SPRING 2024 PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

President’s Message – Embracing Spring Renewal

Happy Springtime SCAOHN! I don’t know about you, but I was so ready to leave the gloom of winter behind and embrace this new season of resurgence. Allow me to attempt to weave our occupational health nursing journey into the fabric of this beautiful spring season.

Spring is a season of hope, and just like that season, we as occupational nurses also embody that same sort of hope each day in our workplaces.

Our care takes root just like the seeds we plant in the soil of our backyard garden or flower beds. As we assess risks, educate and nurture well-being we are planting seeds of wellness that in turn creates tiny blooms of health in our workplaces. Like the fences around our gardens, we also stand guard each day watching for and abating hazards to help ensure our employees go home as healthy and safe as they were when they arrived for work.

Our empathy and compassion is like a petal unfolding. We listen to concerns, ease anxieties, and offer solace. In our care, employees find refuge from the difficulties of life. May the words we utter be like gentle breezes that carry wellness tips and encouragement. A simple “stay hydrated” or “stretch those muscles” can and does transform lives.

Let’s continue to look for hidden blooms of gratitude in all that we do – things like a smile from a recovered employee or a thank you note from a coworker are truly our spring blossoms that help us know that we truly make a difference even when it may feel like we don’t. We also need to continue to scatter petals of prevention. Vaccines, safety protocols and wellness campaigns do matter! We are not just Occupational Health Nurses, but we are truly guardians of health.

Each of us is like a flower, unique and vital, and together, we form a beautiful bouquet. Let’s celebrate our diversity and continue to collaborate like a spring garden not only in our workplaces but in our nursing association. May the sun warm our hearts, the spring showers cleanse our spirits, and the blossoms we see remind us of the lives we touch.

With Gratitude,

Ashley 😊

Sometimes, what appears to be the perfect answer to a safety question is not as simple as it seems. This article is great in that it goes beyond the mentality of throwing the baby out with the bath water - the solution may be what is needed, but may need modification or training to make it effective.

It's that time of year - temperatures are rising and with the changing of the seasons come increased risks of negative outcomes from heat exposure.

This article Sjoerd Nanninga is an intriguing look into the human psyche. Nanninga, co-founder of safety and continuous improvement software company Unite-X, draws on his education in economics and his experiences in the world of safety to explain how important happiness is to not only productivity, but also to creating a safe working environment. Research consistently supports that helping drive happiness can drive safety. I encourage you to take a few minutes to read this article in the latest online EHS Today magazine to see if there is information you can use to further develop your practice and help your employees improve their quality of life, safety, and production levels.
