K-State Indigenous Faculty Staff Alliance (IFSA) Land Acknowledgement
As the first land-grant institution established under the 1862 Morrill Act, we acknowledge that the state of Kansas is historically home to many Native nations, including the Kaw, Osage, and Pawnee, among others. Furthermore, Kansas is the current home to four federally recognized Native nations: The Prairie Band Potawatomie, the Kickapoo Tribe of Kansas, the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska, and Sac and Fox Nation of Missouri in Kansas and Nebraska.
Many Native nations utilized the western plains of Kansas as their hunting grounds, and others – such as the Delaware – were moved through this region during Indian removal efforts to make way for White settlers. It’s important to acknowledge this, since the land that serves as the foundation for this institution was, and still is, stolen land.
We remember these truths because K-State’s status as a land-grant institution is a story that exists within ongoing settler-colonialism, and rests on the dispossession of Indigenous peoples and nations from their lands. These truths are often invisible to many. The recognition that K-State’s history begins and continues through Indigenous contexts is essential.

Sumer is icumen in
Summer has arrived, Loudly sing, cuckoo! The seed is growing And the meadow is blooming, And the wood is coming into leaf now, Sing, cuckoo!
The ewe is bleating after her lamb, The cow is lowing after her calf; The bullock is prancing, The billy-goat farting, Sing merrily, cuckoo!
Cuckoo, cuckoo, You sing well, cuckoo, Never stop now.
Mirie it is while sumer ilast
Merry it is while summer lasts with fowl’s song. But now nears the wind’s blast and weather strong.Oh, oh! How this night is long! And I with very much wrongs, sorrow, and mourn and fast.
Flos regalis virginalis
Royal, virginal flower illustrious leader of the choir, who art well known to be descended from the royal offspring of Jesse.
O fragrant rose, O primrose, free Thy servants from all affliction. The king has conducted Thee to the royal wedding room.
O flower of beauty and highly honored balsam, Thou, sunshade and mirror of glory, give Thy servants joy after this exile.
How Merrily We Live
How merrily we live that shepherds be, roundelays still we sing with merry glee. On the pleasant downs where as our flocks we see, we feel no cares, we fear not fortune’s frowns, we have no envy which sweet mirth confounds.
We Be Three Poor Mariners
We be three poor mariners, newly come from the seas; We spend our lives in jeopardy whiles others live at ease. Shall we go dance the round a round, round and shall we go dance the round a round, round? For he that is a bully boy, Come pledge me on the ground.
We care not for those martial men that do our states disdain; but we care for those merchantmen that do our states maintain. Shall we go dance the round a round...
There Were Three Ravens
There were three ravens sat on a tree, Down a down hey down hey down. They were as black as they might be, With a down derry derry derry down down.
Then one of them said to his mate: Down a down hey down hey down. "Where shall we our breakfast take?" With a down derry derry derry down down.
Twa Corbies
‘In behint yon auld fail dyke, I wot there lies a new-slain knight; Naebody kens that he lies there, O But his hawk, his hound, and his lady fair.
O‘His hound is to the hunting gane, His hawk, to fetch the wild-fowl hame, His lady’s ta’en another mate, O, Sae we may mak our dinner sweet.
‘Ye’ll sit on his white hause-bane, And I’ll pike out his bonny blue een. Wi’ mani ae lock o’ his yellow hair, We’ll theek our nest when it grows bare. O, We’ll theek our nest when it grows bare.
‘Mony a ane for him makes mane, But nane shall ken whare he is gane: O’er his white banes, when they are bare, O The wind shall blaw for evermair.’
Gather Your Rosebuds
Gather ye rosebuds while ye may, Old Time is still a-flying: And this same flower that smiles to-day To-morrow will be dying.
The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun, The higher he’s a-getting, The sooner will his race be run, And nearer he’s to setting.
That age is best which is the first, When youth and blood are warmer; But being spent, the worse, and worst Times still succeed the former.
Then be not coy, but use your time, And while ye may, go marry: For having lost but once your prime, You may for ever tarry.
Hail, Immortal Bacchus
Hail, immortal Bacchus, known by they vine-encircled zone, by thy crew that on thee wait, thy rosy crest and reeling gait.
Hither vested like the god with thine ivy wreath and rod. Hither come in jolly pride and o'er thy festive rites preside.
Hail, immortal Bacchus....
