An ALPR Success Story
On Monday, we were made aware of an illegal dumping that had occurred on Sierra Point Parkway, containing household debris. The Brisbane Police Department began an investigation to locate the suspects who were responsible for the incident. A search of the material contained information on the owner of the debris, and with the aid of the Police Department’s Automated License Please Readers (ALPRs), officers were able to locate the vehicle used in the incident, which was parked outside of a San Francisco residence. The investigating officers contacted the individuals who agreed to retrieve their debris, which they did within the next few hours. We are glad this resulted in a positive outcome and that the area is clean and debris-free again!
Bike to Work (or Wherever) Days 2024
There may have been less cyclists out last Thursday than in past years (definitely less than pre-pandemic; the most Recreation Supervisor Ricardo Monroy's seen roll through then was 924 cyclists!), but there was still a lot of cycling spirit from this year's Bike to Work (or Wherever) participants. Like the manual-powered VW Beetle that pulled up to Park and Rec's Energizer Station on Tunnel & Lagoon.
Bike to Work (or Wherever) Day is generally on a Thursday in mid-May...if you want to be ready for next year's, you may want to subscribe to Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition's mailing list.

Help First Responders Find You!
Public Works in many ways act as first responders in emergencies. What can make a huge difference in critical emergency situations such as a medical emergency or a structure fire, is how fast first responders such as our officers and North County Fire Authority personnel can find you. One of the messages that North County Fire Authority personnel stress is the importance of keeping your address numbers visible and large enough for firefighters to quickly locate the residence reporting the emergency. If the numbers on your home are not there or easy to find or read, it will take longer for emergency personnel to help you.
House numbers should meet the following requirements:
- Numbers need to be a minimum of 4 inches high and in a contrasting color to their background.
- Must be displaced on the front of the dwelling and visible from the street in both directions.
- Cannot be obstructed by shrubs, trees, decorations, etc.
- Fancy shaped letters or numbers that are spelled out should be avoided. These may be aesthetically pleasing, but are difficult to quickly read from the street.
- If the dwelling is located more than 45 feet from the front of the lot line, the number should be displayed on a gate post, fence, mailbox, or other appropriate place that will make it visible from the street from all directions.
Please take a moment to look at your house numbers. Make sure your numbers follow the above guidelines. It will help emergency crews find you easier and faster. And remember, please use 9-1-1 responsibly. 9-1-1 is for Police, Fire, or medical emergencies (fires, car accidents with injuries, or any other medical emergency).
Update on Construction Happenings in Town
Last November, an update was provided on several projects under construction or soon-to-be under construction on City streets, namely on: Bayshore, Lagoon, and Sierra Point Parkway. Intersection improvements at the Sierra Point Parkway & US 101 Northbound off-ramp were completed earlier this month. This project involved installing traffic signals, which were required as a mitigation measure for the HCP/Healthpeak development located on the south shore of Sierra Point.
In recent months, the amount of construction seen on Bayshore Blvd. has increased due to several different fiber optic cable installations taking place at the same time. One is a private project that C/CAG “piggybacked” onto and is funding for future support of their Smart Corridor extension project, which was approved by the Council at their February 15th City Council meeting. The project runs the entire length of Bayshore within Brisbane. Another fiber installation in Bayshore is also the final underground project we can permit within the paved portion of Bayshore; after this installation, there is only room left for future utility corridors for City infrastructure.
Two contractors are completing separate fiber optic projects in three sections of Bayshore. Contractor 1 has completed the north section from Geneva to Guadalupe. Contractor 2 has completed the fiber installation on the middle section from San Bruno Avenue to Tunnel/Old County. The pothole/trench repair for the middle section should be completed within the next 10 days. After that, Contractor 2 will begin their installation in the northern section, and Contractor 1 will begin work in the southern section (from the City's boundary with SSF up to San Bruno Avenue). We thank you for your continued patience as this work is completed.
Public Art Community Survey: What do YOU Envision for Public Art in Brisbane?
As outlined in the City’s Art in Public Places Ordinance, public art has the power to energize our public spaces, arouse our thinking, and transform the places where we live, work, and play into more welcoming and beautiful environments that invite interaction. By its presence alone, public art can heighten our awareness, question our assumptions, transform a landscape, or express community values, and for these reasons it can have the power, over time, to transform a city's image. Public art helps define a community's identity and reveal its unique character.
To this end, the City of Brisbane administered a widespread Request for Proposals (RFP) process and accompanying interviews to select NINE dot ARTS, a national art consulting and creative placemaking firm, to develop the city’s first-ever Public Art Master Plan.
What do YOU envision for public art in Brisbane? Share your ideas by participating in a short community survey by July 19th! Answers will be collected and compiled into recommendations related to the types and locations of public art in Brisbane.
If you’d prefer to complete a physical version of the survey, you will find a copy in the June STAR (dropping in mailboxes around 6/1). If you want to pick up a copy now, you can find them at City Hall, the Library, or the Sunrise Room. To request the survey in another language, please email Parks and Recreation Director Noreen Leek at nleek@brisbaneca.org. Thank you in advance for making your voices heard!
