Tree Planting
Huge thanks to the Estates and Grounds teams who have been busy planting 270 trees in our woodland. Donated by the Woodland Trust, a mixture of silver birch, rowan, willow, wild cherry and English oak, are now in their new home here at Kent College.
Mayor's Toy Appeal
We were joined by Councillor Nancy Warne, the Mayor of Tunbridge Wells along with Trevor Crawford from the Mayor's Toy Appeal, on Friday for a very special Christmas collection. The Mayor's Toy Appeal is a charity that collects donated toys, books and games to give to children who may not have received a Christmas present otherwise. Helped by our Sixth Formers, the car was loaded with a huge amount of gifts. Thanks to the Kent College community for their generous donations which will all go to this fantastic cause. For more information on the charity, click here.
Boarding
The boarders had a fantastic festive weekend with lots of Christmas activities. These included ice skating in Calverley Park in Tunbridge Wells, helping at Chaplain Katie's Christmas Fair at St Peter's Church, and decorating the boarding house!
Upper Sixth Art Trip
Upper Sixth A Level Art students attended the "Art in Action" lecture day on Wednesday at the Emmanuel Centre in London. They enjoyed talks from a wide range of artists including the iconic multi-media artist, Cornelia Parker, and hilarious portrait painter, Stuart Pearson Wright. The speakers explained their diverse practices and artistic journeys to inspire the young creative audience to be filled with ideas and follow their dreams!
Sport
Netball
Congratulations to our U14 netball team who have qualified for the Regionals after tough competition at the Kent finals from the best schools in the county. They competed against schools including Wally Hall, Sevenoaks, Benenden, TGS, TWGGS and Weald. We look forward to the next round in January when they will represent Kent.
Gymnastics
U13 gymnasts, Zarina, Ava, Emily and Sadhbh, competed against five other teams in the Milano Regionals in Guildford. The team performed brilliantly and placed second overall. They will now represent Kent College and the South East region at the National Finals in Stoke in March 2025. We can't wait to see how they get on.
Hockey
The U13 team, fresh from qualifying for the U13 Tier 1 regional hockey competition as second place in the county, travelled to St Benedicts School in Ealing for their ISHC plate match. The Kent College team played extremely confidently, and came away 7-0 winners. A huge well done to the team for their hard work! They now move into the Quarter Finals of the ISHC plate. We find out our next opposition just before Christmas and we look forward to our next game.
Science Club
This week in Science Club, our students integrated Science and Christmas. We made fake snow from sodium chloride and sodium hydrogen carbonate, turned it into (mostly) Christmas themed shapes, and then watched them melt!
Textiles Club
The Textile Club has been busy playing Santa's little elves this week, crafting adorable hearts and eye masks, ready to give as gifts for family, friends, and Secret Santa surprises! Even the crafty Chaplain Katie has been getting in on the action!
Computer Science Awards
In November 90 students took part in the 2024 BEBRAS Challenge and we received the final results this week.
Over 460,000 students in UK schools and we are delighted that 27 students were Gold Award winners, coming in the top 10% of the UK across all three categories – almost a third of KC students!
All students are to be congratulated for giving the tricky challenges a go, and for aspiring to do their very best.
Isla in Year 7 not only achieved Best in School, Gold and Distinction level in the Juniors section but also achieved the maximum possible score of 220 marks. A fantastic achievement and a first for KC!
Huge congratulations also go to Molly who won Best in School, Gold and Distinction level in the Inters section and Harriet in Year 10 Best in School, Gold and Distinction level in the Senior section.
All Year 7 and 8 students and Computer Science option groups will be invited to take part in the new BEBRAS Coding Challenge which will take place in March. This is new for 2025 and further details will be made available as soon as we have them.
A Level Drama Trip
Our A Level Drama and Theatre Studies students went to see a hilarious performance of "The Importance of Being Earnest" at The National Theatre last night. This is a stylish, joyous production, based on Oscar Wilde's 1895 farce. A must see for all theatre goers!
