Why Use AI for Image Creation?

  • Customized visuals
  • Speed
  • Tradeoffs (e.g., energy consumption, bias in training data)

Using Microsoft Copilot (DALL-E 3) to Create Images

• Access MS Copilot - Note: If you sign in to MS Copilot using your campus credentials (CSUF email and password), then you will be able to use them in a protected manner (your data won't be used to train the model).

Prompting Tips to Create Images

  • Be Specific: Clearly describe the subject, setting, and style. The more detailed your description, the better the AI can understand and generate the image. Example: “A serene beach at sunset with palm trees and gentle waves.” Note: Intentional Prompting - Consider adding details about race, gender, and body type, etc., to guide the AI toward equitable representation. Multiple iterations of prompting and trying out different words may be needed to get what you want and are satisfied using. While AI isn’t perfect, thoughtful prompting helps mitigate bias.
  • Use Style Words: Incorporate words that describe the style or mood of the image, and adjectives that define the artistic style. Common styles: “realistic,” “abstract,” “watercolor,” “vintage,” “futuristic.” Example: “A futuristic cityscape with neon lights and flying cars.”
  • Include Details: Add specific elements to enrich the image. Mention elements like colors, lighting, and perspective. Example: “A cozy reading nook with a cat, bookshelves, and a large window.” Example: “A minimalist black and white sketch of a city skyline at night.”
  • Be Aware of Spelling Errors Limitation: It generally doesn’t spell well (this is improving, but I still generally avoid creating images with texts/words – I add those on later using another tool) – you can use a prompt like this “Create this image without any text or words” in your instructions if it is generating text or words on your image and you don't want it to do that.

Using Adobe Express to Create Images

Accessibility Considerations

  • Alt text provides a description of what’s in the image so that all (including visually impaired) users can understand its content.
  • To generate alt text quickly and accurately, use the Image Accessibility Creator Tool. Be sure to always use your human expertise to ensure accuracy.
  • Mark an image as decorative when it serves purely for visual enhancement or style and doesn't convey any essential information or functionality, allowing screen readers to skip it.

Summary

  • Use Copilot for quick creation.
  • Turn to Adobe Express when quality and ethical sourcing matter most.
  • Always add alt text for accessibility.
  • And be mindful of copyright concerns and environmental impact.
