Principal's Update

Respect, Inclusion, and Our Shared Values

At South Sydney High School, we are proud of our diverse and inclusive community where respect, kindness and understanding are foundational values.

There may be times where some in our school community—both students and families—may be feeling vulnerable, concerned, or uncertain. I want to take this opportunity to reaffirm our unwavering commitment to ensuring that every student feels safe, valued, and supported at school.

We encourage open conversations and urge any student who experiences or witnesses inappropriate behaviour to report it immediately so we can take appropriate action. Our staff are here to listen, support, and educate, fostering an environment where differences are embraced and everyone feels a sense of belonging.

Our school is committed to creating a culture where everyone is treated with dignity. We ask for your partnership in reinforcing these values at home, encouraging conversations about acceptance and understanding, and standing together as a community that upholds inclusion and kindness.

Thank you for your ongoing support in making our school a safe and welcoming space for all.

NSW VET in Schools Team - WorldSkills National Championships

Congratulations Cooper, awarded 2nd place at the 2025 WorldSkills National Championships. Competitors are flown from around the country to showcase and benchmark their skills on the national stage, competing against industry peers from around the country. This is an outstanding achievement and we are so proud.

Young Minds of the Future

Well done Joel from Year 10 who is a member of the EMU Robotics team based at @UNSW Kensington, where young minds are transforming ideas into competitive robots!

I’m committed to fostering STEM education in our community because hands-on learning is how we help build Australia’s future.

EMU Robotics welcomes school students of all experience levels, providing mentorship and skill development in coding, design, and mechanical engineering.

Science is electrifying!

Year 7 students are exploring electrostatic force this term, and used the Van de Graaff generator for hands-on demonstration.

Maths in Action

Year 12 Standard 1 Mathematics took to the court to explore quadratic motion in a hands-on way. Using the arc of a basketball shot, students investigated parabolic paths and connected their textbook learning to real-world motion.

Turns out, calculating the parabola was easier than making the shot for some!

Around the Equestrian Grounds with Carly

North West Equestrian Expo – An Unforgettable Week in Coonabarabran

The North West Equestrian Expo at Coonabarabran (30th of May to the 3rd of June 2025) is the biggest high school inter school equestrian event in Australia and was an absolutely unforgettable experience. With more than 500 students from across the state competing, the atmosphere was full of excitement, support and team spirit. The week was packed with skillful riding and energy, especially during the gymkhana, cross country, polo cross and sporting events, which were definite highlights for many riders. I was super proud of my own results—placing 5th in combined training, 3rd in pairs riding, and 5th in the team hunt, as well as jumping my personal best for the first time. The early mornings and evenings were fresh and crisp when we groomed, fed and attended to our horses but the weather held up beautifully, making the whole event even better. Everything ran smoothly, and it was just one of those weeks you wish didn’t have to end. Participating in the event increased my confidence in my riding skills, I made new friendships and was able to build on my experience to prepare for future competitions. I’m already counting down the days till next year and representing the school again!

My next competition is a combined training (dressage and show jumping 60cm events) at Northside Riding Club at St Ives Showgrounds on Sunday 29 June.

Year 10 Food Tech Students Impress with Imaginative Line Extension Creations

This week, our talented Year 10 Food Technology students completed their Line Extension Practical Assessment Task and the results were nothing short of delicious!

As part of the unit, students were challenged to take an existing product and develop a creative twist to appeal to a new market. The kitchen was buzzing with innovation and energy as students brought their ideas to life.

From Biscoff-loaded cookies and crispy mozzarella sticks to strawberry mochi donuts and white chocolate brownies, the variety and creativity on display was incredibly impressive. Students showcased not only their practical skills but also their ability to think like real-world food developers.

We are so proud of the effort, creativity, and teamwork our Year 10s demonstrated throughout this task. There’s no doubt we have some future food industry stars among us!

Year 11 Hospitality – Getting Creative in the Kitchen!

Our Year 11 Hospitality students rolled up their sleeves and made focaccia from scratch this week. They then had the opportunity to decorate their bread, turning it into delicious pieces of art!

We saw hearts made from capsicum, flower gardens crafted using onions, tomatoes, chives, and a variety of other creative toppings. Each student brought their own flair and imagination to the task.

The results were not only tasty but visually stunning – a true showcase of creativity and effort. Students worked incredibly hard, and this proud teacher couldn’t be happier!

Year 9 Food Technology News

As we approach the end of term, assessment time is well underway, including practical tasks across various subjects. In Year 9 Food Technology, students from class 9FTE3 recently completed their first practical assessment for the topic Food Selection & Health.

Working in groups, students were tasked with planning, preparing, and justifying a dinner meal that meets the nutritional needs of teenagers. With great enthusiasm and energy, the kitchen was alive with the sounds and smells of pans sizzling, sauces simmering, and meals coming together. The students produced an impressive range of dishes—well done to the whole class!

Pictured below are the students proudly presenting their final creations.

Much excitement and valued Learning happening in the J Block

Big Picture News

Environment Park Excursion

Big Picture students observed the ephemeral wetlands (temporary wetlands) at Randwick Environment Park, home to many endangered native plants. Seven students expressed strong interest in wanting to help maintain the park. They are poised to volunteer through the Bushcare program managed by Randwick Council early in July.

Big Picture Outlearning Success

In Big Picture, outlearning is an essential part of the learning experience for our students. We aim for all our Big Picture students to be out of school two days a week to participate in learning on job sites, at universities or volunteering at various places in the community.

Jackson in Year 10 has been one of many outstanding students in gaining outlearning experiences. He works with marine diesel engines and is completing his SBAT. Jackson has been working in a wide range of locations, from Bermagui, to Cammeray, Balmain and Pittwater. He has really enjoyed working on the ferries, and on a few yachts like Wild Oats and the superyacht The Duchess.

The highlight over the last six months has been picking an engine up, moving it over and then realigning it all.

It has been a joy to watch a student learn through their passions, and to see the rewards that hard work and dedication provide.

Big Picture passion project

Trinity in Year 10 created this music magazine publication as a Big Picture passion-project…she was discovering more aspects of the music industry and ways people perceive it:

“I’ve seen several old music magazines that people had when R&B and Hip Hop were very influential to the younger generations, and I want my music to bring back the edge and style that those magazines had back then. I want this publication to grow into a place where smaller artists can promote their releases. People can look back at the classics that were made back in the 90s and read about those talented musicians as well as current artists. This will be a music magazine made from the musician’s perspective, music through the artist's eyes.” Trinity states.

English News

This term, Year 8 students in Ms Nicholas’s English class explored visual storytelling through a creative cartoon strip task. Using the prompt “He crossed his arms and shook his head,” students were challenged to transform a simple action into a short comic, capturing a moment of conflict, humour or reflection within a classroom setting. Each cartoon was accompanied by a written description, encouraging students to reflect on the context and meaning behind their scene. The results were thoughtful, funny and highly original — a testament to the creativity happening every day at South Sydney High School.

Below comic is from Cruz in Year 8.

International Visit from Vietnam

South Sydney HS has hosted 39 students from two schools in Vietnam over the last three days. It has been a wonderful experience for our students, highlighting their joy in helping others and making friends with all who come to our school. All students who have participated in this year’s program are to be commended for making our visitors feel so welcome and included in the South Sydney Family. Visits such as this are so important in building bridges across the globe and expanding the horizons for our students.

This is the second year we have hosted students from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city. Our students have looked forward to the visit all term and have been eager to participate in the program in any way they can. We anticipate another school visit next year, and look forward to having more student volunteers work with our visitors.

It’s important to know that you’re not alone on your journey, wherever it may take you. It’s equally important to learn about the experiences of those with different identities from our own.
