This morning we made our way to the Dune du Pilat the highest sand dune in Europe. This was a bit of a surprise as we had no knowledge of it before we spotted the large dune from the ferry port of Cap Ferret the previous day where we caught the ferry across to Arcachon. After googling it, we put it on our agenda for the day and it didn’t disappoint. It blew our socks off! Literally as we ditched our shoes and climbed it barefoot. It is a remarkable natural phenomenon. A living thing that is slowly moving inland between 1 to 5m per year burying anything in its path.
We are now officially on the Vélodyssée and for the most part the path was in great condition with only small sections of rough patches.
Our lunch stop was a visit to one of the beaches along the coast. We brought our own picnic lunch in the form of filled baguette’s from the Boulangerie pàtisserie in Arcachon. We chose to eat our lunch on top of the sand dune as it was quite a steep trip down to the beach and we’d already given ourselves a big enough workout climbing the previous sand dune!
We arrived late in the afternoon at our destination with only time to attend to the daily domestic chores before finding a restaurant nearby for dinner.
We received lovely hospitality at a family run restaurant and the food was delicious! A perfect dinner to complete a fabulous day.
