Assemblyman Gallahan Visits Otselic Valley

Classroom Conversations, Agriculture Education, and Discussions about Rural Education Highlighted the Day

Otselic Valley Central School was honored to welcome New York State Assemblyman Jeff Gallahan (131st District) and Chief of Staff Alexis Ogra on Monday, October 27th, 2025. Their visit offered a meaningful look into the learning opportunities, programs, and partnerships that shape Otselic Valley Central School. The visit began in Mrs. Jenny Osowski’s Participation in Government class, where students led a thoughtful discussion on issues important to them. Topics ranged from transportation and forestry to the rising costs of medication, statewide cell phone regulations, and college affordability. Assemblyman Gallahan responded to each question, emphasizing the importance of civic participation and reminding students that their perspectives matter in shaping their communities.

From there, the Assemblyman toured the school building, stopping at the shared library, a space that serves both the school and the wider community. He explored the library’s makerspace and STEAM activities and learned how the space supports students during the school day and families after hours.

In the Agricultural Education classroom, Assemblyman Gallahan met with teacher Andrea Lehmann to discuss the impact of agriculture and FFA programs in rural schools. Instructor Andrea Lehmann shared her experiences and recent accomplishments, including the chapter’s National FFA “Living to Serve” grant, which supports service-learning projects that strengthen connections between OV’s FFA chapter and the local community.

The visit concluded with a conversation between Assemblyman Gallahan, Board of Education President Dave Cruikshank, Board Member Juliette Wentworth, and Superintendent Brian Collier. They discussed the strengths and challenges of rural education, workforce readiness, and the vital role schools play as centers of small communities. The conversation highlighted how collaboration between schools and policymakers can help support student success and community vitality.

Otselic Valley is grateful to Assemblyman Gallahan and Chief of Staff Ogra for taking the time to learn more about our programs, meet with students, and engage in meaningful dialogue about the future of rural education.
