EVANSTON WILDKITS LACROSSE MONTHLY NEWSLETTER | NOVEMBER 2024

ETHS Parents and players - Below you will find information on: Housekeeping, Shout Outs, Fitness Tests and Preparation, Drill of the Month, Monthly Philosophy, What to Watch for, and the parent committee.

Housekeeping:

As you already know we can no longer use Remind for communication. The school is now using talking points. To receive communications from us via the app you need to be registered for the upcoming lacrosse season. You can register HERE. The app is up and running, so let us know if you have any questions. You can also find any updates on kitslacrosse.com.

Now would be a good time to get caught up on Physicals that expire before or in season. Additionally, any student that needs to take the Impact test can do so now as well. Getting this done early will allow us to hit the ground running and limit in-season distractions.

Snap! Raise gear not received from last Season is still available at ETHS in the language center through Coach Strening.

Spring Break “Deal” 3/22-3/29

We will not be taking a trip this year. Here is the rationale.

We are adding some tougher teams earlier on this season. We will not be playing in the Glenbard Tournament. We are anticipating a challenging first quarter then want to give the players a break. That being said, this is not just free time off. We ask that players and families take care of things that could be a possible distraction in-season. Examples are: Hair cuts, family dinners, school projects, catching up on schoolwork, College visits, car repair etc. We will have practices Thursday, Friday and Saturday but they will not be mandatory.

STICK MAINTENANCE:

Bad sticks build bad habits.

Before and after of an actual player's stick. The stick on the left is a bad stick and will build bad habits. The stick on the right will allow you to build confidence and reduce distractions on field.

Get your stick taken care of before the season!

Shout Outs:

This month goes out to the 34 guys that attended the first open gym. It was awesome to see us off to such a strong start especially in the net!

We would also like to acknowledge all of the boys that have been recruiting their friends to try lacrosse this year. It is never too late to start and the more players we have in the program, the more potential we have to succeed! Good work boys, keep recruiting!

Fitness tests and Preparation:

As a reminder, we have implemented 2 fitness tests:

Times - (based on last year’s average and median times. These are passable with effort!)

  • 440 1 - 68 Seconds
  • 5 minute break
  • 440 2 - 76 Seconds
  • 5 minute break
  • 440 3 - 85 Seconds

*Goalies will have to complete the tests but will not have to make the times.

We are still undecided on how to implement both of these, so stay tuned. That being said, you should be able to pass either on day one as a varsity lacrosse player. This is a challenge but not unachievable!

We will be taking precautions to make sure hockey players do not injure themselves with the change in conditioning from skating to running. Please do your part to avoid injury by coming into the spring season prepared to run.

“It's better to have tried and failed than never have tried at all”

Drill of the Month

Backside Exchange Shooting

Small group stick work to help with footwork, stick work, zone busting and "Agent of Chaos" concepts.

This advanced shooting drill focuses on perfecting the backside exchange, a critical offensive movement in lacrosse. The backside exchange serves two primary purposes:

1. It enforces motion to the offense, making it significantly more challenging for defenders to anticipate, react, and guard.

2. It has the potential to change defensive matchups if defenders hold spots on the backside.

Drill Structure:

Two feeding lines - one top center who feeds the player coming out off the crease for time and room and a low wing line who feeds the player cutting in to the crease for inside finish.

Skill Development:

Each repetition of this drill provides players with two distinct shooting scenarios, enhancing their versatility in offensive play. This structure allows athletes to refine both their outside shooting precision and their ability to finish in tight spaces near the goal.

The drill’s design promotes the development of:

• Quick decision-making

• Fluid ball movement

• Accurate shooting under various conditions

By consistently practicing this drill, players will significantly improve their offensive capabilities, particularly in executing and capitalizing on backside exchanges during competitive play.

Rotation:

Start two guys in the drill. A player on crease going out to backside wing for time and room shot, and a player on the backside wing cutting to the crease for a finish inside. Line 1 feeds to cutter then rotates to top center where Line 2 passes to player coming out for T&R shot. Line 2 enters into crease, goes out for a T&R shot, then cuts for finish inside. Ends at line 1 then repeats..”

Philosophy:

WILDKIT OFFENSE PRESENTATION

Please do not be afraid to reach out with any questions on this. The more we ask now, the better prepared we will be for the season.

What to watch for:

Open gym second session schedule.

Parent Committee:

This year we plan to implement a “parent committee” to help us in continuing to build a great culture around in and around the lacrosse program. If you have any interest in getting involved or any ideas on how to help, please reach out!

If you have any questions, comments, or updates on Housekeeping, Shout Outs, Fitness Tests and Preparation, Drill of the Month, Monthly Philosophy, What to Watch for, or the parent committee please feel free to reach out! Your participation in this will only improve the quality of the newsletter and our program’s culture.
