THE CHALLENGE
For years, our organization has been dedicated to providing safe, healthy, and energy-efficient housing for low-income families.
We recently received news that our $11.4 million EPA Community Change grant awarded in 2024, which provided a historic amount of investment for new affordable housing and the repair of existing housing in the Union Heights community of North Charleston, has been terminated. This EPA grant provided $2.7 million in funding to repair, weatherize and upgrade 50 homes in the community. While the termination is being by fought by us through litigation, this unexpected change has left families in urgent need of assistance. These families, whose homes are suffering from issues like leaky roofs, sinking floors, and poor insulation, now face an uncertain future. Without immediate action, these homes will fall into further disrepair, posing health and safety risks to residents and skyrocketing energy bills.
THE OPPORTUNITY
We refuse to let this be the end of the story for these families. We are launching an emergency capital campaign to bridge this funding gap and ensure these critical home repair projects are completed. The homes – many dating back to the early 1900’s – have urgent health and safety needs. Because of their age and condition, many of these households are also energy insecure. Our goal is to fix and upgrade these homes so that the current and future generations of families living in them experience healthy, safe and affordable living environments.
Our campaign goal is to raise $1,000,000 to serve these families.
THE IMPACT
Every dollar raised will be directly invested into the homes and the community.
By contributing to this campaign, you will be funding tangible repairs and providing a direct, positive impact on a family's life. $40,000 per home provides:
- A Solid Roof Overhead: Repairing or replacing leaky roofs to protect families from the elements.
- Critical Structural Repairs: Addressing foundational issues, floor and wall repairs, and other safety hazards.
- Energy-Efficient Windows & Doors: Installing new windows and doors to drastically reduce energy loss and utility bills.
- New HVAC Units: Installing high-efficiency HVAC systems, new ductwork and programmable thermostats.
- Effective Insulation: Insulating attics, walls, and crawl spaces to ensure homes stay warm in winter and cool in summer.
- Health and Safety Improvements: Installing smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and fixing faulty ventilation.
