From the Directors, Ms. Abdilla and Ms. Gold:

Fall marks a particularly vibrant season for BTI, as students and staff come together for traditions like SlimeTime, Pie Feast, and Study Night. The semester has also featured rich team-based learning, including Frankenstein mock trials, beverage innovation, and sophomore and junior cross-curricular projects that will be showcased at Open House. Juniors have also begun their mentorships. Together, these experiences reflect the collaboration and curiosity at the heart of the program. As we head into the holiday season, we are grateful for the many individuals who make BTI possible. We extend our sincere thanks to our parent volunteers, mentors, symposium speakers, and industry partners who generously share their time and expertise with our students. We are also deeply appreciative of the Carlmont Academic Foundation for its continued support, and to all who contributed to Giving Day and throughout the semester. Thanks to this generosity, BTI has raised $34,000—nearly 70% of our annual goal—helping ensure these exceptional opportunities continue. We wish you all a happy holiday season and look forward to connecting with you in 2026.

welcoming another BTI baby!

We are delighted to share that Ms. Moynihan and Coach Chris welcomed a healthy baby girl last month. Warmest congratulations to them on this wonderful new chapter. Ms. Moynihan will return in the spring. In the meantime, Mr. Bauer is doing a terrific job taking care of her classes.

We love hearing from our BTI alumni!

Paige Crowther

BTI Class of 2025

Paige, far left, and friends

Hi BTI community! I’m Paige, a recent grad now in my first year at Wellesley studying biochemistry with potential minors in music and French. Going to a liberal arts school has let me dive into pre-med while still exploring the connections between disciplines which is something I loved about BTI. Another thing I appreciated most was the curiosity that everyone shared, and it’s something that I’m grateful to have found again at Wellesley. High school definitely had its ups and downs, but I’ve gained a new perspective on learning and life beyond the Bay Area bubble. College is challenging in a good way: it pushes me to really understand things, not just study for a grade. I am also learning that the routes to success, whatever that may mean to you, are a lot more flexible and open-ended than they once seemed. Wherever you end up, I hope you keep chasing what you care about and remember there’s more to it than just checking boxes.

senior field trip to genentech

We are deeply grateful to the BTI/Carlmont parents, past and present, who work at Genentech and organized an exceptional day for our juniors: Sejal Mehta Karen Grinker Kristin Bish Trevor Swartz Tianbo Li Special thanks as well to Reina Fuji of Genentech for her support.  From the facility and lab tours to the interactive stations, presentations, demonstrations, and lunchtime conversations, every experience was thoughtfully designed to engage and inspire our students. Thank you to these parents for being such generous hosts!

Kicking off the junior mentor program

The BTI Mentor Program for juniors is a highly meaningful professional development experience that connects students with professionals aligned to their prospective career interests. Through the exceptional efforts of Oscar Fabic, BTI Mentor Coordinator, each of our 54 BTI juniors is matched with a mentor in a relevant field. The seven-month program launches each fall with the Meet Your Mentor Breakfast, marking the beginning of a sustained, real-world learning partnership.  We extend our sincere thanks to Mr. Fabic for securing outstanding mentors for every junior and to Ms. Moynihan for seamlessly integrating mentor program activities into her coursework. We are also deeply grateful to the mentors who generously volunteer their time, expertise, and a job shadow opportunity to support our students’ growth. On November 7, the room buzzed with energy as mentors and mentees met for the first time.

Career pitches

A few weeks after meeting their mentors, students interviewed them about their professional journeys and identified a key insight to share. This became the centerpiece for an elevator pitch students delivered in their U.S. History class. A panel of mentors evaluated the presentations on essential skills such as clarity, eye contact, and vocal presence. This assignment reflects BTI’s commitment to giving students opportunities to present to authentic audiences beyond their teachers and peers.

Many thanks to the mentors who generously volunteered to serve on the evaluation panels:

Slime Time

BTI students and staff had a SPOOKTACULAR time making SLIME the week before Halloween. Ingredients mixed in a colored chalice with a bone from a tree:

  • 100 ml of hydrated mummy bones
  • 40 ml of elixir rigor mortis
  • A few drops of Essence of Halloween: bats blood, newt breath, dragon tears, or spider eggs

The 58 pounds of candy added to the fun!

pie Feast Perseveres!

Even a water main break and a last-minute school closure couldn’t stop BTI from coming together. What was planned as a lunchtime Pie Feast quickly became an impromptu pie-for-breakfast celebration—and it turns out pie may be even more popular in the morning. The Pie Feast tradition once again gave students and staff a chance to gather, connect, and enjoy a little sweetness together, proving that BTI community spirit thrives even under unexpected circumstances.

Ms. Abdilla considering the unthinkable: What? No Pie Feast?!
From frowns to fizz—Martinelli's that is!
Proof that word travels fast when there’s pie.
Mr. Stu gives an administrative stamp of approval! :)

Study night

Studying for finals isn’t so bad when you’re in good company and have pizza and great snacks for fuel! About 50 students showed up for Study Night, and all of the BTI teachers, too.
