Fairytale Beginnings Nursery, Spring Term, Week 1

We have loved welcoming the children back after the holidays as we begin a new year together. This week has been all about settling back into routines, reconnecting with friends, and enjoying learning in a happy, relaxed way. Our new key story, The Three Little Pigs, has already captured the children’s interest and will be our focus for the next two weeks.

We began the week by listening to the story, acting it out using real items and props, and becoming familiar with some of the repeated phrases, including “I’ll huff and I’ll puff…”. We even danced like the wolf as he huffed and puffed, before drawing spiral wind shapes — a fun activity that also helped develop our early pre-writing skills.

We also had a go at painting with the wind, using straws to blow paint across the page — a hands-on way to explore and deepen our understanding of the vocabulary from the story.

Soft toys have been a lovely way for the children to retell the story through their play, supporting their confidence and storytelling skills.

In maths we used the toys to practice words like 'on', 'under', 'next to' and 'behind'.

Although it’s been a short week, we are very excited to continue exploring a range of fairytale stories this half term. You can support this at home by sharing your favourite traditional tales, and we would love to hear about any stories from your families' culture that you’d like us to enjoy together in class.
