from the Principal

Outstanding work South Sydney!

We’ve been featured in the Sydney Morning Herald (again) for our outstanding HSC results.

Over the last few years, our average scores have lifted significantly as a result of the hard work of our teachers and students. We're not stopping here

Thank You to Our P&C for a Fantastic 80's Vibe Trivia Night!

A huge thank you to our Parents and Citizens (P&C) Association for organising and running an amazing 80s vibe trivia night. It was a fun-filled evening that brought our community together, raised plenty of smiles, and importantly, raised much-needed funds for our school.

Your dedication and hard work are truly appreciated, and the success of the event wouldn’t have been possible without your efforts. Thank you for supporting our school and helping us provide the best opportunities for our students.

Everyone had fun!
Oh, what a night!

A note from the P&C - Trivia Night

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

With only 2 sleeps to go till the Sydney Marathon and the close of our online raffle, now is the time to help this great school and break some more records by making our Trivia Night the best fundraiser South Sydney High has ever seen!!!

Just scan the QR code, click on the embedded PDF link or go to https://rafflelink.com.au/sshstrivia2025 and give yourself a 1/3/7/15/20 or even 50 chance of winning one or more of 115 prizes worth over a combined $11,000...

The raffle closes at 11:59pm this Sunday night, which is a week before Father's Day, so wouldn't Dad be stoked to receive something you had never thought of getting him and so much more useful than a tie???

Good luck to those that have purchased tickets!

Best wishes,

Anthony Fajwul - 2023-2025 SSHS P&C President

PS: Winners shall be notified by email within a day or two of the draw and will be able to collect their prizes from the school office.

Congratulations to Debs!

Well done to Debs who performed at the Opera House this week as part of the State Wind Ensemble. We are especially proud of Debs, who had the honour of tuning the entire ensemble before the start of their performance. A fantastic achievement and a memorable experience for Debs.

Well done Debs!

Showcase at the Juniors

Our talented Dance Ensemble — Mia, Talia, Cleo, Jamie, Alexia, Daisy, and Makenna — alongside Year 11 Music students, Rhys and Trinity, dazzled a large audience at the recent Juniors Showcase. Their outstanding performances highlighted their dedication and skill, leaving everyone thoroughly impressed.

Well done to all performers for sharing your passion and talent with the community!

At the Showcase, we were delighted not only to have talented performers but also our Entertainment student, Grace, who has been volunteering at the Showcase for four years. Grace is a fantastic stage assistant—efficient, responsible, and someone who truly makes SSHS proud through her respectful and kind interactions with students and staff from our local schools. This year, her technical knowledge has continued to develop, thanks to her Entertainment Studies course and the guidance of Mr Benson. Well done, Grace!

Thank you Grace!

Let Us Be Known by Our Deeds: Good Deeds of the Week

This week, we celebrated at the school assembly the quiet acts of kindness that happen when no one is watching. Whether it’s helping a classmate, sharing a smile, or lending a hand without expecting recognition, these thoughtful gestures truly embody our motto: Let us be known by our Deeds. Well done to all who have shown compassion and care—your actions make our school a better place for everyone.

Good effort from our staff - dressing up for Wear It Purple Day!

We thank everyone who took part in the Purple Room concert and look forward to continuing our commitment to inclusion every day of the year.

Book an Adventure - Book Week 2025

Last Friday, the South Sydney High School community embraced our adventurous spirits to celebrate the joy of reading and stories for Book Week. This year marks 80 years of Children’s Book Week from the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA). The CBCA aims to enrich young lives through Australian stories, culminating in the Book of the Year awards. Judging from the high participation rate, enthusiasm and joy which was displayed at our Dress Up day, SSHS is achieving the vision of the CBCA – “To see a thriving creative world embracing the transformational power of stories, across generations.” (https://cbca.org.au/about/).

I was overwhelmed with the creativity, effort and imagination of staff and students alike. It was extremely difficult to judge; however, prizes were awarded to the following students:

Laylah - Year 7, Amelia - Year 8, Wiley - Year 8, Beau - Year 12 and Bella - Year 12

Steven - Year 12, guessed the exact amount of how many bookworms in the jar – 271.

It was such a fun day. Can’t wait for next year!

Speaking of Mental Health....

Last week, Nic Newling, founder of The Champions, presented to our Year 10 students on the topic of mental health.

Nic connects with students through honest storytelling. Nic’s talk follows the highs and lows of having a mood disorder, the challenges of being misdiagnosed, and the grief of losing his brother to suicide.

By sharing his story, Nic brought to life the hidden reality of living with a mental illness in school and how to address it using empathy, understanding and peer support. His thought-provoking presentation is emotionally impactful, humorous at times, honest, and most importantly, filled with hope.

Some feedback from our students:

"The best mental health presentation I have ever sat through. He didn’t tell me the world was all sunshine and rainbows, but he explained how it’s important to accept all events you are faced with and find a logical and healthy solution to the problem.”

“Thank you so much Nic, you truly changed my life and outlook on myself. The presentation was absolutely amazing x"

“…I heavily related to the content and his experiences/the feelings he described. I absolutely loved the presentation, I felt so seen, and no longer alone in my past and present struggles.”

National Science Week

This year’s National Science Week theme, “Decoding the Universe – Exploring the Unknown with Nature’s Hidden Language”, inspired a range of exciting activities across our school.

Students put their minds to the test with a problem-solving design challenge and classroom scavenger hunts, while staff and students alike joined in the fun of a lunchtime Science Trivia Quiz .

Our Year 7Y and 8Y enrichment classes also had the opportunity to attend the Science Festival at the Australian Museum and the Royal Botanic Gardens, engaging with hands-on exhibits and exploring the wonders of science beyond the classroom.

It was fantastic to see so much energy, curiosity, and teamwork throughout the week. Fun was had by all.

Year 10 VALID Test

The Year 10 online VALID Science test will be held on Monday 1st September during Periods 3 and 4.

A catch-up session will run on Wednesday 3rd September during Periods 1 and 2 for any students who are absent.

Term 3 sport for our Year 7-10 students is in full swing, with a fantastic mix of activities taking place both on and off-site. Our Year 9 and 10 students have been making the most of the external options, sharpening their ten pin bowling skills, perfecting their pickleball spins, showcasing their footwork in indoor futsal, and, for the girls, building strength and flexibility through gymnastics.

On-site, students have been enthusiastically participating in volleyball, competitive handball, and lively games of soccer. Our walking groups have clocked up countless laps around Heffron Park, steadily boosting their daily steps, while our theatre sports enthusiasts have been honing their creativity and improvisation skills.
