Welcome to the 2024 Spring Term edition of St Hugh's Highlights, giving you an overview of this term's activities!
Topics and Trips
Nursery and Pre-school celebrated Lunar New Year. They had great fun pretending to be dragons as they learnt all about the Year of the Dragon.
They have enjoyed their topic on Dinosaurs...
...and looked forward to Forest School, music and swimming lessons, and visits from Mme Clayton and 'Camembear'.
This term, Reception class learnt lots about food and where it comes from.
They became expert pizza makers when they visited Zucci Mediterranean Bistro in the village...
...and enjoyed eating their culinary masterpieces!
They were very lucky to welcome visitors to the classroom to teach them all about the work of dentists. The children pretended to be dentists and talked about which foods are bad for our teeth.
Year 5 pupils eagerly awaited letters from their French pen pals.
The whole class wrote their first letter to a French pen pal living in the Auvergne region and Mme Clayton was asked daily for updates on when they would receive replies!
Agatha won a competition run by Warburton’s to design an ‘Ultimate Lunch Box’ - and bagged her and her classmates a goodie bag and vouchers for school!
Year 6 has been learning about French breakfast and had a lovely surprise in a morning French lesson as they had some chocolat chaud and a pain au chocolat!
Merci Monsieur Wilson!
Whole School Events
We joined in with Place 2 Be's Children's Mental Health Week.
Everyone was encouraged to ‘Find Your Voice’ and think about how we can all make a difference.
Mrs Wallis challenged everyone to the game: "Try Not To Sing 2 – These songs from Sing 2 are too good not to join it with, can you complete this impossible challenge?" It certainly was impossible and the songs were stuck in our heads all day!
Forest School
Music
Science Week
We were very excited to celebrate British Science Week.
As part of the many practical activities that pupils conducted in class, they incorporated the theme of Time.
Mrs Costello was blown away by the number of entries to the poster competition...
...and it was lovely to award the winners and runners-up with Easter treats.
Sport
Cross Country
It has been another busy season seeing teams race at both Copthill and Ayscoughfee Invitational Cross Country.
At Copthill our runners did themselves proud, achieving: U11 Girls - Winners, U11 Boys - 3rd Place, As a school - 2nd place overall.
Back out in action at Ayscoughfee, it proved another fantastic performance from our teams: U9 Boys - 1st, U9 Girls - 2nd, U11 Girls - 2nd, U11 Boys - 3rd.
We had five athletes competing at the Lincolnshire Schools' Cross Country at Burghley.
Athletics Captain, Florence L, headed to Burghley Park alongside teammates Charlotte T and Rupert B-W to take part in the Anglian Schools' Cross Country Championships.
Florence went on to compete at the English Schools' Cross Country Championships in Pontefract, competing in a competitive race of more than 300 athletes. She had a pleasing run, a year young.
Netball
Our netballers have welcomed teams, travelled to fixtures and taken part in coaching clinics to hone their skills.
The U13A team travelled to Uppingham to compete in the IAPS Netball Festival, achieving 3rd Place in the Plate.
The team were delighted to meet Hannah Joseph, England netball star.
NEW EVENTS
There were two "Firsts for St Hugh's" this term...
Our first ever Girls' Rugby Team, with the girls securing a win against QEGS Horncastle.
We also established our first U13 mixed football team and welcomed Wellow for an afternoon of football.
Not forgetting some of our new hobbies which include: boxercise, polo and gymnastics!
The Boarding House
It has been another fabulously busy term in the Boarding House, complete with the reappearance of Dorm 4.
No sooner had everyone's bags been unpacked, it was time for the annual trip to Jump Inc, followed by pizza and time to socialise.
Boarders have enjoyed visits to the swimming pool for inflatable evenings...
...they have tackled escape room challenges...
...and got creative on craft nights, even making their own tie-dye t-shirts.
With the Easter break upon us and ahead of packing their bags, our Boarders were challenged with an Easter egg hunt and decorated their own eggs.
There was even a visit from the Easter bunny...
...Mrs Wallis was nowhere to be seen!
We can't wait to welcome new faces to the Boarding House in the Summer Term!
