Hello and welcome!
I'm delighted to have you here. This website is designed to keep you informed about what’s happening in our classroom, celebrate your child’s learning and help you stay connected with school life.
We had an absolutely fantastic trip to Big Pit! The children demonstrated excellent behaviour throughout the entire visit, representing the school brilliantly. The experience was incredibly informative, and everything we have been learning in our Pits and Ponies topic suddenly came alive right before our eyes. After arriving, we were split into two groups and kitted out just like real miners—with a hard hat, a mining lamp and a safety belt. Then came the part everyone had been waiting for: travelling 90 metres (300 feet) underground using the original mining shaft. It was an unforgettable moment as the cage descended deeper and deeper into the old coal mine. Once underground, the pupils amazed the guides by asking super-detailed, thoughtful questions about life as a miner, the machinery, the dangers and how the mine operated day-to-day. Their curiosity and enthusiasm shone through and the guides were incredibly impressed by their knowledge. Walking through the tunnels, seeing the equipment, and hearing real stories from miners helped us understand our topic like never before. It felt as though the history we studied had jumped out of the classroom and into real life.
It was a day full of learning, excitement, and pride—one we will all remember for a long time!
Internet Safety Day
To celebrate Internet Safety Day, our class took part in a live lesson that focused on how to stay safe online and included a fun, interactive quiz all about AI. After the lesson, we had a class discussion about the role of AI in our lives. We talked about the fantastic support AI can offer—from helping us learn new things to assisting with creative ideas and problem‑solving. We also explored some of the disadvantages and risks, such as not always knowing if information is accurate, making sure personal data is kept safe and being aware that AI can sometimes make mistakes. The class shared thoughtful ideas about how to use AI responsibly and safely.
Numeracy
We have used scales to weigh amounts to the nearest half interval, convert from grams to kilograms and vice versa.
GB para-triathlete Rhiannon Henry
We were delighted to welcome Paralympian Rhiannon Henry to our school, she inspired our pupils through an energetic and engaging sponsored fitness circuit with every class, giving all pupils the chance to take part, challenge themselves and celebrate the importance of staying active. Following the practical session, Rhiannon delivered an inspiring whole-school assembly, sharing her personal journey, achievements and the resilience that has shaped her sporting career. Her visit concluded with a question-and-answer session, where we had the opportunity to ask thoughtful questions about training, motivation, overcoming challenges and life as an elite athlete.
RSPB Bird Watch 2026
As Year 5 pupils, we decided to collect data for the RSPB Birdwatch because it helps scientists and conservation groups understand what is happening to bird populations in the UK. We chose to use a tally chart to collect our bird‑watching data because tally marks are quick and easy to record while we are watching the birds. Instead of writing numbers each time, we can just make a small mark. This helps us keep track of how many birds we see without losing count. Tally charts also make the information easy to read and compare, so we can quickly spot which birds were seen the most and which were seen the least.

Christmas Dinner
On Christmas Jumper Day, we enjoyed a delicious turkey dinner served by our teachers, who even cleaned up afterwards – it was such a special treat!
Winner of our Enterprise Estimation
I am delighted to announce the winner of our recent Enterprise Challenge! The competition involved estimating the number of cotton balls in a glass jar—a tricky task that had everyone guessing. Congratulations to Esmé, who made the closest estimate of 60 cotton balls, which was exactly correct! This activity was a fun way to encourage problem-solving, logical thinking and a little bit of luck. Thank you to all the pupils who took part and showed fantastic enthusiasm. We are so proud of their creativity and entrepreneurial spirit!
Christmas Enterprise Afternoon
Year 5 had a fantastic and positive enterprise afternoon! The children worked together to create and sell their chosen products—reindeer food and colourful loom bands—after voting for the most popular ideas. They confidently handled money, calculated change and interacted with parents and other pupils, showing great teamwork and communication skills. Everyone enjoyed taking part in the fun challenge of estimating how many pompoms were in the jar, adding an extra layer of excitement to the event. It was a brilliant opportunity for the children to learn real-life skills in a creative and enjoyable way!
Christmas Enterprise
Today, we presented our Christmas Enterprise homework to the class. Each of us shared our ideas and tried to use plenty of persuasive language—something we’ve been learning about this week—to encourage everyone to vote for our project.
Bishop Vaughan
We went on a class trip to Bishop Vaughan, where we enjoyed a variety of fun and creative lessons. We tackled an exciting escape room challenge using maths problems, memorised a map of Wales to locate castles and took part in an engaging PE session.
Outdoor Learning Day
We made the most of the outdoor environment by working in pairs to find and solve subtraction word problems. Afterwards, we took part in an exciting relay challenge where we raced to a problem, solved it as quickly as possible, and sprinted back to help our team finish first.
Grids and coordinates
We explored coordinates and grids by using our outdoor area. We discussed what a grid is, why it is useful, and how to create one. We learned that grids need an X-axis (horizontal) and a Y-axis (vertical) and that coordinates can be represented using numbers or letters.
CAHMS
CAMHS visited Year 5 to deliver a session on 'How to manage emotions effectively'.
Theatr na nÓg
In October 2025, Year 5 and Year 6 enjoyed an exciting school trip to Swansea. We watched a brilliant play titled 'Eye of the Storm' and took part in engaging workshops at Swansea Museum and the Waterfront.
Fire Safety
We were visited by the fire service, who explained how quickly fires can start from electrical appliances and what steps to take if a fire occurs at home. They also reminded us to check our smoke alarms every week.
Outdoor Learning
We enjoyed outdoor learning with the Urdd, where they helped us develop our orienteering skills by using symbols.
Roses and Royals
Fight for the Crown
After reading the information text about the fight for the Crown. The children had to work in two opposing teams – the House of York and the House of Lancaster – they reenacted what happened at the Battle of Bosworth. They had to think carefully about choreographing their movements.
The first Tudor king
We read the story 'Henry VII: The First Tudor King', the children then sequence the story by using the sequencing cards.
Debate - 1536 Act of Union
As a class we discussed whether we thought these laws were fair. We divided into two groups. One group took on the role of the Welsh gentry and supported the Act. The other group were the Welsh labourers and opposed the Act.
Peri Roadshow
We recently enjoyed a wonderful trip to see a live musical performance. It was a fantastic experience that brought together pupils from Catholic primary schools across Neath Port Talbot. This event was part of our Expressive Arts curriculum and gave the children a chance to engage with music and performance in a vibrant, shared setting.
Class Saint- St. Christopher
For our school homework, we were asked to choose a class saint. Each of us shared our research with the class, and then we voted for the saint we felt best represented us.
Year 5 votes = St Mary x 0 St Joseph x 0 Mother Teresa x 0 St Patrick x 2 St Christopher x 14 St John of Damascus x 0 St Scrosoppi x 1 St Jacinta Marto x 0 St Mary Magdalene x 0 Carlo Acutis x 4 St Catherine of Bologna x 0 St Valentine x 1 St Francis of Assisi x 2 St Joseph of Cupertino x 0 St Nicholas x 1 St Michael x 0 St Rose of Lima x 4 St Anthony x 1
