CONCEPT
PROJECT CONCEPT
Nak is a fragrance brand that aims to bring style and uniqueness to perfume. It wishes to bring a fresh wave of street-style fashioned scents, allowing individuals to express their distinctive personalities. I want to provide something that isn’t for everyone, but for someone who wants a fragrance brand that could represent their style, taste and who they are. I am mainly inspired by street fashion brands such as Stussy and The Bathing Ape. Their successful branding elevates the style of their products creating more depth for those who look towards their brand. I want to create not just a perfume, but a brand that could express its design style, transferring it over to its wearer. I was also inspired by perfume brands who creates experimental designs that diverts from that of the average market. I wanted to express part of my own personality and taste to the brand, and answering the question of, "was there a perfume brand that could express my personality".
PROJECT STATEMENT
The project is to create a perfume brand that is tailored towards individuals who are looking for a unique stylish perfume. It aims to bring a fresh take on fragrance to the market through it's unique design and branding. The key objectives to the project is to produce quality imagery and visual designs that expresses brand's aesthetics.
The project will be complete across the span of 5 weeks completing tasks by the weekly deadline. Tasks will be placed in priority based on its difficulty and importance, where tasks that require more in depth research will be placed in priority and be completed first. One of the biggest priorities of the project was the perfume bottle design, which requires the learning of a 3D software. It is also important because it is the central product to the brand and only when it is created that the rest of the brand can be formed. Along with the perfume bottle is the packaging where I have more opportunity to add more visual interest to the product and the brand. More low priority aspects were the print designs, where I will create a brand zine and promotional posters. As I had the skillsets to create these works in a more constrained time frame, these will be placed later in the weeks so I can focus solely on the 3D modelling. The final deliverables includes the social media account, and merchandise. These were placed in the final stages of the project as they were able to be created fairly short time frame and because I needed to have all the brand design elements to be able to create these designs.
Key deliverables include, branding, perfume bottle design, packaging design, brand zine, promotional posters, Instagram account, and merchandise. Key milestones in the project would be, by week 8, the perfume design and packaging design should be competed to an adequate extent and nearing finalisation. By week 10 all the print designs and products should be finalised and be ready for mockups. By week 11 I will have completed the showreel and Behance page and be ready for assignment submission. Major constraints within the project is my lack of skills with 3D modelling softwares, as it creates limitations on the type of designs and it's intricacy. I will have to create designs that is visually appealing at my skill level, while not compromising on it's quality.

She likes to go shopping with her friends during her free time and look for new places for her to explore. Her hobbies include listening to music, shopping, makeup and dancing.
BRANDING PROCESS
As I had already designed a logo for assignment 1 which I was happy with, I needed to choose the colour palette, typography and pattern design. For the font of the brand I chose the font "Fieldwork", where the shape of the letters where quite modern and unique which suited my brand. I also used the same font with the logotype of the brand as I wanted the aesthetics to match.
The main colour palette is black, white, ultramarine, pink and grey. The pink and the blue are the accent colours which I will use as the lighting and as highlights in my print designs. As they are quite saturated vivid colours, I didn't want to overuse them as it can be uncomfortable for the eye. The other main colours are monochromatic colours which would be the colours mostly used for the brand.
The brand pattern is a very simple design, which is a repeat of the brand logo. This would be used in print designs, marketing materials and potential packaging papers.
And for the the brand I created a unique shape that replicates the shape of the perfume bottle. I created this element following the feedback I received from an industry professional where it was mentioned that the shape of the perfume was quite unique and could be shown visually to represent the brand.
The font I chose was 'Fieldwork', which is a font that uses subtle unique elements that makes it feel more fun and interesting. It's not too overbearing or too boring which I though was perfect for the brand.
BLENDER LEARNING
BLENDER LEARNING
As I had decided to use blender to design the perfumes and packaging design, I had to learn the program from scratch. I was quite worried about this process so I set extra time for myself in the initial stages to learn this new skill.
I followed a tutorial series on Youtube where you made donuts. The program was quite easier to use than expected, as making the model of the donut was quite straightforward. I was able to tackle through issues that I faced in the program through online research and self learning, which I thought was a good experimental process.
I first made the donut bread, colouring it and shaping it with different tools. Then making the icing on top by duplicating the donut bread and reshaping it. Then colouring it to pink to make it more like an icing.
Then the icing was made where firstly I made each of the different variations of the sprinkles, short, medium, long and bent. Then applying it too the donut, adjusting the amount and spread. The colour and texture of the sprinkles are also applied.
I think the end result is quite good as I have followed all the steps of the tutorial. I also think that I learned enough basic skills to be able to make my perfume models and apply textures and colours to them.
PERFUME DESIGN
Design Process
Software used: Blender
For the design of the perfume I considered multiple kinds of designs and shapes for the bottles. I also had to make sure the perfume design was produced quite fast so that I had enough time to create the packaging design.
I first tested different shapes and sizes within blender, taking inspiration from the perfume research and sketches from assignment 1.
Then after confirming the design that I liked I added extra details such as the inner bottle containing the liquid and making the bottom of the lid flat shaped.
Then to prepare the scene I created a back drop like in fashion shoots to create a background.
Then adding platforms to make the scene seem more realistic and adding a minimalistic touch.
Adding the texture to the bottle then the logo. Where i tested several different textures to see different combinations of colours and materials. For the body I wanted a clear glass, while for the lid I wanted different materials and textures that was unique.
Then I made different layouts and compositions with the perfumes, having single products shots and group shots so I had contents to use throughout the project.
I think that the perfume bottled turned out quite good. It was the first design I created on my own with blender which I thought was a fun and insightful process. I am satisfied with the final design as it is quite minimalistic and unique, where I think I tried my best within the framework of my abilities.
PACKAGING DESIGN
Initially I started to do research on different packaging designs and saw that I didn't want to go too overboard as it might overshadow the product. I researched into the different packaging types for perfume and cosmetic bottles where I didn't want a ordinary box design as that didn't suit the brand's mood and identity. It also shouldn't be too elaborate, being a minimalistic unique design that has a flair to it.
Design Process
Softwares used: Blender, Photoshop.
After brainstorming I decided that I wanted to do a horizontal sliding box design like in the inspiration image as I thought it fit the brand image. I also wanted to incorporate the broken off styrofoam texture in the box to hold the perfume, as I liked it's roughness and uniqueness.
I firstly made the shapes of the boxes and adjusted the the shapes and angles of the cut out in front of the inner box.
Then I shaped the styrofoam, where I had had to sculpt and work with it quite a big to make it look more natural. This process was quite difficult as I didn't have the skillsets to create a good styrofoam texture even after research. But I used a clay sculpting tool which I think was to the best of my ability.
Then I imported the perfume bottle shape to resize and fit the packaging.
After the shape looked right I combined the parts so I can start to texture everthing.
Then I needed a packaging design for the box, where I firstly exported the box's layout.
Then I created the design within photoshop, where I wanted to have the grainy texture on here as well, and have the brand shape as well. I looked at the colour palette and tested different colour combinations to put together.
Then it was exported as png and placed as image texture on the shape. I also added a thick card texture on the inner box and the dark grey styrofoam texture.
After all the designs are finalised I created the photoshoot scene like the perfume bottle. For consistency I also used platforms but cylinders and testing different layouts. As this was later in the project I was a bit better in framing the shots and composition so i was able to get quite good shots that I am satisfied with.
I think that the packaging turned out quite good, though I think I could have done better and added more elements if I had more time.
User Feedback:
They liked the grainy textures and how it feels very cohesive with the brand. I might also experiment with adding more graphic elements on the packaging which I wasn't able to do due to time restraints.
POSTER DESIGN
Softwares used: Photoshop
I designed a series of promotional posters for the brand where they will be displayed either in stores, streets or in magazines. I wanted these posters to be textured and unique, incorporating different design aspects of the brand. I looked at inspirational imagery of posters that used unconventional designs and textures. Using colours and layout creatively which I wanted to adapt within my posters.
POSTER 1 DESIGN
I firstly started with researching poster and page designs that could inspire me. I looked into unique designs that use bold colours and unique, playful layouts that stands out.
I first started to consider elements that I would use throughout my posters. I wanted to use by brand logo, brand name, and flowers to imply that the brand has to do with scent. I also needed to be careful with out I display these elements such as flowers as it could potentially make the poster feel overly elegant and generic.
I firstly started with an stock image I found of minimalistic architecture which I though had the perfect mixture of elegance and trendiness that was perfect for the brand. I started to test different layouts and scales for the poster, where I found that placing the logo quite big drew attention and had visual interest because of the shape.
For the flower, I firstly add the grainy texture to it, then create a copy of it and change the overlay setting so it creates a blurry effect that was unique and added a flair to the flower.
I found that if I try to fill the background completely with the image it didn't feel right in terms of visual weight, therefore I needed additional elements and see how I could incorporate the brand colour palette cohesively into the poster.
I created a copy of the background and changed it's hue and saturation then placing it behind the logo, while changing the image setting to overlay/soft light. so it blends in. Then in the remainder space I attempted to fill it with black but it felt too heavy and decreased the uniqueness of the design.
Therefore I decided that I would remove the image from behind the logo and use it to fill in the space rather than making it all black. I think this was a good measure that increased visual interest and balance.
Then finally i placed the brand's main shape in front of the logo to link the poster back to the brand and making it clear what the product is.
POSTER 2 DESIGN
For the second poster design I used the image I found on a stock website as I thought that she embodied the aesthetics of the brand and how I envisioned the model of the brand would be.
As it's colour palettes didn't match the brand's I adjusted the hue and saturation to make it suite the brand a bit more and add the grainy texture.
Then for the floral element, I tested different flowers but found that the daisy flower overlayed very nicely on top of the figure.
Then I added the brand logo and logotype, where I changed the overlay setting for the logo so it created a good greyscale contrast with the colours.
But after feedback from fellow peers and an industry professional I found that I needed it to be in the same colour palette as the other posters and be coherent with the rest of the brand. I added the pink overlay from the colour palette, which I liked the monochrome aesthetics.
Then I added the brand shape in the middle as a coherent brand point.
POSTER 3 DESIGN
As I liked how the minimalistic architecture image worked in the first poster, I found a image that was similar in aesthetics to use.
Then I added a saturated overlay and the logo on top.
Then adding in the logo and a blurb text on top.
For the floral element I used a poppy which had good composition. It was quite difficult to find good images for flowers as they should be too elegant and should have a good balance of flower to stem. I didn't want there to be too much flowers but just enough that it becomes a statement piece on the page. I did the same effect as the first poster with the duplicate and overlay.
Then I added the brand shape to it with a saturated colour and changing the overlay effect.
I quite like how this poster turned out, where it is definitely more colourful than the other posters but still fits with the brand aesthetics.
POSTER 4 DESIGN
The base for this design was actually from the first poster design as i was testing out different layouts and combinations I found this particular layout quite interesting which I thought I could base other posters off from.
For this poster I started with the pink from the colour palette but in a more shaded tone so it wasn't overbearing for the eyes.
Then using the image element from the first poster on top of it with the black box as the visual anchor.
For the floral element I used this yellow flower which I thought formed a good contrast with the pink background.
Then adding the brand name at the bottom.
I quite like the aesthetics of the design and the colour contrast between the yellow and pink. Although I couldn't add the logo because I couldn't find a suitable layout, I think all the other elements work together cohesively.
User feedback: The users liked the designs of the posters and how I utilised the imagery of the perfume bottle cohesively.
ZINE DESIGN
I wanted to create a brand zine that would be compact and small to distribute to consumers. I think this suited the aesthetics of the brand more and was a more unique way of showcasing the brand identity.
Design Process
Software used: Indesign, Photoshop.
Through the zine research from assignment 1, I have concluded that I wanted textures within my zine. It should almost feel like stamps on paper, giving it a raw, aesthetic feel.
I firstly designed the cover page of the zine, using the flower element from the posters.
Then placing the brand name within the logo, making the text element more subtle.
Then I planned out what the content on each spread would be, the first page would be a about page that gives a small explanation on what the brand is about. Then the scent page, though I won't be adding a specific scent list, but more of the direction of scents the brand wants to explore. Then the style page, explaining the aesthetic of the brand. Then the final spread is the contacts with all the contact information for the brand.
As I wanted textured graphic elements on the page I found stock images which I added the halftone effect for a more stamp like look.
Then I selected other elements too add to the pages, including the brand shape and perfume.
I reused the floral element which I thought was a bit too colourful for the page so decided to turn it monochromatic and use it more for the background.
I added the texts and headers for each page, and keeping the text quite small so that the zine can be of an A8 size.
Then I combined the image elements to each spread, keeping in mind to keep everything minimalistic. I made a duplicate of the perfume shape ad overlapped it over itself which I think makes a great image element.
Then for the back cover I simply added the brand shape in the middle which I think is a nice touch.
I think the zine turned out nicely, where I focused more on minimalism and texture to create visual interest on the page. I think the fonts worked well with the graphic elements and I learned a lot of new skills and insights in creating design elements for print designs.
SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNT
In creating the instagram account, I researched into other perfume brand accounts which I found were mostly product images which I thought I wanted to divert. I didn't want the page just to be filled with product images but also images that expressed the brand's themes and aesthetics.
Design Process
Softwares used: Indesign, Photoshop, Blender.
I firstly created the instagram account taking the Nak perfume name.
Then I gathered different stock images that I though fit the brand themes. I also combined images together to create more layers of depths.
I gathered different product images and stock images and created a layout in Indesign so I knew what order I needed to post the images and how the composition looked side to side. I swapped out images that felt too repetitive and created new scenes within blender.
Then finally i posted all the images onto instagram, and added text to all the posts.
I also created mockup images for the instagram page adding screenshots of my phone screen and adding into the mockup.
I am quite happy with the instagram page as I was able to produce exactly what I had envisioned. I didn't want it to feel too commercial and product heavy, but more natural and aesthetic which I think I have achieved.
MERCHENDISE
Software used: Rawpixel
I though of various elements for the merchandise, including t-shirts, hoodies and tote bags. I wanted them to feel of quality, while expressing the minimalism of the brand.
I mainly used the logo, brand name and the brand shape in these merchandises and didn't add too much elements to them. I liked the simplicity which played well with the brand.
I also attempted to different combinations of the logos on different products to showcase the possibilities of variations.
I mainly used the website Rawpixels which has a built in mockup editing program that allowed me to experiment with different varieties of mockups.

REFLECTION
Overall, I think the project was completed quite successfully where I could showcase my skillsets in various design spectrums. I was able to step out of my comfort zone explore a new skillset in 3D modelling, and produce satisfactory results.
Aspects that were effective within the project were that I was able to keep the branding and designs consistent throughout all deliverables. User feedback I received confirmed this aspect where I received positive reviews on the consistency. I also liked how I was able to be more experimental with the types of design elements I used making very unique aesthetics that contribute to the overall brand identity. The poster designs were unique and aesthetically made, using more abstract colour palettes and graphic elements which I am quite happy with.
For the constraints of the projects, because of my lack of skills with blender and 3D modelling, I wasn’t able to produce results of the highest quality. As I only had a short period to learn and utilise the software I had to be more creative with basic skills while doing continuous research. I wasn’t able to explore more experimental shapes and forms with either the perfume or packaging, but I still think I tried to the best of my ability. There was also quite a time constraint as I had to produce a wide range of deliverables within quite a short time frame. I wasn’t able to add additional elements to improve my designs after receiving user feedbacks as it was too late to make the changes. I was also not able to produce more varieties of deliverables as learning blender was already quite a heavy task for me. I think exploring designs in AR or web design with Figma would also have been a very interesting deliverable that I considered exploring.
In the future, I would like to explore more skillsets within various types of design matter AR or web design when I have the opportunity. I would also like to continuously develop my skills in 3D modelling so I can expand my design spectrum as a designer and be able to produce higher quality works that I can be satisfied with. I think the project was a very insightful and meaningful experience that allowed me to grow and learn various aspects.
