Notes From The Den Principal's Newsletter - Mar 2024

Dear Cougar Students and Parents,

March is Music In Our Schools Month! We are extremely fortunate to have 3 amazing musical talents teaching and mentoring our MVHS vocalists and musicians. Thank you Ms. Irvin, Mr. Robinson and Mr. Chaiet for all that you do to bring music to our school community and beyond.

Spring testing is upon us. We have done our best to space out the various State Assessment and AP tests through the month of April and May to ensure students do not have overlapping testing commitments.

Students registered for AP testing will receive the test dates and instructions from their AP teacher.

State Testing for 11th grade students begins upon our return from spring break. Students will be taking these tests through their regularly scheduled ELA, Science and Math classes:

  • 4/1 – 4/5: ELA
  • 4/15 – 4/19: Science
  • 4/29 – 5/3: Math

Finally, Parent-Teacher Conferences are scheduled for Wednesday, 4/17 from 4-8pm. During this time, teachers will be available in their classrooms to meet with parents for 10-15 min conference sessions on a drop-in basis. No appointments are required (however, some teachers may reach out to prearrange appointments if desired). More details will be posted on our school website here as we get closer to the conference time. Please mark your calendars and plan to spend a portion of your evening with us.

Keep reading for more happenings on and off campus this month.

New Rule For E-Bikes, E-Scooters

Bend-La Pine Schools will begin enforcing new rules governing e-bikes and e-scooters on school campuses. Families have time between now and April 8 to adjust to this change by doing the following:

  • For students under 16, families should arrange alternative transportation to and from school
  • For students 16 and older who wish to bring an e-bike/scooter on campus, please register the e-bike/scooter with our school office (the same way student vehicles are registered to receive parking passes).
This week we are holding our second annual Mental Health Week at MVHS. We emailed parents last week with notes regarding the slightly altered bell schedule and daily activities. Thank you to our Sources of Strength class and our school counselors or all of the hard work they put into making this week fun, informative and engaging!
To our Cougar Families : We are your friendly neighborhood Sources of Strength team. We are all about hope, help, and strength. We are here to reduce stigma and raise awareness about mental health by turning to our strengths and connecting others to help build hope for the future. Our Sources of Strength team dedicated this week to focusing on mental health awareness. We participated in multiple events throughout the week to take stress off of the students, and help raise awareness! One of these activities was to write down a trusted adult on a notecard. We actually found that a large number of students wrote down a parent/guardian on their card! We wanted to let you know how important you are to our cougar community, and you are someone our students can turn to in times of stress. You all are making a positive difference in our community, thank you all so much for everything you do. We hope you all know how grateful our students are for your guys’ support.

Parent Resource Corner

Raising children and teens has become more challenging in recent years. Our partners at Deschutes County Health have a couple events planned for parents that touch on Substance Use and Technology Use. These events are free and are open to all families or other caregivers supporting students in Kindergarten through 12th grade.

Mark your calendars & save the date for an evening of fun and fundraising for our Sparrow and FAN! 7pm in the MV Auditorium. Admission is $5 per student, $10 per adult.

Explore Resources Before Spring Break

The countdown to spring break is on and for many, it’s a time for rest and a little adventure. It also comes with stress and challenges. It’s important to stay mindful and take care of ourselves. Here are some helpful tips for a more stress-free spring break:

  • Consider ways to modify plans that may negatively impact your mental health.
  • Don't forget the power of "no." It's okay to say no to plans if you are feeling overwhelmed.
  • Plan ahead. Keeping a calendar of events can help you stay on track and be ready.
  • Talk about your feelings. You might be overwhelmed or missing a loved one. Talking about your feelings with a trusted friend or family member is okay. You are not alone.
  • Take time for self-care. It's important to take care of ourselves before caring for others.
