What's On? Week 9 | Term 2 - 2025 | 23 June 2025 | Mullumbimby High School Newsletter

Message from our Principal

This past week has been filled with numerous opportunities for our students. The extensive range of extracurricular and classroom activities available at our school is a testament to the dedication of our staff, and their efforts are greatly appreciated.

Leadership Opportunities

On Monday, following our assembly, our student leaders engaged in a productive discussion with their counterparts from Brunswick Heads Public School. This informal meeting focused on leadership and the opportunities offered at Mullumbimby High, highlighting the promising future of our student leadership, academic, sporting, and cultural achievements.

Mathematics Enhancement Program

The Maths faculty is currently collaborating with the Maths Growth Team to enhance lesson delivery. The Maths Growth Team is led by the department’s most famous Maths Teacher, Eddie Woo. This initiative aims to engage students, foster a love for mathematics, and improve overall results. This commitment to continuous improvement is expected to yield positive outcomes in the classroom.

Aboriginal Students and Bangarra Dance Theatre

On Tuesday, a group of our Aboriginal students participated in a workshop with The Rekindling team from Bangarra Dance Theatre. This experience allowed students to explore choreography and cultural expression. Notably, Year 10 student Marlee demonstrated exceptional engagement throughout the day, alongside Year 9 student Indi and Year 7 students India and Kirra, who showcased resilience and dedication during the workshop. Our Aboriginal dancers and artists are working together with our Muggi Muggi Culture leaders to celebrate NAIDOC week across our schools in week 10 and in week 1 term 3. Our school NAIDOC ceremony will be on Thursday 24 July.

Learning about Addressing Challenges

Timely support is often necessary to address significant challenges. Last week, our Year 9 students participated in workshops to address some challenging social issues including values and virtues, building strong relationships, challenging violence and our role in change. Maintaining high expectations for student behaviour within a supportive framework remains a priority here at Mullumbimby High School. We are continuing to address issues such as mobile phone usage (remember they are banned in NSW schools), toilet cleanliness, positive wearing of the school uniform and on time, in class behaviours. By collectively upholding these standards, we can ensure a strong conclusion to this term and a positive start to the next.

Education Behaviour Code for Students

All students were encouraged last week to talk about the NSW Department of Education’s Behaviour Code for Students with their families. We recognise that the majority of students do the right thing each and every day and are respectful, responsible and engaged with their learning. We are encouraging students to be up-standers when their peers step outside of these high expectations.

Village Voices

Last week, the completion of the Village Voices group’s project was celebrated at the Byron Bay Youth Activity Centre. Students collaborated with knowledge holders and YAC staff to create films reflecting their experiences as Aboriginal young men. The process included traditional practices, such as fishing with spears, and has had a significant impact on both family and school life.

Winter Festival at the Pocket Public School
MHS students performing at the Pocket Winter Festival

Congratulations to the community of The Pocket Public School. They delivered a wonderful Winter Festival with our music students contributing to the entertainment on the day. The Year 12 rock band, Stellar, opened the day and Maayan and Alex also delivered fantastic performances for the large crowd. Appreciation is extended to Gary for his ongoing support of our music students.

Supporting our Feeder Schools Carnivals

Furthermore, our students served as officials at both the Brunswick Heads and Ocean Shores Public Schools athletics carnivals, receiving positive feedback from partner primary school principals regarding their exemplary conduct.

Thank you for your continued support of our students and community.

A Note from our P&C

Our P&C meeting last week provided a platform for healthy conversation around many topics. We nutted out some ideas around the senior school uniform and possible future changes. Uniform sub-committee will take those ideas further. Feel free to join if you feel inclined.

Fundraiser ideas were brainstormed. We’re getting closer to making them happen.

We had a good look at the head of department asset requests, with a view to making some of those purchases with P&C funds. Our request list will be moved to a working document, so that active members can add relevant details as we prioritise those items. Watch this space for details as those purchases happen.

Next P&C Meeting: Monday 4 August, 5:30pm in the School Library. The meeting will begin at 5:45pm.We’d love you to join us.
