Book and Movie Reviews Bradley Shen and Arjun Srivastava share their unique take on these pieces.

If you would like to watch a movie, full of overcoming challenges when odds are all against you, I would recommend Wonder. The movie centers around a boy named August (Auggie) who happens to have a facial deformity. In the movie, we learn that because of this, Auggie has been homeschooled by his parents his whole life. In his 6th grade year, his parents realize that they can not keep homeschooling him so they make the decision to send him to an actual school. In his school, many people don’t accept him purely for his facial deformity. Throughout the movie, Auggie overcomes bullies and even manages to make friends with his funny personality. The author R.J Palacio perfectly creates a touching movie that shows that kindness is very important in our world. The movie tells us that we should not judge people for their looks. For anyone who wants to watch an inspirational, touching movie that spreads joy and kindness, I would definitely pick Wonder. - Bradley Shen

If you enjoyed Brave by Svetlana Chmakova, then A First Time For Everything by Dan Santat is the book for you. In the Summer before his freshman year in high school, Dan decides to try something new by signing up for a two-week-long tour of Europe through his school. As he explores new places, he has new experiences but also must come to peace with his past. His trip is full of firsts and some (hopefully) lasts. If you are into wholesome teen stories of evolving characters with happy resolutions then I recommend you read this book. As one of those people myself, I loved how the different locations had a key role in the events and how people acted based on their foreign surroundings. Throughout the book, you will find yourself relating to Dan more times than not. His character in its essence is an average agreeable person whose decisions would most likely mirror your own in such circumstances. A First Time For Everything perfectly illustrates the intricate plot to create a beautifully constructed story that will surely have readers laughing and crying but most of all, enjoying the book. - Arjun Srivastava
