we got over it. When we arrived at Camp Kianinny, Cody kindly welcomed us. Then Mrs Milliss told us to make our beds. I chose the top bunk. Soon, we got into our groups. I was in group one with Lola, Heidi and Florence. We went canoeing. It was really fun, with lots of excitement, and it was funny when Daniel, Jackson and Finn flipped their canoe. Then we went to the small pool. After that, we had muffins for morning tea. Next, we did mini golf. I wish it were real golf, but anyway, we had fun. Soon it was lunch, and we had yummy stuff out of our lunchboxes. Then we played on the oval with our besties. Then we did the scenery course. I ran into trees, though I got over it. Next was dinner, and we had nachos. They were good. Then it was nighttime. For dessert, we had ice cream and chocolate mousse. Before bed, we went out for a night walk and a campfire. We needed our torches. It was fun. In the middle of the night, I saw Heidi crawling on the floor. In the morning, I woke up to hear Ruby and Sophia talking very loudly. After breakfast, we did the zipline. The zipline was the best part. Then we got to play for a while, and then it was lunch, we had yummy wraps. In the afternoon, we came back to school on the bus.
Focus 40
This term, Lilly Whiter in Year 4 has been learning to use a device called a Focus 40. This device has been a “game changer” according to Lilly as she learns to navigate her laptop as well as braille. She can use the Focus 40 to input braille, and it will display on her laptop screen in print where the screen reader (JAWS) can read it back to her, or she can read it in braille on the Focus 40.
In one of her Nextsense lessons, her teacher, Ms Chavez, asked Lilly to complete a comprehension worksheet, “How to Make a Cupcake Christmas tree”. Lilly had to read the instructions and then answer the questions using JAWS (screen reader) and the Focus 40. After she completed the worksheet, we thought it would be a fun activity to actually make a cupcake Christmas tree for her class. So with help from her friend Julia and Mrs Moulton, Lilly was able to make the creation which her classmates enjoyed. Mrs Lucy Trevaskis
Year 6 - Last Days Of Primary School
Year 6 have been making the most of their last days of primary school. This week, they went down to the Ag Plot to work with Dan. They learnt about why soil, oxygen and water are good for the environment. Dan showed the students various watering systems and challenged them to think about what the most resourceful way to water a garden would be.
Students then got their hands dirty in the garden and learnt how the 'lasagne method' was done. They layered wet newspaper, mulch, and compost. Miss Emily Hocking
Visit From Faith Behrens Of Bega Group
Thank you again to Faith Behrens of Bega Group for visiting our new HSC Agriculture, Business Studies and Hospitality students to give another excellent annual talk on the production and marketing of the Bega Group project. SO INFORMATIVE! As always, she ended her excellent talk with some fantastic Bega Group merch!
Just over $5 billion to our Australian economy is being contributed by Bega Group... So proud to be a Bega Valleyian! Mrs Heidi Marksel
Noticias En Español
Here are some photos of Year 8 work relating to our Spanish food unit. Most of them are ‘la gente de comida’ (food people). Students had to interview each other in Spanish about foods they like, and then they created a person out of that food.
There were also a couple of other tasks where they could combine their creativity with their language skills. Miss Lara Strelnikow
Year 9 And 10 Art Excursion
On Tuesday, the 25th November, Year 9 and 10 Elective Art students visited SECCA- South East Centre for Contemporary Art in Bega.
We went to view the exhibition by Torres Strait Islander artist Alick Tipoti, who creates large-scale bronze works and lino prints that tell the story of his culture and family. The class had studied Alick Tipoti and explored his lino carvings in preparation for their own narrative prints earlier in the year. It was fantastic to see the artworks in person! Miss Clair Hopkins
SCAC Concert Band
At the beginning of November, the SCAC Concert Band performed at 'Solo/Trio', a concert presented by the Sapphire Coast Concert Band at the Twyford Theatre. They were joined on stage by Veronica Abbot and Jason Dempsey (members of the SCCB) for performances of Great Movie Adventures and Aladdin.
To say that they performed really well would be an understatement. They have come such a long way this year - and I know they can't wait to get on stage at Presentation Evening in December and share some more music with the community! Mr Steve Fitzgerald

Year 8
Our Year 8 Aggies have had a very productive semester, ending on some serious prep for the holidays in packing up garlic, moving compost, moving sheep, preparing polyhoop irrigation and building a fox-proof run for our chickens. WELL DONE, YEAR 8!
Year 9/10 Operation Sheep and Calf Swap
In the final weeks of term, with sheep and calves having completed their vaccinations and drenches, Year 9/10 Aggies successfully moved our sheep to the bottom paddock (to the nice short feed thankfully slashed by Glenn Umbers). We walked our baby calves - now 5 months - to the long feed in our front paddock (thankfully prepared by Andrew Ireland of SFS, Rick Beveridge and many others). For some of our Year 10 students, this was our final big prac in Ag. Thank you also to the Year 8s who stepped in to assist!
Dairy Queen
An outstanding Year 10 student set to be a star in our essential Bega Dairy Industry! Amber has been an absolute blessing to Agriculture from Year 8 through to Year 10 while completing a School-Based Apprenticeship/Traineeship in Dairy this year. Every year, Amber has shown such dedication to our three sets of poddy calves, coming in on mornings, afternoons, weekends and holidays to tend caringly to our four-legged friends. Where the rest of us might struggle to get close to these animals, Amber can walk on up and feed, measure and halter our calves like she is their mum.
At the same time, Amber has been a mentor to our upcoming Aggies, especially Charlie and Nate, on a calf milk feeding morning! We wish her all the very best, along with our other amazing Year 10s who have also left the College to embark on careers essential to our valley and beyond! Mrs Heidi Marksel
SASSA Touch Football
What a wonderful day of school sport! 43 Secondary School students represented SCAC at the SASSA Touch Football Day in Moruya on 25 November. These students made up four teams: U15 Girls, U15 Boys, Open Girls and Open Boys. The students competed strongly, and their attitude and behaviours were excellent. They represented themselves and SCAC exceptionally well and were complimented on their conduct and abilities by other schools and referees.
Thanks to Mr Crowley for organising and coordinating this opportunity for the students, including conducting trials, selecting teams and running lunchtime training sessions leading up to the event.
Thanks to Mr Cerveny and Mrs Duffy for attending and coaching teams on the day, and to Mr Crowley, who coached two teams on the day. The results indicate that SCAC is definitely improving in terms of representation and talent, with the Open Girls convincingly winning their age group. The Under 15 Boys and U15 Girls came 2nd, and the Open Boys came 3rd.
In addition, 12 students were successful in SASSA team selection and will represent SASSA at the AICES selection day in Sydney early next year. Leah Kelly, Ella Inskip, Sophie Williams, Piper Duffy, Zoe Duffy, Nate Bobbin, Sam Baggett, Marcus Peres, Hunter, Lawson Umbers, Jessop Laidlaw and Kaleb Inskip. Mrs Heidi Duffy
Fling Physical Theatre
SCAC Students Explore Physical Theatre and Parkour with Fling Theatre Company
Students from Sapphire Coast Anglican College recently participated in dynamic and energising workshops with Fling Theatre Company, a Bega-based professional theatre company known for its innovative work with young people. The workshops focused on physical theatre and parkour, challenging students to explore movement, space and storytelling through the body.
Through a series of high-energy activities, students experimented with jumping, rolling, and spatial responses, building trust and ensemble awareness while developing strength, agility and confidence. The parkour elements encouraged creative problem-solving and risk-taking, as students learned to move efficiently and experiment with movement. SCAC sincerely thanks Fling Theatre Company for providing such an engaging and professionally enriching experience, and for inspiring our students through innovative physical theatre practice.
Fantastic Fizzics
What a wonderful presentation by FIZZICS education on STEM and the Defence Force that visited our Year 8 and 9 students on Tuesday. Some fantastic demos and great learning! Thank you, Mrs Weber, for organising! Mrs Heidi Marksel
Elephant Toothpaste
Mrs Amey and Mrs Flowers' Science classes made "elephant toothpaste" to look at chemical reactions. Check it out below!
Year 10 Work Experience
Our Year 10 and 11 students have been busy this term learning in the workplace. Year 11 Tourism and Hospitality students had the opportunity to tour the Disney Wonder cruise ship in the Port of Eden, and they even saw Minnie Mouse and Belle. Tourism students have been working at the Eden Wharf, welcoming domestic and international cruise ship passengers and providing visitor information on arrival.
Year 10 students have undertaken an exciting variety of work experience last week. Four students observed nursing, midwifery and physiotherapy at the South East Regional Hospital. Cooper tested out being a journalist with ABC South East radio, and Evie became a primary school teacher for a week at Candelo Public School. Workplace learning is invaluable in gaining employability skills, testing out a career pathway and learning from industry professionals.
Year 12 Retreat
Our Leadership team spent Thursday, 6th November, in Tathra, discussing how to enhance the culture of the school. The remainder of Year 12 joined at Wambiri campgrounds the following day.
We were joined by Richard Williams, Mr Trevaskis and Mr Proudlove to explore what makes good leaders. We also spent time on Friday enjoying activities as a group, with a barbecue, playing tips and walking along the beach. Miss Clair Hopkins
