WEEK 2, TERM 4, 24 OCTOBER 2025

acknowledgement of country

We recognise the Dharrug and Kuringai people, the owners and custodians of the lands and waterways where we work and live. We pay respect to Elders past and present as ongoing teachers of knowledge, songlines and stories. We strive to ensure every Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander learner in NSW achieves their potential through education.

pRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Welcome back to Term 4. Our HSC students have been in very good spirits since last Thursday with the commencement of the HSC written exams. We wish them all the best over the coming weeks.

We hosted the Education Minister's Student Advisory Committee on Wednesday with students from 25 local schools attending. Our representatives were Abi Kim (Head of SRC) and Ziqi Zhang (Deputy Head of SRC) who provided advice to the group and the Relieving Director of Education Mr Dane Ropa. A priority of the DoE is to promote student voice in school decision making and all the student representatives had the opportunity to be heard. Well done Abi and Ziqi. A follow-up meeting will be held at Hornsby Girls on Thursday December 4.

Our next P and C Meeting will be the Annual General Meeting (AGM) to be held on Wednesday 19 November at the school from 7:30pm. At this meeting a new P and C President will be elected. The school will also submit its financial requests with the P and C. Thank you again to Mrs Radhika Prasanna for her outstanding leadership of the P and C over the last three years. Mrs Prasanna steps down from the role after three years of service to the school community. Thank you to all parents who continue to support the P and C with their financial contributions or the giving of their time, energy and skills. Without this generous support from parents the school could not run its innovative programs which result in the outstanding student outcomes in the creative, leadership and relationship building, academic, and physcial domains.

Thank you to the Old Girls Union for organising the refurbishment of the original school chairs outside the Principal's Office. The vinyl covers have been replaced with soft leather with extra cushioning. This refurbishment will last for another 95 years. A special thank you to Mrs Burke for her work on this project.

Please see the article on the achievements of Mrs Pam Carey (HGHS Class of 1935) below who died last week. We will be attending her funeral on Monday. Mrs Carey would have turned 105 in November! An incredible achievement. Students loved seeing Mrs Carey in the school particularly to celebrate her birthdays and to enjoy a celebratory ice block. Vale Pam Carey.

Congratulations to our conductor Ms Jenny Ridgway (CAPA Faculty) who has been chosen by the DoE to be the Assistant Conductor for Schools Spectacular 2025. Mr Steve Williams the Chief Conductor for Schools Spectacular chose Ms Ridgway for her outstanding musical and interpersonal skills which will hold her in good stead in her new additional role. This is a great honour for Ms Ridgway and we wish her all the best for the concerts in late November.

Congratulations to our new House Leaders who were elected by the students to represent their interests in Sport, Music and Leadership. They were presented with their badges on Wednesday's Assembly. Thank you Mrs Jane Hall (PDHPE and House Coordinator) for organising the ceremony. Please see the article below.

Congratulations to all students who received awards on Wednesday's Assembly for their participation in National Mathematics and Science competitions. The assembly was a celebration of our remarkable students who continue to achieve at the highest level. Well done students! Please see the article belwow

Kind regards,

Justin Briggs (Principal)

Deputy Principals' Message

Welcome back to all students and families. Hopefully everyone was able to enjoy some rest and fun over the last few weeks. Once again it was enjoyable to hear happy students enjoying talking with their peers and teachers across the school.

Year 12 - On Thursday 16 October our 2025 HSC cohort commenced their HSC examinations with English Advanced Paper 1. Our students arrived with punctuality and with a positive mindset for both Advanced English papers. Well done Year 12!

Students will be able to officially sign out of school on the following dates:

  • Thursday 6 November
  • Friday 7 November
  • Thursday 13 November

Year 12 should commence by dropping their English texts in the library before dropping other texts and resources back to faculties. Each student has been emailed an individualised sheet which they will need to print and have signed by their teachers. This can be done in the library.

To assist with the process if parents and caregivers could check their accounts for outstanding payments this would be much appreciated.

Information regarding photographs from the Graduation Dinner has also been emailed to parents and caregivers. Students have been able to access this information to order photographs through their grade Google Classroom.

Year 11 - This term, Year 11 students officially started their HSC courses and over the last few weeks have been finalising the subjects that they wish to continue studying for the HSC.

Last Friday they commenced their Senior Privileges and there was a buzz along our front corridor as the year group proceeded to participate in an important senior milestone, going to Westfield for lunch for the first time. These privileges also allow Year 11 students to arrive late and leave school early on days that they do not have timetabled classes during period 1 or 4.

If students have a study period during the day, they have the opportunity to go to the library, the senior cottage, the COLA or an available classroom in A Block. They cannot leave school during periods 2 and 3. They must arrive at school no later than 10 am and be present for any school assemblies.

Year 11 Semester Two Reports will be available online from 31 October. We congratulate all our students on their efforts and achievements over the last three terms.

In the last week of this term, Wednesday December 17, Year 11 will participate in the ‘Urban Challenge’. This excursion provides challenge and helps build team work and collaboration for our HSC students. Information will be provided in the coming weeks to Year 11 in preparation for this. Thank you to Mrs Tourikis for organising this opportunity for our students.

Year 9 - Year 9 Yearly Examinations will start on the 17 November and finish on 21 November. Parents will be emailed a letter explaining arrangements and a copy of the examination timetable soon. Students are expected to be at school every day. When a student does not have examinations they are provided with supervision in the hall while they engage in private study.

Please remind your child that it is normal to feel nervous prior to examinations and to put the importance of these examinations into perspective. These assessments are simply a snapshot of their skills at this point in time and give them an indication of areas to work on in 2026.

Year 10 - Year 10 will complete their Yearly Examinations in Week 4 of this term. Ms Gilmore will post details in the Grade Google Classroom and email parents regarding arrangements. In the Yearly Assessment Block students only need to attend when they have an examination and can study from home at other times. The library is always available for study as well during the Assessment Block.

On Friday 14 November all Year 10 will complete NESA’s Minimum Standards Tests in Numeracy, Reading and Writing. More information regarding the tests is found here:

HSC Minimum Standard

No study is required for these tests as they are very accessible for our High Potential and Gifted Students. Students will need to bring a charged laptop on the day. If a student is absent on the day we will organise a reschedule.

In week 7 and 8 of this term year 10 will be involved in Life and Resilience week and Illuminate challenge. Further details will be communicated to families soon.

Year 7, 8 and 9 - On 28 November Year 7, 8 and 9 will be attending the School Spectacular Matinee Performance at Qudos Bank Arena to support the students that we have participating in the show. Further information will be sent to parents in the coming weeks.

Year 8 - This week Year 8 were informed of the outcome of the subject selection process and which electives they will be studying in Year 9 2026. Any students that have concerns are encouraged to speak with Ms Gilmore or Mr Li. Overall, Year 8 seemed very happy with the outcome and we thank Mr Li for his work on this.

Travelling to and from school - Our students usually demonstrate excellent conduct when travelling on public transport. From time to time a Prefect, Travel Prefect or Senior Student may speak with our students to ensure they are safe or to remind them of the school’s expectations. Students have recently been reminded in the Daily Notices of the need to follow reasonable instructions from our school leaders. Please take the time to remind your child of this protocol.

Social Media Ban - The Australian Government’s ‘Social Media Ban’ for under 16s commences on 10 December 2025. Many parents and caregivers have questions about the operation of the laws and what they can do to support their children. The eSafety Commisioner website provides answers and advice to parents regarding the implementation here: Social Media Ban

Children’s Online Privacy Code - Earlier this year, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC), the Australian Government’s privacy regulator, invited children and young people in Years 3 to 12 to share their views about online privacy. The OAIC received over 235 responses from children and young people. In recognition of one of the key components of a genuine consultation process, the OAIC has published, specifically for children and young people, a Children’s consultation report. This report provides a snapshot summary of the important views shared by children and young people, allowing children and young people to engage with their own views being echoed back to them, and to also gain insight into the views shared by others in their own age cohort. As part of your ongoing support of the OAIC’s development of the Children’s Online Privacy Code, please take a few minutes to read this report and share it with the young people in your life. The Children’s consultation report can be found here; Childrens Online Privacy

Whole School Assembly - On Wednesday 22 October we held a whole school assembly. This was a wonderful celebration of student success across a range of activities. Our newly elected House Leaders were presented with their badges by our outgoing House Leaders and students were recognised for their success in the Australian Mathematics and Science Competitions and Zone Debating. Many students also achieved Minerva awards. We also announced the new CCMP leaders for 2026. Thank you to our 2025- 2026 Prefects for their excellent running of their first assembly in their newly elected roles.

Chemistry Stars Shine! - A number of our students took part in the RACI International Chemistry Quiz, competing against thousands of students across Australia and overseas. The quiz tested their chemistry knowledge, critical thinking and curiosity about how the world works. Congratulations to our prize winners for their fantastic results and dedication to science!

We are very proud of their commitment and enthusiasm for science. Participating in the Olympiads is a remarkable achievement that reflects deep understanding, curiosity and persistence.

Lost Property - The office has placed a large volume of lost property in the front corridor for students to collect. We have PE jackets, jumpers, school shoes, sports shoes, lunchboxes, glasses, hats, watches and more! Many of this is in good condition and some of the school shoes appear to be very new. If your child is missing items please ask them to check the table for them.

The office also keeps valuable items such as airpods, jewellery, chargers and phones behind the counter. If you child has reported that they are missing these sorts of items please ask they to check in the Bank Office.

Any items that are not collected over the next few weeks will either be donated to the Clothing Pool or charity.

It is also a good reminder that when returning in 2026 all items need to be labelled.

HOUSE LEADERS

During a recent full school assembly, students and staff gathered to acknowledge and express their gratitude to the outgoing 2025 House Leaders. Their exemplary leadership throughout the year has contributed significantly to the success of key school events, including carnivals, House meetings, and House Choir. Each of these occasions required thoughtful planning, effective teamwork, and genuine dedication — qualities consistently demonstrated by our 2025 leaders.

Students from Year 10 who nominated themselves for 2026 House Leadership were also recognised for their initiative, enthusiasm, and commitment to the school community. Their willingness to embrace leadership opportunities is to be commended.

Congratulations to our newly elected 2026 House Leaders, who were proudly presented with their badges during the assembly. We look forward to witnessing their growth as leaders and the positive contributions they will make to their Houses and the wider school community in the year ahead.

PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB

Are you interested in being a school photographer or learning how to take photos that are not on the automatic setting? We now have a Photography Club here at HGHS!

Jiya Shah and Amitya Palsani who are our current school photographers have established and been running the club since Term 3 with the aim of teaching students how to effectively take photos and establish a larger group of school event photographers! They have been planning fun activities and practical lessons and supporting students across all grades who are interested.

A huge thank you goes out to Jiya and Amitya for organising this!

Knit for Hamlin

We have had such a wonderful contribution for our Knit for Hamlin project from students, staff and the Old Girls Union. We would like to do a particular shout out to Mrs Pike in the SASS team who has made nearly two blankets worth of squares on her own already. It is wonderful to be receiving knitted squares from all over the country from members of our Old Girls Union. Thank you all for your support of this special project.

The project will continue until the end of this term. We’re excited to share photos of the lovely squares that have been sewn into blankets. For now, please keep knitting those squares!

Full details of the project can be found here: Knit for Hamlin

Thank you

Vale Pam Carey

Joan Burke from the Old Girls Union and Julie Griffin OAM from the Hornsby Soroptimist Society contacted the school to let us know of the sad death of Pam Carey (who attended Hornsby Girls leaving circa 1935), who passed away at her Care Facility in Woy Woy on Friday.

The students and staff have been singing 'Happy Birthday' to Mrs Carey since her 99th birthday in 2019 and even sang to her during COVID when she stayed in a car due to social distancing requirements so that students could celebrate her 100th birthday.

Mrs Burke visited Mrs Carey just last week and chatted to her and she was even able to attempt some knitting with her.

She was in remarkable health and was actively engaged with all who visited her.

She would have turned 105 in November and had been living independently in her unit in Hornsby up until March 2025!

Last year Mrs Carey told me with a cheeky smile on her face that her goal was to reach 105 as her mother had lived to 104!

Mrs Carey attended a number of Speech Days at the Sydney Town Hall well into her late 90s and would be onstage happily presenting awards to the students.

Students and staff recently signed a congratulatory card for her acknowledging that she had moved into care and we also sent her a copy of the Hornsby Girls 95th Anniversary Photograph at that time.

It is amazing to think that she still cared about the school after all this time.

What a great example of service she was for all who came in contact with her.

YEAR 8T & 8X GEOGRAPHY EXCURSION

On Tuesday, 21 October, Year 8 Geography classes 8X and 8T set off on an exciting excursion to Sydney’s vibrant Chinatown. Travelling by train, students enjoyed perfect weather as they explored the colourful streets, rich cultural heritage, and global connections that make this area such a dynamic part of the city.

The excursion went beyond simply observing the sights—students became active geographers, investigating how Chinatown links Sydney to the wider world. Through engaging fieldwork and interactive mapping activities, they examined how people, goods, and ideas move across the globe to shape local places like Chinatown into thriving global hubs.

The day provided plenty of opportunities for teamwork, critical thinking, and inquiry-based learning, perfectly aligning with the Geography syllabus. Students had a fantastic time experiencing how classroom concepts come to life in the real world, deepening their understanding of global interconnections while enjoying a fun and memorable day out in Sydney.

Here's what students had to say:

"I really enjoy hands on activities and walking through Chinatown was really enjoyable"

"I enjoyed this as I could see the stores and the cultural architecture."

"I enjoyed this the most because it introduced me to a new place that I have never been to before, and it was interesting to see all of the shops."

A big thankyou to Ranger Jamie tours for leading us!

Maths Challenge 2025

The Maths Challenge is a problem-solving activity organised by the Australian Maths Trust (AMT), which is aimed at stimulating the mathematically interested students in their year level.

The Maths Challenge takes place over three to four consecutive weeks. Students receive a problem book containing six problems and are required to present written solutions to as many of these problems as they can. The problems are challenging and require time and persistence, but are based on maths that should be known at that level for students in the Junior (Year 7-8) and Intermediate (Year 9-10) levels.

This program takes dedication as well as mathematical ability and is ideal for students who want to extend their mathematical knowledge and understanding. The Maths Challenge is designed to be an enjoyable and valuable learning experience for students.
