SLT Update
This week I was delighted to attend Summer Cup and see our students in action. I have to say they were very impressive in the resilience and ambition they showed on the field and in other events across the day. It was great to see CRA pick up more medals than last year and be active participants in the swimming event for the first time and picking up medals in the event too!
The Summer Cup gives our sporting students an opportunity to shine and they shone bright, especially in the level of respect they showed; shaking umpire and participants' hands after each game in the Boccia and congratulating their competitors. We also took home the Table Tennis Cup which we are very proud of.
As we come into the penultimate week of school for this academic year, we have a busy schedule of events lined up, starting next Tuesday with Sports Day. Students will have a briefing on Monday 7th in assembly about the day so they come prepared for the event.
Have a wonderful weekend.
Miss King, Head of School

Leave of absence request
A Principal can only authorise a leave of absence in exceptional circumstances. We will take into account the Government guidance when considering what the exceptional circumstances are- all applications are considered on a case-by-case basis. You may be able to take your child out of school in exceptional circumstances, providing an application is made in advance by the parent/carer, this request complies with Government guidance and the leave is deemed to be ‘exceptional’ by the Principal.
If you take a leave of absence without our permission or if your child fails to return by the agreed date if permission was granted, then this will be recorded as an unauthorised absence and noted in your child’s record. You might also be issued with a fixed penalty notice for this absence. If your child has not returned within 10 days of the expected date of return then, after consultation with the Local Authority, we may take your child off our school roll.
As examples, the following reasons are not considered to be exceptional circumstances:
- availability of cheap holidays
- periods overlapping with beginning or end of term
- visits to family
- renewing passports

CRA Celebrate Summer Cup Success
The annual DRET Summer Cup took place on Thursday this week, as the most talented athletes from across the David Ross Education Trust travelled to Grantham Meres to compete in an action packed day of Sport. Once described as ‘The biggest Sports Day in the Country’ by Sky Sports News the DRET Summer Cup saw over 1,400 students compete in Athletics (track & field), Swimming, Tennis, Table Tennis and Boccia. The day is also supported by a number of elite athletes who attend the day, with this years VIP star guest Alastair Brownlee headlining a host of athletes which included former CRA student Darcie Proud (pictured with our Table Tennis medallists), who this year was awarded RAF Sportswoman of the year.
The Summer Cup is a fantastic platform for students to showcase their individual talent on the big stage, whilst demonstrating all of our CRA values. CRA took a team of over 50 students to represent the academy across the different sports and celebrated lots of successes.
CRA Table Tennis team (Adam, Jacob, Ruby & Emily) retained the Jarvis Cup and were crowned Summer Cup champions. The team made up of one of our Table Tennis scholars and three school players put on excellent individual performances, with Adam winning Gold, Jacob earning a bronze medal, Ruby finishing in 4th place and Emily in 8th.
Millie in year 10 picked up a gold (Hurdles) and silver (100m) medal on the track. There were also excellent medal finishes in athletics for Deigan (Hurdles), Philip (Hurdles) and Josh (High Jump). Despite not picking up medals there were some fantastic 4th and 5th place performances from a number of students who should be proud of their efforts.
For the first time in years, CRA were represented in the pool where Poppy picked up double gold in both her 50m breaststroke and 50m freestyle events. Archie also celebrated medal success picking up a bronze medal, before Isabella picked up two 4th place finishes.
A big shout out goes to Harrison and Megan who competed in the mixed doubles Tennis event, reaching the semi finals before losing to the eventual winners (Humberston). Harrsion and Megan settled for a fantastic 4th place overall.
Table Tennis
Ryan Holland represented England (and Charles Read Academy) at the British Senior Schools last weekend in Jersey. This was Ryan's first time representing England and his selection came after he had reached the semi-finals of the English Schools U16 individual event and helped Charles Read Academy win the U16 boys English Schools team championships for the second consecutive year.
Ryan played in the U14 boys team event and singles and claimed a gold medal in the team event and a bronze medal in the singles.
This is a fantastic achievement for Ryan, Charles Read Academy and DRET Sport.
