Women's Lacrosse Takes Out Stevens and Wesleyan, Advances to Final Four in Virginia
With a 17-6 victory over #17 Stevens on Saturday and a 7-6 win over #7 Wesleyan Sunday, the fourth-ranked Mules hit a program record 17 wins for the season and earned a trip to the NCAA Division III Final Four for the first time in program history.
Saturday's matchup against Stevens saw an incredibly tight game throughout the first 30 minutes with the Ducks and Mules entering the break tied at five. Colby exploded in the third quarter for eight scores and added another four in the final frame to move on to Sunday's rematch with the Cardinals.
Julia Jardina led the charge with five goals and first-year Charlotte Michener added four. Defensively Kat Munter and Gisele Uva collected three ground balls and caused four turnovers apiece.
It had been 11 weeks since Colby's 9-8 victory over Wesleyan to open the season on March 1st, but the matchup proved to be just as tight. The Mules jumped out to a 5-3 lead at the break and added a goal in the third and another early in the fourth. The Cardinals refused to go down easily, scoring two quick goals midway through the final frame and pulling to within one with just under a minute to play. Wesleyan won the final draw and entered Colby's end intent on finding the equalizer, but the defense of the Mules did what they have done all season and came up with a big stop to run out the clock.
The balance of the offense was on display, as seven different goal scorers collected a tally. Defensively, the Mules were remarkable. Jillian Kane collected six stops in net and the duo of Munter and Uva teamed up for six ground balls and five more caused turnovers.
#4 Colby will be joined by #1 Middlebury, #2 Tufts, and #5 Gettysburg in Salem, Virginia later this week for the remaining games of the NCAA Division III Championships. The Mules will face off against Middlebury Friday at 4:00pm with hopes of advancing to Sunday's championship game against the winner of Tufts/Gettysburg.
