3. FORMALITIES & GOVERNMENT AGENCIES

Phase 1: The Integrity Check (48 Hours Out) [ ] Steering & Propulsion

  • Verify full travel on the rudder (no slop or noises).
  • Visual inspect the autopilot ram and hydraulics.
  • Confirm the engine is serviced, all belts are tight, and primary fuel filters are clean.

[ ] Rigging & Sails

  • Verify the DSC function on your VHF (make a routine test call).

  • Perform the self-test on your EPIRB (confirm the light flashes/green LED).
  • Ensure the EPIRB battery is in-date and registered.

[ ] AIS Transponder

  • Confirm you are not only receiving but transmitting your position (check with a neighboring vessel).

Phase 3: The Final Watch (6 Hours Out) [ ] Stowing for Sea

  • Everything below decks must be locked and lashed.
  • Ensure all lockers have positive latches that won't open at a 30-degree heel.
  • Check that all anchors and tenders are secured on deck.

[ ] Rigging for Night

  • Prepare your jacklines and run them from bow to stern.
