Growing Together: Mt. Vernon Schools are Expanding While Keeping Class Sizes Small
Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation is growing again! This year, our enrollment has increased by 162 students, bringing our K-12 total to 4,822. But even as we grow, we’re making sure students continue to get the attention they deserve by keeping our class sizes small and adding teachers to maintain a student-to-teacher ratio of 1:15.
Right now, our average class sizes are:
- Elementary: Average 22.4 students per class
- Middle School 24.5 students per class
- High School: 25 students per class
Exciting Changes Ahead: The Return of Mt. Vernon Intermediate School
To keep up with our expanding student population, we’re making a big move in the fall of 2025—bringing back our Intermediate School! This will give our fifth and sixth graders their own dedicated space, which helps in two major ways:
- Creates more room in our three elementary schools and middle school
- Makes space for future growth while keeping our class sizes manageable
We know that smaller class sizes, great teachers, and enough space to learn and grow make a big difference for students. That’s why we’re committed to planning ahead, investing in our schools, and keeping students at the center of everything we do.
Mt. Vernon is a great place to learn, and we’re excited to keep growing—together! #WeRMV

Read Across America: Indiana’s Secretary of Education Reads to McCordsville Classroom
Indiana’s Secretary of Education, Dr. Katie Jenner, kicked off Read Across America Week on Monday morning with a visit to Ms. Shona Kelly's first-grade classroom in McCordsville. Dr. Jenner brought her personal copy of "Ada Twist, Scientist," a 2016 book that features a curious little girl who loves to ask questions and explore the world around her. Despite her packed schedule, Dr. Jenner shared that reading to the students in McCordsville will be the highlight of her week.
Principal Stephanie Miller praised the visit as a valuable opportunity for the students to interact with such a high-ranking official and learn about the importance of reading. She also commended the school’s efforts to make Read Across America Week both fun and engaging, with different themes each day. “Many of them have participated in this event for years,” she said, pointing out that Ms. Kelly is a longtime advocate for literacy in her first-grade classroom, which features a wall of shelves lined with turquoise green bins of books. Miller said it’s teachers like her who made it possible for half of the school’s second-graders to pass the IREAD-3 test early last year, referring to the state standardized assessment given to third-graders to measure foundational reading skills.
One of Ms. Kelly’s students, Asher Braun, was all smiles after Jenner’s visit. The first-grader said he loves reading at both home and school, as well as when his parents read to him at bedtime. His favorite book right now is “The Last Firehawk,” an animal-based fantasy adventure, “I like to read nonfiction because I learn a lot,” he said. “I think reading really helps me learn more and lets my imagination come alive.”
Dr. Jenner stated, “We know the incredible value of making sure all of our students can read, and we have teachers and schools all over our state who are working as hard as possible to help get kids there. Today’s the day to celebrate reading and what is happening in our schools!”
Out-of-District/Transfer Application Window for Next Year: 4/18-5/19
Families looking for a top-tier education in a thriving, innovative school district now have the opportunity to apply for out-of-district enrollment at Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation for the 2025-2026 school year. With growing enrollment and expanded facilities, including reopening the Mt. Vernon Intermediate School opening this fall and a brand-new Fortville Elementary School on the horizon, MVCSC is excited to welcome new students into its dynamic learning environment.
All students who live out-of-district and are interested in attending or are currently attending a Mt. Vernon school are required to submit an application during the application window to attend a Mt. Vernon school in 2025-2026. If you live in any MVCSC enrollment area, you do NOT need to complete this application.
For families that are new to Mt. Vernon and do not have any students currently enrolled, the Mini-Marauder Preschool is the only building that will be closed to new families. With the transition of fifth grade (from the elementary schools) and sixth grade (from the middle school) moving to the intermediate school, additional capacity has been created in our K-8 buildings.
Apply and be a part of the incredible Mt. Vernon community! #WeRMV

Congrats to the MV Building Winners for Teacher & Staff of the Year
Congratulations to these outstanding building winners for Teacher of the Year (TOY) and the Staff of the Year (SOY)! The process began with staff members nominating up to three individuals for both TOY and SOY in their respective buildings. After the top three nominees with the most votes were announced, staff members evaluate them based on criteria such as dedication, teamwork, caring, student focus, commitment to lifelong learning, and innovation. Please help congratulate the building winners who have exemplified the previously listed qualities.
Each building TOY and SOY winner receives two tickets to the Mt. Vernon Education Foundation's (MVEF) Black & Gold Gala on April 12, along with a custom engraved glass sculpture and a $500 cash award sponsored by the Ryan Fry Excellence in Education Fund. This MVEF fund was established by Kevin and Jill Prefontaine in 2018 in memory of Jill’s brother, Ryan Fry. Since its inception, the Ryan Fry Excellence in Education Fund has provided over $80,000 in support to educators and staff as they create meaningful experiences.
Please celebrate their outstanding contributions to our schools by attending the MVEF "Million Dreams Under The Big Top" Gala on April 12. The building winners will be formally honored at the event, along with the official announcement of the District's Teacher and Staff of the Year, selected by a MVEF committee.
