Announcements

Welcome new students, residents, fellows, faculty and staff! If you would like a tour of the Simulation Center, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at csc@ecu.edu.

We welcome Dr. Afrah Ali as the new Associate Dean of Clinical Simulation! She brings a wealth of experience to our program. She is also a Clinical Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Jennifer Bennett transitioned her role from the Medical Director of the Office of Clinical Simulation to Medical Director of Office of Clinical Skills Assessment and Education. On behalf of the Simulation Center, we wish her the best in her new position!

Healthcare Simulation Week is Sept. 15-19, 2025. This week celebrates all health care professionals who use simulation to improve safety, effectiveness, and efficiency of health care delivery. The BSOM Simulation Center thanks all of our supporters who have helped us grow into the nationally-recognized program it is today.

Simulation Stars

We at the Simulation Center give our appreciation to Dr. Ashley Lutrick, Associate Medical Director of EastCare, for her dedication to high-quality training for EastCare staff.

Congratulations to Jessica Cringan of the Simulation Center for being elected Chair of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare Low-Cost Low-Resource Interest Group. Her innovation and expertise has led her to achieve this national recognition!

Special thanks to Chuck Strickland and Stephanie Seals from ECU Health Emergency Management for planning a simulation training day at the BSOM Simulation Ceneter for the NC State Highway Patrol. The program was such a success, we plan to repeat the session later this fall!

Program Activity

New residents from Emergency Medicine completed an onboarding bootcamp that included skills and high-fidelity scenarios focusing on critically ill patients.

Emergency Medicine residents practice intubation skills on a task trainer.

Residents from Family Medicine, Pediatrics, Surgery, Critical Care, Internal Medicine, and Emergency Medicine completed their Central Venous Line Course at the Simulation Center.

Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellows trained in various bootcamp sessions such as Vent Management, Mega Code Simulation, Ultrasound/Bronch VR, and airway management.

P&CCM Fellows practice on how to insert a transvenous pacer on a simulator.

ECU Health EastCare continues to use the BSOM Simulation Center for high-stakes performance assessment and continuing education for staff.

Brody M2 students started their Physical Diagnosis Rotations skills sessions, which includes learning different injection techniques and basics of suturing.

Brody M1 students completed their Basic Lifesaver course (BLS) at the Simulation Center with the assistance of Brody and ECU Health facilitators.

The Clinical Simulation Center team gave Brody M1 students an overview of the various simulation equipment and learning resources for their Intro to Simulation course.

School of Dental Medicine residents trained in First 5 Minutes® and IV access at the Simulation Center.

ECU Health Trauma held Advanced Trauma Life Support classes for new providers.

Emergency Medicine/Internal Medicine continue to hold a monthly conference at the Simulation Center where they practice high-acuity skills and scenarios.

Physician Assistant Studies students utilized the BSOM Simulation Center for BLS, high-fidelity scenarios, and training with slit lamp and ocular ultrasound.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol held a day of continuing education at the BSOM Simulation Center for the emergency personnel serving throughout the state.

Expanding the Field

The Health care Simulation Unit (HSU) conducted pediatric trauma simulations at Carteret Health, Craven Medical, and UNC Nash.

The Clinical Simulation staff gave demonstrations of a high-fidelity manikin and a hands-on session on opioid overdose recognition and response at the Eastern AHEC Health Sciences Academy College Fair.

Future doctors Devika Ghosh and Maya Parker who joined us at the Simulation Center for their summer immersion program presented their posters at the Medical Student Scholarship Forum.

Maya Parker, M2 student, presented her project, "Design and Implementation of Hybrid Approach to Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Education in UME: An Exploratory Study".
Devika Ghosh, M2 student, presented her project, "Something Fishy: Exploring role relations via an Interprofessional Education event with M1 and BSN students".

Medical students Hunter Geneau and Myra Waheed have reimplemented the Heart Murmur research project to assess how simulation resources assist students in studying for their STEP exams.
