Project Background

In 2023, Travis County voters approved Bond Proposition A for $233M for safety improvements including roadway capacity and active transportation. Travis County is now moving forward with projects that were identified as priority projects by the Citizen’s Bond Advisory Committee (CBAC), in partnership with County staff and Commissioners Court.

Project Overview

Travis County has allocated $38.5M from the Prop A Bond Package for the planning, design, and construction of the proposed improvements to Cameron Road East of SH 130 from Pecan Street to Fuchs Grove Road. These improvements are needed to address increasing traffic demands, enhance safety, and improve east-west mobility in the rapidly growing area.

Proposed improvements include:

  • Widening Cameron Road to a 4-lane roadway with 2 lanes in each direction and a raised median
  • Adding shoulders on each side of the roadway
  • Adding a shared-use path on one side of the roadway

These improvements will also improve safety needs due to the heavily developing residential communities and access to 1849 Park.

What’s Happening Now?

Before design begins, Travis County is developing a Preliminary Engineering Report to better understand potential construction cost and timeline, and to determine specifics for the proposed improvements, such as the width of the shoulders and shared-use path.

Recent inflation costs have impacted infrastructure projects all over the country. Developing a Preliminary Engineering Report will help the County develop an approach for the design and construction of improvements that will align with allocated funding for the project.

The project team expects the Preliminary Engineering Report to be completed late 2025 with detailed design to expected to begin early 2026. More information about the construction timeline will be provided as the design moves forward.

Next Steps

Once the Preliminary Engineering Report is complete, the project team will begin preliminary design. Additional community engagement and comment opportunities will be made available as the project moves forward.
