Summer Term Highlights 2024

Welcome to the 2024 Summer Term edition of St Hugh's Highlights, giving you an overview of this term's activities!

We were thrilled to be shortlisted in the Independent Schools of the Year Awards 2024 - in the category of Small Independent School of the Year.

We are proud to be recognised in these awards once again, having been shortlisted for Independent Prep School of the Year 2021, Small Independent School of the Year 2022, and Independent School of the Year for Student Wellbeing in 2022 & 2023.

Topics and Trips

Nursery children raised and fed their very own butterflies and were very excited when it came to releasing them into the wild!

They have also enjoyed exploring the village with trips to the woods and park.

They read The Hungry Caterpillar storybook and enjoyed visiting the shop to buy some of the food he enjoyed so they could try it for themselves.

Pre-school has also spent lots of time in the garden. They cleared the raised beds and planted their own sunflowers.

They also released the butterflies they watched grow from caterpillars.

They were lucky enough to harvest lots of strawberries to share at snack time.

We can't believe where the time has gone!

Reception class learnt about new life and were very excited to see Mr Goodhand had brought in some special visitors for a few days before taking them back home.

Everyone chose an animal from the local environment for a dress up day.

Africa was the topic for Years 1 & 2.

They visited Yorkshire Wildlife Park.

They also enjoyed 'Africa Day' in class where they came dressed in suitable attire to learn lots of new skills.

Years 3 & 4 transformed into Vikings when they welcomed Portals to the Past to deliver a workshop.

Year 5 ventured to France and learnt all about French cuisine and history.

Year 6 had a fantastic time on their residential trip.

Year 7 journeyed back in time at the National Civil War Centre.

Year 8 pupils made some amazing memories in Ullswater.

Forest School

We celebrated International Bat Appreciation Day.

Everyone loved learning about echolocation and then created bat mirror paintings.

We even pretended to be bats!

We hunted for minibeasts and created some amazing grid drawings...

We even made suitable homes for the minibeasts we found...

As always, we jumped at the chance to get creative...

...learning the art of Hapazome using flowers we collected.

It is always fun to find ways to use the things we collect in the woods...

We designed and built some amazing boats before testing them out on the water...

We worked together as a team to learn new skills when using a bow drill.

We persevered when it came to lighting our own fire...

...with close, and safe, supervision from our friends!

We could not wait to visit the school pond for a spot of pond dipping.

It was fascinating to learn how to test for water quality.

With the end of the Summer Term upon us we enjoyed a celebration with friends.

Most of all this term, we have enjoyed being in the Great Outdoors!

Music & Drama

Our Speech & Drama Festival saw pupils deliver an incredible range of performances.

From Reception to Year 8, everyone performed brilliantly.

The Middle School production of Peter Pan The Musical was a triumph!

The Forbes Hall was packed to the rafters for each of the three performances.

We already can't wait for the next production!

Our Summer Gala Concert saw our musicians perform together and we said goodbye and good luck to our Year 8 leavers.

Sport

St Hugh's pupils have travelled the country to compete in a range of sports this term. Alongside our weekly local fixture provision we have journeyed as far afield as Cambridge, Norwich, York, Sheffield, Birmingham and London.

Cricket

It has been a fabulous cricket season.

Our U13A Girls' Team travelled to Cambridge to compete in the ECB Indoor Cricket Regional Competition.

Our U12 Team made it through to the County Cup Final which was held at Woodhall Spa Cricket Club. The team performed brilliantly and although they didn't win they should be incredibly proud of reaching the finals.

It was lovely to welcome along families to watch the team play. While Mr Jeffery and Mr Eric kept a close eye on the score, Mrs Cobb and Mrs Yule cooked up a storm on the barbecue!

From our youngest players to our senior team, everyone has come together to learn new skills and develop a love for the game.

We were very excited to see the installation of our new non-turf cricket pitch to complement our exisiting grass pitches.

The project was made possible thanks to collaboration with the England and Wales Cricket Board, Woodhall Spa Cricket Club and Lincolnshire County Cricket.

Golf

Megan and Ellis competed in the Lincolnshire Schools' Golf Competition representing St Hugh's as the youngest team on the day. Well done to Megan who won the girls' competition.

The St Hugh's Golf Cup Challenge is now in its third year. It has been great to see how the standard has improved year on year. Congratulations to Megan who took first place for the second year running.

Tennis

We attended tennis events at St Peter's York and Repton which were fabulous days for our aspiring tennis players.

In our Annual Intra-school Tennis Championships the following pupils were victorious: Fergus V (Senior), Josh N (Intermediate) and Harriet T (Junior).

Swimming

We have been extremely busy in the pool.

Our U11 Swim Team competed at the ESSA Regional Qualifiers at Repton...

...and went on to compete in the ESSA National Finals at Ponds Forge. It was great to see St Hugh's competing on the national stage finishing 11th nationally in the small schools' category.

Charlotte T and Annabelle J travelled to London for the IAPS National Finals. They both put out creditable performances in their respective heats. Annabelle qualified for the final to finish 7th nationally in Under 12 50m butterfly. Charlotte finished 12th in the Under 13 50m backstroke.

Our younger pupils were very excited to welcome family and friends to their swimming galas.

In lessons, we are always learning new skills in the pool - including water survival skills.

Athletics

It has been a busy athletics season with all children working hard to improve their personal best performances in a range of track and field events.

For some, sports day provided the opportunity to experience competitive athletics within school and for others we saw them compete at a local, regional and national level.

Sam H, Amelia F, Jemima S, Charles B, Florence L and Charlotte T reached the National Prep Schools' Athletics Final and competed well.

Florence took a hop, skip and a jump to become National Prep School Champion for U14 Girls' Triple Jump and Long Jump.

In the Coastal and Wolds Superzone Athletics Championships we competed with 16 local schools and WOW what a day we had:

  • 7 records broken by St Hugh's
  • Year 7 Girls - Winners
  • Year 8 Girls - Winners
  • Year 7 Boys - Runners Up

The sun shone for Sports Day...

There were incredible performances...

The Boarding House

The Boarding House has been a hive of activity.

We have made the most of the warm and sunny evenings...

...enjoying trips to the park...

...alfresco snacks and meals...

...playing hide and seek...

...and being together.

The inflatable event night proved as popular as ever...

We enjoyed welcoming new boarders when we held our Year 2 Boarding Taster Night.

A waterfight was the perfect way to end a very hot day in school!

As our Boarding Captains and Years 6 & 8 boarders head off to their new schools we wish them well. You will be missed!

We look forward to welcoming new boarders in September - Mrs Warwick-Smith already has lots of exciting events planned: www.st-hughs.lincs.sch.uk/school-calendar

Goodbyes and Good Lucks!

We say farewell to Anita who has been part of the St Hugh's Team for more years than she will admit!

Enjoy your retirement and being a Grandma. We look forward to seeing you at Nursery drop-offs/picks-ups.

Mrs Revell - we wish you all the very best as you and your family move to Cyprus. You will be greatly missed.

To all our pupils moving on to the next part of their journey, we wish you all the luck in the world.

We know friendships have been made for life.

To all those leaving the St Hugh's family - please keep in touch!

Speech Day

Our Speech Day marked the end of a fantastic year and it was lovely to come together to celebrate our achievements.

Thank you to our guest speaker, Jade Windley (former professional tennis player, athlete mentor, ambassador and tennis coach). Jade is already known to many our pupils who attend tennis lessons in hobby time and outside of school. Her speech was truly inspiring and we think our tennis hobby will be more popular than ever!

Well done to everyone. Be proud of your incredible achievements!

To all our families and friends, have a lovely summer!
