Alessia's Milestone Project Alessia Valdes

Perfect Job

In the future, I am hoping to be a physician, specifically a dermatologist-the "perfect job" for me. Luckily, I happen to be a patient of an individual who is a Board Certified Dermatologist, Dr. Ruchi Bhandari. I am choosing Dr. Bhandari as my muse for this research project and will be using her as the basis for my research because she not only embodies who I want to be inside of the clinic but also outside of the clinic. Dr. Bhandari is motivating, driven, and so encouraging to young-aspiring positions like myself. Additionally, she does her job very well-with appoints being booked out months in advance and lasting patient-doctor friendships. She not only inspires me because she is a dermatologist but because she models the physician character I aspire to have.

Dr. Bhandari works here in San Antonio, Texas in a Private Practice Clinic in the Stone Oak Medical Center. She works under Dr. Bucay who owns Bucay Dermatology and Aesthetics-the practice they both head up. Their office is found on the first floor of a building which holds various doctors offices and various health-related professional offices.

As mentioned previously, Dr. Ruchi Bhandari is a Board Certified Dermatologist who completed and earned her MD, PhD, and FAAD. On her social media presence she loves to refer to herself as the Plant Based Physician since she is vegan!

Dr. Bhandari was born in India to parents who immigrated to the United States and from a young age she knew that she wanted to be a physician. Growing up in Staten Island, New York she received her MD/PhD from the SUNY Downstate Medical School on a full ride. She was one of 2 students to be selected for this both limited and sought-after opportunity. She met her husband here who is a current anesthesiologist and the couple now have two children.

Perfect Location

Ideally, I would love to reside and practice in the Northeast of the United States, in states such as Maine, Massachusetts, and/or Connecticut. I am drawn to these specific locations due to their climate-which is very important for me since I am hot-natured so cool weather sounds like a dream. I also love walkable cities, so a city like Boston is my number one choice by far. After visiting Boston once in my life, I immediately fell in love and knew that I wanted to be back and never leave again. There is something about the city being mobile by train, boats in the nearby dock, or biking through-you can get where you need to be without having to commute on a highway.

Boston, MA

Coming from living in Texas my whole life where 100+ degree summers are nothing I am not familiar with, the climate in Boston truly draws me in... Who wouldn't be attracted to Boston's Climate Chart which states ~82 degrees fahrenheit as their maximum temperature in the summer. Additionally, Boston is no stranger to generous amounts of rainstorms and snow which is distributed throughout the year, respectively-which I love. These environmental conditions make living in Boston a pleasant option for me.

Boston is home to many practicing Dermatologists, practices, and hospitals with dermatology units. After researching, there are a multitude of practices scattered throughout the city and neighboring areas which means it is pretty safe to say that dermatologists are not scarce in the area and that the job already exists in my location-Boston. In other light, having all of these different locations for dermatology allows for numerous possibilities for work when out residency and ready to get the journey started!

Personal Statement

Growing up, and even now still, I struggled with severe cystic and hormonal acne. I can say that the emotional and physical toll it takes on a person is no joke-especially during formative years of ones youth when you are figuring out who you want to be in the world. Having to worry about what was going on on the surface and beneath the layers of my skin left me with little to no self confidence... However, once receiving support from my Dermatologist, Dr. Bhandari, my self-image has improved and I feel more comfortable in my skin. I knew I always wanted to go into healthcare due to my mom being a physician associate and my father being a pharmaceutical representative-but I truly felt a tremendous impact during this experience and decided I wanted to have that same impact with others in medicine. I am pursuing this career in medicine in hopes of practicing dermatology because I would love to assist my patients in improving both their physical and mental health hand-in-hand. I feel that because of my empathetic nature, ability to listen and communicate effectively with multiple modes of conversation with individuals, and true passion for healthcare I would be successful in my dream job. Additionally, medicine will entail life-long learning which is something I truly value and am so adamant about pursuing in my career. In order to achieve my dream job and get to where I want to be-I will need to continue to work hard and remind myself about why I am doing this and why I want to keep going. I need to take my schooling seriously, seek out opportunities that will allow me to familiarize myself with the environment, and make connections that will allow for me to receive mentorship, encouragement, and support!
