Write Around Portland: Summer Reading

A group of our Members took a 10-week writing workshop and will be reading their published work at the Write Around Portland’s Summer Reading and Book Release Party. Join us celebrating our writers and hear them read their work!
The venue is ADA accessible and we can provide TriMet fare to participants who would like to join. Free and open to all.
Volunteer Mixer: Sustainable Volunteer Care
Wed, June 10th, 12:15 - 3 PM
Starlight Apartments (355 NW 6th Ave)
Join us for a practical and supportive training led by Multnomah County’s Older Adult Behavioral Health Initiative. Open to volunteers, this session focuses on sustaining connection while caring for yourself in relationship-based work.
We'll cover:
- Healthy boundaries and de-escalation strategies
- The nervous system’s role in stress, connection, and burnout
- Grounding tools and end-of-shift practices for sustainability
We’ll eat lunch together from 12:15-1PM and then dive into the training from 1-3 PM. Expect a mix of reflection, discussion, and hands-on skill-building you can apply right away. Come connect, learn, and leave with tools to support your community & self!
Save the Date: Wildwood!
Fri, Aug 21st, all day (9 AM to 5 PM)
Wildwood Rec Site in Welches, OR Keep an eye out for your invite (and RSVP form!) arriving mid-June to join us for our annual Mt. Hood excursion on August 21st. The day will include nature hikes, yard games, art, a scavenger hunt, a picnic lunch, and a t-shirt. We’ll be traveling to Wildwood by bus and spending the whole day out there together. Because of this, to join us for our outing, you need to be able to independently manage your own personal hygiene and medication for the day (or invite a personal caretaker to come with you). We’ll have more details with your invitation in the mail.
Maybelle Center Fundraiser Success!
Every year we have one big fundraising event featuring Member stories and experiences from our programming. A huge thank you to all who helped during our filming on-site, who shared their writing and stories, and volunteered to be in the room with us night-of. It was a beautiful evening, and we raised critical funds to keep our programs running!
June Art Class: Portraits
Tue, June 30th, 2-4 PM
Starlight Apts (355 NW 6th Ave) --meet us there!
Let’s get together and learn some basics for portrait painting. We will be working in pen and ink for this lesson and learn how to make small marks to build up your painting. All materials are provided – just bring yourself and wear an outfit you don't mind getting dirty!

At our April Member Forum, you shared your ideas and we’ll bring them to life in our new Community Room mural! The mural will reflect the many memories, relationships, and moments of belonging that make Maybelle Center special. You have the opportunity to help paint the walls and shape this art installation that truly represents our community. Interested in painting? Exact dates & details are still being finalized, so we'll update those who sign-up as dates are finalized.

Ongoing Opportunities
Changes to ongoing opportunities:
- The Community Room will be closed all day Tuesday, June 16th, to support Walk & Roll: Park Picnic Outing
- Maybelle Center will be closed all day Friday, June 19th, 2026 (Juneteenth)
- The Community Room will close early on Friday, June 5th, at 1 PM to support Karaoke Party in that space
Ongoing opportunities details:
- Community Room: Monday, 1–3 PM; Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays: 10:30 AM - 2:30 PM.
- Choir: Mondays 3-4:30 PM in the Classroom. Come sing with us, regardless of your past choir experience (or complete lack there of)!
- CareOregon Advantage Q&A: 2nd Tuesday of the Month, 10:30 AM - Noon in the Community Room. Reps from Care Oregon will answer your questions on aging, disability, and Medicare. (June date: 6/9)
- Karaoke: In 2026, we will have seasonal karaoke parties, instead of 2x/month in the Community Room. Next karaoke party date forthcoming.
- Heart Circles: Every Thursday, 11:15 AM in the Classroom. A safer space for folks to speak from their hearts, to be heard, and to listen. This will be a combined group in place of Men’s, Women’s, and Rainbow Group, facilitated by a staff member.
- Movie and Popcorn: Every Thursday 12:30 - 2:30 PM in the Community Room. Grab a bowl of popcorn and enjoy a classic film or new blockbuster together. Going forward, we won't have Movie and Popcorn on the day we have Birthday Party.
- Birthday Party: Usually the fourth Thursday of the Month, 1:30 - 2:30 PM. A monthly celebration of member birthdays with cake (gluten-free and sugar-free available) and live music. (June date: 6/25)
- Bingo: Every Friday, 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM in the Community Room. Join us for some friendly competition and get ready to shout "Bingo!"
- Knitting & Crochet: First, third, and fifth Fridays of the month from 12:30 - 2:30 PM in the Community Room. Tools, materials, and instruction will be available to make with us!
- Game Time Social: Second and fourth Fridays of the month from 12:30 - 2:30 PM, stop by the Community Room for a board or card game with fellow Members, volunteers, or staff.
- Monthly Art Class: The last Tuesday of the month, join us for a new art class hosted in the Starlight Apartments space. (June date: 6/30 for portrait work)
- Monthly Arts & Culture Outing: Join us for a group outing to take in some of Portland's extensive arts and culture. (No June outing, but join us for our Community Park Picnic on Tuesday, June 16th at 10 AM)
- Member Forum: Quarterly, 12:45 AM - 2:30 PM in the Community Room. Join us each quarter to brainstorm new ideas, discuss any concerns, and eat lunch together. (Next meeting date TBD)
- Theatre Class: Theatre is on Thursdays from 2:45 - 4:15 PM in the Community Room. No experience needed, join us!
