We have a new mural!

A collaboration with local Arakwal artist Nikolla Clark

Be sure to check out our beautiful new mural next time you enter our school!

As part of our NAIDOC Day celebrations last Friday, students had the amazing opportunity to collaborate with local Arakwal artist Nikolla Clark in creating a mural that reflects our deep connection to the sea beside our school.

Nikolla’s powerful vision brings to life the Arakwal people's enduring relationship with land and water, reminding us of the importance of Country and culture.
You can see this beautiful piece of community art on the wall of our school hall — it’s a lasting tribute to connection, collaboration, and culture.

Thank you to all the students who helped paint this mural for our school community to enjoy.

Byron Writers Festival

Secondary Schools Day inspires young writers!

On Thursday 7 August, a group of 35 students from Byron Bay High School, accompanied by Ms Hulbert and Mr O’Brien, attended the Byron Writers Festival Secondary Schools Day excursion at the Bangalow Showground.

Students had the opportunity to attend fascinating presentations from authors such as fantasy author Isobelle Carmody, crime writing specialist Michael Robotham, best selling author Markus Zusak (The Book Thief), deadly scientist Corey Tutt, as well as, celebrated authors Anita Heiss (Dirrayawadha), Sarah Armstrong (Run), Santilla Chingaipe (Black Convicts), and poet Maxine Beneba Clarke (Stuff I’m Not Sorry For).

Students were also able to peruse a range of intriguing reading material from the Book Room Collective, and have their books signed by the authors themselves.

A great day was had by all! Our students were able to gain some deep insight into the perspectives and methods of professional writers, who had some great tips for helping these budding young authors to develop their own writing skills.

NSW Public Schools State Choir 2025

Eva performs at the Sydney Opera House

Congratulations to Eva W-S who performed in the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House on both Monday and Tuesday nights of last week as part of The Festival of Choral Music. Eva was one of 50 high school students who sang with the NSW Public Schools State Choir for 2025.

The State Choir performed 4 songs over the 2 nights, conducted by 2 Public High School teachers.

The exceptional quality of the performances reflected the collaboration and dedication of all students who challenged themselves in learning and performing the chosen repertoire.

Surround Sound Workshop

Zephyr and Kai participate in a workshop with industry professionals

Last Wednesday, the NSW Department of Education's The Arts Unit visited Byron Bay High School as part of the Surround Sound program.

As reported last week, our very own Wild Rocket — Zephyr P B (guitar and vocals) and Kai A (drums and backing vocals) — will feature in this year’s Spec Fest, performing a 15-minute set of all-original music. They’ll take the stage on a massive 12-metre festival platform at the School Spectacular in Sydney, on Friday 28 and Saturday 29 November.

In preparation for their performance, Zephyr and Kai participated in a 4-hour workshop led by industry professionals Pete Skelton and Kate Maree Hoolihan. The session focused on developing their songwriting, stagecraft, vocal skills, and instrumental techniques.

Two members of the Grannie Smyths, Ahlia B and Marley P, also joined Wild Rocket for the workshop, gaining valuable insight into professional mentoring in the music industry.

A huge thank you goes to our Principal, Janine Marcus for her ongoing support of the Arts at BBHS.

Well done, Kai and Zephyr! Rock On...

Girls FNC Futsal Gala Day

On Tuesday 12 August, I had the privilege of taking our Byron Bay High School Girls' U14s and U16s Futsal teams to Ballina to compete in the FNC Gala Day. It was a fantastic day of skill, sportsmanship, and school spirit.

BBHS U14s Team are the FNC Champions!

Our U14s team had a phenomenal day on the court:

  • Game 1 - Byron Bay HS vs Banora Point HS: 6–0 win
  • Game 2 - Byron Bay HS vs Ballina Coast HS: 6–4 win
  • FNC Final - Byron Bay HS vs Tweed Heads HS: 4–0 win
The girls played exceptionally well throughout the day, showcasing excellent teamwork, determination, and sportsmanship.

Special mentions go to Senna H (Year 8), who was dynamic across the court, and Evelyn B (Year 7), our goalie extraordinaire, whose performance in the goal was outstanding. That being said, every player contributed strongly to the team’s success!

Congratulations to Byron Bay High School who are now 2025 FNC U14 Girls Futsal Champions!

BBHS U16s Team – A Strong Showing

The U16s Girls came up against some tough competition in their first match:

  • Game 1 - Byron Bay HS vs Mullumbimby HS: 1–2 loss
  • Games 2 and 3 - consolation matches against Wollumbin HS and Ballina HS

The girls played with fantastic skill and cohesion, but were narrowly defeated in the final 30 seconds by the eventual winners of the day. Despite the result, their effort and teamwork were evident throughout the game. A standout performance came from Polly J (Year 11), who led the team with determination and flair.

Well done to all our players – you represented Byron Bay High School with pride!
