Spring Term Highlights 2024

Welcome to the 2024 Spring Term edition of St Hugh's Highlights, giving you an overview of this term's activities!

Topics and Trips

Nursery and Pre-school celebrated Lunar New Year. They had great fun pretending to be dragons as they learnt all about the Year of the Dragon.

They have enjoyed their topic on Dinosaurs...

...and looked forward to Forest School, music and swimming lessons, and visits from Mme Clayton and 'Camembear'.

This term, Reception class learnt lots about food and where it comes from.

They became expert pizza makers when they visited Zucci Mediterranean Bistro in the village...

...and enjoyed eating their culinary masterpieces!

They were very lucky to welcome visitors to the classroom to teach them all about the work of dentists. The children pretended to be dentists and talked about which foods are bad for our teeth.

The whole of Nursery, Pre-school and Pre Prep welcomed Rhubarb Theatre for an afternoon of interactive storytelling.

Year 1 shared the story The Tiger Who Came to Tea and, after writing their own version of the story featuring an animal of their choice, they decided to have their very own tea party with special guests!

Year 1 and 2 turned into scientists for the day...

...and also spent a day exploring Magna Science Adventure Centre as part of their science topic.

They loved finding out about the work of Thomas Edison and Benjamin Franklin and were fascinated when it came to making their own electric circuit!

Year 3 had a great trip to Eureka! The National Children's Museum as part of their science work.

Year 4 has learnt about the Anglo Saxons.

The class enjoyed a video call from researchers from Sutton Hoo and later received artefacts from the site to study.

They even made their own Anglo Saxon oatcakes and baked them on the fire in Forest School.

Year 5 pupils eagerly awaited letters from their French pen pals.

The whole class wrote their first letter to a French pen pal living in the Auvergne region and Mme Clayton was asked daily for updates on when they would receive replies!

Agatha won a competition run by Warburton’s to design an ‘Ultimate Lunch Box’ - and bagged her and her classmates a goodie bag and vouchers for school!

Year 6 has been learning about French breakfast and had a lovely surprise in a morning French lesson as they had some chocolat chaud and a pain au chocolat!

Merci Monsieur Wilson!

Children travelled to Uppingham School to enjoy a Chinese Culture and Language Workshop to celebrate the Year of the Dragon.

A team of eight Year 7s visited Ampleforth College for an academic competition, the Da Vinci Decathlon.

As part of their Stage & Screen topic this term, Year 7 visited Newark College for a day in the Media Department.

The senior play, We Will Rock You, was the culmination of Year 7 and 8's busy rehearsals and what a massive hit it was.

On the evening of the final performance, Forbes Hall was literally packed to the rafters!

A HUGE round of applause to everyone involved.

Whole School Events

We joined in with Place 2 Be's Children's Mental Health Week.

Everyone was encouraged to ‘Find Your Voice’ and think about how we can all make a difference.

Mrs Wallis challenged everyone to the game: "Try Not To Sing 2 – These songs from Sing 2 are too good not to join it with, can you complete this impossible challenge?" It certainly was impossible and the songs were stuck in our heads all day!

It was another fabulous World Book Day where we joined together to share our love of books...

...and yet another year of a fantastic array of costumes!

Children in Pre Prep took a walk into the village to spend their book tokens.

Forest School

We welcomed in the New Year by celebrating Wassailing - waking up the forest, giving thanks to the trees, and making an offering in the hope of a good harvest.

We took part in the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch...

...and made our own bird feeders.

We even hunted for owls in the woods...

The windy weather may have stopped us going into the woods but it didn't stop us getting outdoors and having fun!

We couldn't resist the puddles...

We celebrated Lunar New Year and welcomed the Year of the Dragon...

We were very happy to accept the challenge of making our own pancakes for Shrove Tuesday...

...which included lighting a fire to cook them on!

For Mother's Day we got creative with clay...

...and created our own seed bombs.

We have looked after the forest by planting new trees and litter picking.

We constantly learn new skills - such as the art of Hapa-Zome...

...and using a bow drill...

and thrive on a challenge...

It finally felt like Spring had arrived and we took time to explore...

...and enjoy hot cross buns!

Music

A group of our musicians performed at the Lincoln Music and Drama Festival and had great success:

🎻 First Place for the St Hugh's String Ensemble

🎺 First Place for the St Hugh's Jazz Band

🎺 Best Overall Performance awarded to the St Hugh's Jazz Band.

Our Junior Concert is one of the highlights of the Spring Term. It features every single child from Year 2-6.

This year they were all singing and playing instruments!

It was great to see the children’s enthusiasm and joy as they played and watched their peers perform.

Science Week

We were very excited to celebrate British Science Week.

As part of the many practical activities that pupils conducted in class, they incorporated the theme of Time.

Mrs Costello was blown away by the number of entries to the poster competition...

...and it was lovely to award the winners and runners-up with Easter treats.

Sport

Cricket

Our U13 Girls' Cricket Team were crowned County Champions in the England and Wales Cricket Board Indoor County Final.

Cross Country

It has been another busy season seeing teams race at both Copthill and Ayscoughfee Invitational Cross Country.

At Copthill our runners did themselves proud, achieving: U11 Girls - Winners, U11 Boys - 3rd Place, As a school - 2nd place overall.

Back out in action at Ayscoughfee, it proved another fantastic performance from our teams: U9 Boys - 1st, U9 Girls - 2nd, U11 Girls - 2nd, U11 Boys - 3rd.

We had five athletes competing at the Lincolnshire Schools' Cross Country at Burghley.

Athletics Captain, Florence L, headed to Burghley Park alongside teammates Charlotte T and Rupert B-W to take part in the Anglian Schools' Cross Country Championships.

Florence went on to compete at the English Schools' Cross Country Championships in Pontefract, competing in a competitive race of more than 300 athletes. She had a pleasing run, a year young.

Our Annual Set Cross Country brought the first half of a busy term to a close.

On an incredibly wet day, every pupil in Prep School ran for their set in age group races in front of a large crowd cheering them on.

White Set were crowned the winners!

Football

Out on the football pitch, we've enjoyed a variety of fixtures and enjoyed hosting our own football festival.

Hockey

We took part in the IAPS U11 and U13 hockey tournaments...

...and have been busy developing our skills during coaching sessions and fixtures.

Netball

Our netballers have welcomed teams, travelled to fixtures and taken part in coaching clinics to hone their skills.

The U13A team travelled to Uppingham to compete in the IAPS Netball Festival, achieving 3rd Place in the Plate.

The team were delighted to meet Hannah Joseph, England netball star.

Rugby

We opened our Rugby 7’s account with a trip to Leicester Grammar School for their Invitational 7s Festival.

We played in both the U13 and U12 competition. The U12 boys had every Year 7 boy playing for the team and finished as runners-up against some very large schools.

Swimming

Swimmers travelled to Coventry to compete in one of the IAPS Swimming Regional Qualifiers.

We hosted our U9 Swim Gala v Ranby.

We welcomed parents to watch our Annual Set Swimming Gala.

Every child in Years 3-6 took part and there were some incredible performances...

...and three record breakers: Harriet T, Charlotte J and Annabelle J.

Well done to everyone!

NEW EVENTS

There were two "Firsts for St Hugh's" this term...

Our first ever Girls' Rugby Team, with the girls securing a win against QEGS Horncastle.

We also established our first U13 mixed football team and welcomed Wellow for an afternoon of football.

Not forgetting some of our new hobbies which include: boxercise, polo and gymnastics!

The Boarding House

It has been another fabulously busy term in the Boarding House, complete with the reappearance of Dorm 4.

No sooner had everyone's bags been unpacked, it was time for the annual trip to Jump Inc, followed by pizza and time to socialise.

Boarders have enjoyed visits to the swimming pool for inflatable evenings...

...they have tackled escape room challenges...

...and got creative on craft nights, even making their own tie-dye t-shirts.

They have enjoyed trips into the village...

...visiting Woodhall Spa Fire Station to find out what our local firefighters do and enjoyed meals out.

The term's Science Spectacular saw boarders fire writing and conducting their own experiments.

Our new evening meals have been enjoyed together...

...along with milkshake-making nights!

The balloon modelling workshops always prove to be popular and are lots of fun.

To celebrate Valentine's Day, we made our very own Valen-SLIME and decorated cupcakes...

The most eagerly anticipated evening had to be the Harry Potter Sorting Hat Ceremony!

Wow, what fun was had by all...

...this will be a night our Boarders talk about for some time to come!

We wonder whether Mrs Warwick-Smith can top this!

Throughout the term, we have joined together to celebrate birthdays...

...and welcomed some of our youngest pupils to try out boarding.

With the Easter break upon us and ahead of packing their bags, our Boarders were challenged with an Easter egg hunt and decorated their own eggs.

There was even a visit from the Easter bunny...

...Mrs Wallis was nowhere to be seen!

We can't wait to welcome new faces to the Boarding House in the Summer Term!

Scholarship Success

Congratulations to Aydin and Florence who have been awarded scholarships!

Aydin has been awarded an Oundle All-rounder Scholarship.

Florence has been awarded a Sport and Music Scholarship from Worksop College.

Easter Preparations

Year 3 pupils made cards for family and neighbours and have been very happy to receive replies.

Nursery children made the obligatory Rice Krispie Easter nests...

...and Nursery and Pre Prep enjoyed an Easter egg hunt.

Thank you to our Parents' Association for the Easter eggs!

The Tail Trail

A fantastic way to end the term was our The Tail Trail in aid of Battersea.

Thank you to everyone for entering into the spirit of the event, taking part around the agility course, and for baking cakes!

To all our families and friends...

Have a lovely Easter break!
